Bánh chưng

The main event of Tất Niên - the Vietnamese Lunar New Year’s Eve dinner.
The story goes that King Hùng Vương the 6th wanted to pass on the throne to one of his sons. He told them that he would choose the prince who brought back the most delicious and meaningful food.
The king’s 18th son- Lang Liêu dreamed of a god who told him to make rice cakes because nothing was more valuable than rice.
Lang Liêu made a circular bánh dầy to represent the sky and a square bánh chưng to represent the land. The layers of bánh chưng also represented the love that parents give to their children.
On the day of the feast, the other brothers brought back incredible riches and delicacies from all over, but the king was deeply touched by the meaning behind Lang Liêu’s offering and chose him for the throne.
