    Some extra facts about the Old Ones:
    * They were a race of toadmen who could fling shit at things that annoyed them with their minds. So basically, what all old people wish they could do.
    * Most of their technology consisted of highly advanced rocking chairs.
    * The reason why they forgot to install an off switch on the Orks was because that was supposed to be Harold's job, except he had Alzheimer's. The rest forgot that Harold had Alzheimer's because they, too, also had Alzheimer's.

    the best source of data about the old ones is from pre 40k rogue trader WHFB. I was at school then (I'm 41 now!) but they were a lot more fleshed out. Incidentally Fact 36: The old ones almost certainly made the cadian gate pylons:
    Let me replay some of what I remember: nb this is all from memory. But I had a mate who was a massive fan of WHFB and he talked a LOT about the old ones back about 1993 ish.
    Zoats, Jokero, Eldar, Humans, Orks, Gretchin and Snotlings were all made by Old Ones. And they were the Slann. The words were interchangeable. Lizard men are not relevant. The word Krork is also new. These elements were from a much later fold in. Same with Necrons and C'tan. They are red herrings: Ignore those, the original WHFB writers had no intention of bringing them in, these last few are merely retcons based on inclinations and leanings and biases made by a later generation of writers.
    This is much closer to the source material: all the following races were made by the slann, and pretty much all the habitable planets were too, some people even conjectured they made the warp. Eldar were servants, created to do a sort of posh domestic role (more gardeners and artists helping form new worlds), Zoat another (rugged travelers, unwaveringly loyal, able to work alone, ambassadorial), Jokero another etc etc Orks were the warrior creation. These species did NOT interact. They all had their own planets. They were separate:
    Orkoids: of the Orkoids they are meant to be massively reproducing warriors able to work with no support whatsoever, Snotlings were the highest IQ variant of these and were the rulers of the Ork/Gretchin societies - and make no bones about it they had a proper society back then with the brain boys making all the advances- Orks are the lowest IQ "do-ers" gretchin in the middle as "assistance". the idea was a special symbiotic fungus was consumed by the Orkoids to make Snotling clever, but this fungus was less important in Gretchin and of no importance with Orks - except that it made them follow the snotlings. After Slann disappeared Snotlings (Brain boys)lost this special fungus and have degenerated. But the fact Orks (who are the stupidest) took over, and can still get into space and make tanks work (cos of the belief in it working) and they have weird boys and mek boys who require no schooling is testament to their ability to function as a rudimentary space faring race with no real support even from snotlings. i.e ORks as we know them now are in a sort of "boot up" BIOS mode when the primary operating system us missing - an artifact of a race able to function but no longer doing much other than basic stuff.
    Eldar: Eldar were sort of the most inter-collaborative of their creations, they were made to be "on their level" and be like companions (not quite as capable as a Slann but not far off), hence they are very arty and highly strung.
    Humans were a late addition: possibly because the warp went bad. There were some issues with Eldar (possibly reproductive) issues too.
    Jokero are VERY like Orks they were meant to make complex technology out of scrap. Pay a lot of attention to Jokero, the old Rogue Trader rules overlap with a lot of the Ork stuff. Jokero made the digital weapons and made defense lasers out of las pistols.
    Pretty sure Slann created the dimension of the warp, and hooked it into most of their creations. They after they tinkered too hard with the immaterium, and decided they had to leave the Galaxy (to another dimension or *more likely* time traveled to the future) when the warp went wrong and started spouting chaos in the form of deamons etc. Basically the warp coming "online" the way it did was partly why they went away (so their servants could fix the mess). But the Slann were already in a decay by then.
    It seems therefore that *ALL* the lesser races made by the Slann had two things in common: they were not the same biology as the cold blooded Slann, nor the same biology of each other and they were all (in their own way) capable of full autonomy.

