I’ll be that friend that watches your story after you’ve been complaining about how much of a cheater he is thinking…. “This b just don’t learn her lesson” but also thinking “if she’s happy, I support her” 😂
@guppy guppy traditionally, people often make a big batch of 20 to 30 banh chung, so it involves prepping ingredients and wrapping them individually. They are then left to simmer in water overnight on a wood fire. It's done before lunar new year as a family affair since people have to take shifts watching over the fire lest it goes out. The time and effort required are one of the reasons why my family no longer do it.
@Van Le Thank You knew was a part i didnt understand which was wrapping and cooking methods&/times Question:: With people having instant pots now could that cut down on cooking times?? Still labor intensive BUT which other ways are they cooked.
@guppy guppy with a pressure cooker, it'd probably be down to 3-4 hours. Still, I don't think it's worth doing if you're only making 2-3 (with the size of the instant pot). You'd still need to soak the rice for at least 8 hrs and beans for 4. Plus the cutting of the leaf wrap and molding, it's just not worth doing for a few banh chung.
My mom makes huge batches of these, but she wraps them into small pyramid shapes instead of huge blocks like that. Moms make the best food & they are so selfless when it comes to feeding other people.
I love frying those as well it taste even better. It’s my first time seeing it done in a giant square we normally makes ours either triangle or long and round.
We call them “chhangban “ but we don’t usually put any fillings and can be deep fried too or after making the rice powder you knead the dough and then fry them so delicious it’s a Christmas traditional snacks here in mizoram
Omg, my family have this for every Tet and I'm scare of it 💀💀 everyday is fried Bánh Chưng day, but it actually good with pickled leeks and dried shrimp tho and also, this with Thịt kho hột vịt, bomb
This is like bak chang as we call it in Malaysia. It is glutinous rice with pork, mung bean/black eyes peas, mushroom, salty duck egg yoke and other filling you like wrap with bamboo leaves. Then steam or boil for hours. Most people just eat like that as it is savoury but I like to eat like you, dip with sugar because I like the crunchy when chew plus sweetness balance with saltiness of those fillings 😋
Subscribed! Was bit skeptical before with your ugly eating technique, but this video did it for me. Banh Chung is one my favourite Vietnamese dishes if done right like your parents have. The key is to use high quality sticky rice, a good ratio of all the ingredients and boiling it until tender (about 8-12 hours depending how big it is). I eat this cake year round not just during New Years (Tet), and as you've mentioned it's not cheap due to how much time it takes to cook it and the technique required to wrap it perfectly.
This is definitely the first time I've seen bánh chưng rán with sugar (is that sugar, right?) 🤣 a very new concept to me but yeah this makes me craving for some bánh chưng right now 🥹
When i was youngerr I read a book about a girl and her family leaving vietnam during the wad (its "inside out and back again") and this was mentioned and i got so hungry wondering what it was and what it tastes like.... now i get to see :) so cool so yummy!!
Looks like suman in the Philippines that we also dip in sugar or coco jam except there are no fillings. Looks interesting! Now I wanna try this one toooo
I want to try this dish so bad. I’m from Australia and we do have a large Vietnamese population but I’m yet to see this sold in any Vietnamese stores or restaurants.
You will most likely found this during Lunar new year around late January and February. They’ll be in Vietnamese supermarket or a lot of people take order to make them. I know a lot of people make them and advertise on fb marketplace
That low key sting came out of no where and it cracked me up something wicked. It feels like you want to share something with the class 🤣🤣🤣. Your Eomma is so lovely too 💖
I ate this for the first time this week in da nang. I saw a lady selling this and corn on her bicycle. I brought it for 10k vnd, it was tasty. It remind of a Vietnamese gimbap and did not get food posioning, so double win.
Banh chung (Vietnamese: bánh chưng (餅蒸), Chinese: 越南方糉) is a traditional Vietnamese dish made from glutinous rice, mung beans, and other ingredients, and eaten for Lunar New Year.
@@alissanguyen_ I will have to try it! Unlike you and your family, who can make them whenever you feel like it, I have to wait until next new year before I can get my hand on some. But mark my word, I will try them with sugar. It's like eating Xôi with a savory aftertaste from the pork. 😆

My family would reject any way of eating this other than with soy sauce. But those look bomb and take such a long time too, kudos to your parents
I agree, delicious, but the sugar killed me!!
I know nothing about this ...i understand quantity(and time) of making something that big. What else is it that makes it difficult to make.
