In response to a few comments-- Rick Moranis's wife did die, in 1991, and this movie came out in 1996 and he retired in 1997. He didn't immediately retire due to her death, I think he just found travelling exhausting as a single father. Being in crappy movies like this with no return to show for it probably didn't help.

@@scottylewis8124 i think he would've done well, but depends on an actor's headspace and how far they get involved with method acting. Some who are capable of drama can find it mentally and emotionally tolling on their health and well-being. Given Ric's life at the time, doing drama would've probably made him channel into some negative thoughts that would worsen any existing depression or grief he was feeling (or maybe not; it's different for every person grieving the loss of a spouse)

Somehow this movie is less mean spirited than the Christian musical Hi Tops which the proshot literally has the audience laughing hysterically at the nerd and the Angel turned into a nerd and how awkward they are. It’s pretty bad. Also Cool Cat Vs Dirty Dog Unleashed’s premise is extremely mean spirited as Cool Cat is literally using a weaponized jet to fight Dirty Dog which makes the fight incredibly unfair because Dirty Dog gets absolutely nothing to fight back with which ironically makes Cool Cat the bully.

Maybe I'm just broken by watching so many bad movie reviews, but I really feel like this is one of those bad movies that has a truly great idea behind it. This was that era where "studio interference" was at an all-time high, but it was also completely incomprehensible and often contradictory, so you'd get a script for something like a weird horror genre subversion (the bully snaps as an adult seeing Moranis' character's seeming success because it turns out Moranis WAS bullying him through snark/mockery, but all the adults believed big kid=bully every time) and some dipshit executive would go "Eh, I don't get it/it won't play in the Flyovers" and suddenly: it's a "kids' movie." This is a one of the few times I'd 100% believe the director if he came out and said "it was intended as a parody/satire." Stuff like the Don Knotts joke not smashing you over the head with the punchline, everyone just blaming crack because it was the mid-90s, EVERYTHING with Jeffery Tambor, and the entire 3rd act really nod toward a better, subtler, weirder movie that never was.
Also marketing this as a "kid's movie" is so...incredibly '90s. "Yeah, there's a weird amount of sexual themes and violence, but barely any swearing and actors mostly known for kids' movies, so it MUST be a kids' movie! There's a child actor right there, how could it NOT be???"

This is also why I think if you want to make movies or any other kind of art you probably SHOULD watch bad movies/play bad games/read bad books etc. Everyone usually points to it being a good way to see what not to do but I feel like there is even more one can gain from experiencing bad art. Bad art can have good ideas that could totally inspire you to make something great. I have also seen one person (i do not remember who) say that playing bad games as a game dev can be helpful because often times really creative solutions to problems can be found in crappy games (probably because they were made by thinking outside of the box/without knowledge of standard design rules for both good and bad).

I know part of why Moranis retired is because of his wife dying and him wanting to care for his kids in her absence. The Stupids I didn’t think was that bad as the family did live up to their names and were pretty accurate portrayals to how they were in the books.

    • @Slashboss
      @Slashboss Před měsícem

Stupids not so much, Carpool? Oh yes. Arnold worked way better with David Paymer and the kids than Rick and the kids in this, and it had a way better director in Arthur Hiller. It was cheesy and more for kids but it had a bigger heart than this one and is a blast to watch. If Arnold had done just this one and Carpool I don't see his 96 being so disastrous. The Stupids really made him look bad and put his leading man run on a permanent end.

I remember this movie well, and I think you guys are off on the assessment overall, the movie builds up or progresses into the change in tone and the stages in the plot carry it to the nutty climax. I also think it has pretty typical pacing for the family friendlyish comedy movies of the time.
If it were a bit quirkier and more awkward in the delivery I believe it would have a cult following, but as it stands I think it portrayed what it intended, it just happens to be a B movie premise with an A budget.

The reason for Rick Moranis stepping down from acting and just doing voice acting, was because of his wife passing away...
Sure, "Big Bully" bombing at the box office kinda did him no favors, but it certainly wasn't Moranis' fault.

I'll just say: maybe watch the video before commenting on the title? Titles for CZcams videos need to be eye-catching so people click on them, they don't always have to be 100% accurate. This is essentially a simplification/urban legend: his wife had passed 6 years prior to this movie even coming out.

Something must have happened in the production of this movie, but I can't find anything. Miner was never great, but he had been a solid hand on films like "Forever Young" and "Wild Hearts can't be broken". He mostly did TV the rest of his career, but he was mainstream.
In the abstract, it looks like any of a number of bad mid 90's comedies, like "Getting Even With Dad" or "Jingle All the Way" or "Mr. Magoo". But with those films I at least get the bad idea they had. What story did they really want to tell with Big Bully? I suspect the original relationship then and in the future changed frequently as they were shooting so when they were done it was a swiss cheese.

Please stick with me guys, this Big Bully story lands:
This movie has been a quote monster in my house since I saw it in the theater, which is all insanity on its face.
    ("WhaDDAsammmHELLLLL?")
    ("But you can call me...Ross.")
    ("Daaaaaaaveyyyyyy...")
    ("Greeeeen Eggs and Haaaammm...")
    ("It becomes...hot dish...")
    ("What? More PEASSSS?")
Even crazier, as a child I started collecting theater posters, and the dumb, plain white one-sheet of Fang hugging Davey was one of them...and I still have it. Up. I'm 40 in two weeks.
Crazier still, as soon as eBay was officially a thing, I bought the Knievel toy set, x2, boxed/loose. I still have them.
Not-so-crazy side note: I purchased the Duke Kaboom! toy set for my kid after Toy Story 4 came out; it emulates the Knievel set from the film...and she loves it like Davey did. Our favorite book, for a time, Green Eggs and Ham...my stolen copy (though from a church(?!), not a library).
The book isn't a moon rock...but nobody's looking for it/me, so I'm in no danger.
Small world side note: I met the screenwriter, Mark Steven Johnson, shortly after he directed Daredevil/Ghost Rider, at a comic convention when he was the original choice ti helm the Preacher film adaptation from DC, which never materialized. Everyone asked Ghost Rider and Preacher questions. Not me. Told him I loved the film and why...and he was flabbergasted that anyone had seen it, let alone enjoyed it.😂
Grand finale: I'm a writer who moved back to his hometown in June...
You guys, it just hit me: I might be this movie's biggest fan...