    As a huge fan of HP Lovecraft and having read all of his stories, I can say with some authority that, while a lot of Warhammer 40K is based on Lovecraft, The Old Ones in HP Lovecraft are not distinctly NOT The Old Ones from Warhammer 40K. They look completely different, they behave completely differently. The HP Lovecraft Old Ones are evil or at least indifferent, while the Old Ones in 40K are distinctly protagonistic.

    • @diamondmetal3062
      @diamondmetal3062 Před 8 lety +4

      As an equally huge fan of Lovecraft, I personally think that WH40k Old Ones seem to be more akin to the Great Race of Yith: unimaginably intelligent, possessing vast psychic powers, being one of the nicer (for a given definition of nice) races in the lore, all the while being mundane themselves (Yithians were just some other alien species as opposed to a Great Old One, while the Old Ones were still beings of the Materium, despite their complete mastery of the Warp)

    • @Wildboy789789
      @Wildboy789789 Před 8 lety +2

      old ones in warhammer fantasy are literally the heros... they brought primitive races to the warhammer planet and kept their constant warfare in a balance, to preserve the races from the dangers of space

      The Greater Ark that's true, but still, it was a warp gate used for them which became corrupted... since I luv writing lore, I like to think logically, they left or were wiped out because all their gates were corrupted, probably had spawns pop up on their ships

  • @MenosDiamond
    @MenosDiamond Před 8 lety +3

    Starting, I have not read any lore of 30k so everything I will say is from the 40k lore. The slann was the first race that the old ones created. The Old ones made the webway because the couldn't use the warp that's why as you said they created races as eldar that they could harness the warp as a weapon against the ctan. They brought enslavers and other warp creatures into being and some of them gained so much power that they became god like beings(the gods of chaos as we know them). Generally you are right at most facts but in the 40k lore the old ones are not lizards. It's true that the lore has many holes so you can find some differences from edition to edition. There are many known eldars that have fought side by side with the Old ones and I think that Eldrad is one of them if we could find his age by the lore. The enslavers broke the old ones into pieces, the Umbras but there is no further search into this, even by gw. There are 3 old ones still in the universe. Khaine broken into pieces (something like ctan shards) by Slanesh, that are still in use as the Avatar of Khaine, by the eldar, Isha enslaved by Nurgle and the Laughing God, Gegorach hiding in the webway.

    I have a theory about the fate of the Old Ones.We all know that the GW boys like their ancient Egypt based myths. Part of old Egypt belief was that the soul was made of parts. You could say that a number of Old Ones were horrified by the War of Heaven and what happened to the Warp.
    So they planned an escape. Beings of great spiritual power with love of life and technology.
    I think they split themselves each into five parts, and became the Tau.

    Hey there, great channel, I would like to see more videos about imperium! So here is theory I got about old ones, and it is supported by your #3 fact, that old ones were group of different races, and here it goes:
    I believe that every sentient race from 40k lore had it ¨shepherd¨ or ¨shepherds¨ who helped that race evolve and advance! Reason why old ones ¨lost¨ war in havens is probably because they turned against each other, and that claim is supported by this list of ¨supposed¨ ancient ones we still ¨have¨ in 40k lore: Emperor of mankind is Ancient One for humans (we know that, how he came to be is unknown, but there are two or three popular theories, so its more possible that he IS Ancient One, and we also know that emperor had ¨similar¨ goals as ancient ones, he started building warp gates for safe warp travel - which later crumbled down on imperium head, and his dying body was sat on golden throne to keep warp entities out - whoah I got off theme lol) Ethereals for Tau, Hive Mind for Tyranids, Brain Boyz for orcs, etc...
    Subscribed to ur channel! btw, what do u think of my theory?

