(almost) All 2-strike or 3-ball count pitches in Baseball Savant's 'edge of zone' officiated by umpire Pat Hoberg in 2023 MLB season. The man is automatic. Pat knows ball.
Are there any other umpires you want compilations of? Comment below! I'm working on gathering clips of all umpires' strike three calls to put in a video so that should be out soon. I am also looking to continue making umpire balls/strikes clip videos, or compilation of interesting rules scenarios/situations I can easily find!
i like pat hoberg's ability to play umpire so much i want to write him a letter or something, i hope he knows how much we appreciate his consistent umping
Got a chance to meet him at a high school umpiring clinic in his native Iowa a few years ago. Great guy in person. Also got some of his old gear from when he was in AAA. I've been using it, but maybe someday it'll fetch at an auction? About as close as you can get to a rookie card for an umpire.
Not only is he a great ball strike caller. He also does not try to show up the players at all. He makes the call and looks away not to engage a player that may be upset.
The folks at closecallsports.com (essentially the umpire forums) have noticed this and are wondering the same thing. Best we can speculate is that it's an injury preventing him from being behind the plate. Pat was gone in the later part of last year as well, which is why he didn't work the playoffs.

I don’t think any of us can truly comprehend just how difficult it is to consistently call balls/strikes like this.
I fucking love this video so much
The highlight video I wanted… the highlight video I needed… if finally here thank you 🙏
It's so much fun to watch him ump. It's like a game within a game

You know your a good ump when you have a highlight reel.

He’s just the goat. That’s all we can say.

Pat GOATBERG
His consistency is very impressive
Probably the only umpire that, if a player argues with a call, the player is automatically the idiot.

Do you know why he hasn't been the plate umpire this year so far? He's in a rotation but never the plate ump