    Could the old one have split themselves in four to create the Skinks, Saurus, Kroxigor and Slann? This would be why the Lizard-Man would have so many races working together as they would have come from the same Genome and same ancestry race. This would work as no one knows what the old ones look like and would give an idea on how powerful they would have been/ are (if they are still alive that is). As combining all the Traits of the different Lizard-Man species strait away wouldn't give us the exact appearance but rather an image of combining there strongest Traits each Species Showing in one lifeform. (Image a Kroxigor the size, intelligence and power of a Slann, with the ingenuity of a skink and the reflexes and battle prowess of a Saurus.) Just Saying It would be interesting.

    • @Mrblob100

      Necrons are the worst thing for Tyranids to fight because there's no reason for the Necrons to not wipe out all biological life withing 100 light years of their worlds to deprive the Tyranids of bio-matter.

      That's the thing though, the Chaos goes Slaanesh was only just birthed in the 40k universe where's in fantasy he's mature so either fantasy happens after the events of 40k or the fantasy world is a planet within 40k. But then again the warp doesn't abide by our conceived idea of time and space so that could also have something to do with it.

    • @bloodydove5718
      @bloodydove5718 Před 7 lety +2

      Evolution of course is about adapting to one's environment. And theres of course things like parallel and convergent evolution; one can meet the same or similar end without having the same start. What im getting at is that whereas we on earth are carbon based organisms, and animals require oxygen for a plethora of our functions... something that evolved on another planet, in a totally different environment could be radically different in their evolutionary path and function.
      Prime example in the 40k Universe would be the C'tan. They have no need for oxygen, and came to be in one of the absolutely most hostile environments that nothing we've ever experienced would even last an instant in.
      Though there is a reason why in real life, we look for "life as we know it" (terrible concept btw), when you think about what we understand about evolution and... life as we know it.. it becomes severely limiting on the possibility of us finding life outside of earth.

HP Lovecraft "Old Ones" are horrible. . .. depending on the story you are referring to, I really only remember our existence being "dreamed" by one of the old gods, not necessarily "created" . . the rest of the Old Ones would more likely destroy everything rather than create anything.

    40k and fantasy are linked... the chaos warp destroyed the world after the 8th age of fantasy and the original warhammer planet is now the warp storm... the old ones brought primitive races to the warhammer world in fantasy, to protect them from bad guys in space, then they left and never came back only leaving a few slann preists behind with the lizardmen to keep balance on the planet and fight back the warp... the high elf island home of ulthuan, is still made of an unknown metal left by the old ones... that being said, warhammer lore has cracks in it, the 5th chaos god malal and the fimir are gone for no good reason, but as a whole the story makes sense... ive been inspired to write my own fantasy tabletop game, u can buy it in the year like uh 2030 lol, visit my channel, watch me play games, and fund my dreams :) I promise my lore will never be broken, I have not yet released any info on my lore because I don't want it stolen until I can properly fund it, but rest ashured its similar to warhammer, mixes sci-fi and fantasy, and I will never ever break my lore

      Plural is codices but its a bastardisation of Latin anyway. Codex originally meant block of Wood or collection of wooden statues but in the 16th century English it came to mean a manuscript or list of medical ingredients.

      +Rick Castle Yes, exactly. It´s a given theory by the lore but I read that probably behind the Tyranid invasion and the Hive Mind IS actually an Old One. Perpahps trying to gather all the genetic information in one just specie and fight back the Necrons I think.

    • @13Lictor
      @13Lictor Před 8 lety +2

      +OneMindSyndicate 4th edition Tyranid codex in a section exploring the mysterious nature of the Hive Mind, it was theorized by Imperial scientists and inquisitors that the Tyranid race could be a result of the Old Ones returning to the galaxy to undo everything they created, and that the Hive Mind was the last remaining Old One. Which would also make sense given the Tyranids unusual mastery over the Warp

      They old one went away and said they would return to fight again. Now come the tyranitds. As said, the old ones might be based on lovecraftian stuff, I can deffinitly see that in the tyranids.
      Allso it would explain how the tyranids can approach from all directions, they Old ones would simply had spread in all directions from the galaxy, and then direct their new creations back.

    • @andarara-c1p
      @andarara-c1p Před 8 lety

      Metholus Caedes Also, the thing that tyranids avoid Tomb Worlds (even those which are slumbering and have livings on it) would mean that Tyranids have some knowledge about what Necrons are (relating with Old Ones and their War in Heaven against Necrons and C`tan).

    HP Lovecraft - the guy who managed to strap as many penises and vaginas to as many piece of furniture or garden equipment and called it horror.
    Srsly tho, the guy had problems. Literally everything he created has something to do with genitalia, penetration or similar.

    • @paranidherc
      @paranidherc Před 7 lety

      Vincentas Saladis
      You kinda described it already tho - it's disgusting, psychologically painful and trauma inducing. That's not horror. It's thriller at best and literal gore porn at worst.
      Horror is about being scary. Being horrific, frightening, uncanncy. And most of the time he does not even decribe the creatures properly. It's like "But the human mind cannot imagine it" at the end of every fucking discription. And you just sit there and facepalm as a reader, because that is lazy ass writing.
      Besides, there is a difference between using something as a medium or a theme and having sexual organs EVERYWHERE. Like a child that learned how to draw one thing decently, got praise for it and now draws the same shit over and over again. You still praise it...kinda, but hope that it learns the meaning of the word "creativity" sooner than later.

    • @paranidherc
      @paranidherc Před 7 lety

      Vincentas Saladis
      Hipster? 1. I'm not one, i simply prefer real horror like Poe or King and 2. The definition of Hipster is not disliking the writing of a genitalia-obsessed weirdo.
      Horror is supposed to make you scared and frightened. Singing a Justin Bieber song in the middle of the street will make one uncomfortable, but not very scared, now will it?
      There is a clear difference and all Lovecraft does is putting an emphasis on rape and genitalia and things being "unimaginable" which is shitty writing and a cop-out. It's one-dimensional and cheap.

    • @paranidherc
      @paranidherc Před 7 lety

      Vincentas Saladis
      Yes, but King gets under your skin. Slowly, insidiously. Poe on the other hand is all about a process being set in motion and unfolding like a dark, blossoming flower.
      Lovecraft is...Here is an alien that looks like a penis. Here is one that looks like a vagina. With eyes. Here some more tentacles. Also it has details you can't emagine, bloogey woogey woo.
      Look up any lore on the creatures. Most information is unobtainable, unimaginable and impossible to calculate. Sorry, but it's just a more fancy way to say "[...]"

    • @bloodydove5718
      @bloodydove5718 Před 7 lety

      Sounds like you simply have a dislike for lovecraft and a different taste for horror than some other people. That doesnt mean HP Lovecraft wasnt creative, or that he didnt write good horror... just that it didnt appeal to you.

    • @paranidherc
      @paranidherc Před 7 lety

      Vincentas Saladis
      Yeah, well, but those creatures aren't very well described. IF it was anybody but HPL, you would say "Well, this guy is certainly taking the easy way out, just saying that everything interesting is unimaginable"
      Besides, you are bringing up pretty much the same arguments GoT or TWD or The Witcher 3 fans bring up. "Well, it's your attitude that prevents you from seeing how unbelievably deep and fascinating the world is" - yeah, well, its rape, murder, maiming, torture, murder, rape in no particular order or frequency. No, really, please tell me more about the originality of them. (i dare you to tell me one storyline from any of those that did not end up in / included some of the listed)
      And im not saying you aren't supposed to enjoy them, im saying that to me HPL had mental problems and put vaginas and penises everywhere - which he did - and that i do not enjoy games / books / films / tv-shows that are one-dimensional, i.e. being only about violence, betrayal and how horrible the world is. To me a good story requires contrast - good and evil, laughter and tears, beauty and ugliness. Otherwise it is simply too limited and thus commits the worst sin - being predictable.
