Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Theo, please be careful with burning pine. It requires you to clean your chimney more often due to the sap creating cresol.. We don't burn pine unless we have to. Also we clean the chimney's 2-3 times a season.

This is what these guys always needed. Miracle mountain is the perfecta therapy against anything that may come their way. I have never seen Bee so bubbly and enthusiastic. She is glowing with life! If you stack the firewood where you cut it, it dries much faster & is easier to retrieve later. But, yes, build a wood shed nearer the house. Always have 2 years' worth of firewood (usually around 6-7 full cords per year - look up how much a full cord is), and burn the oldest cords each year. That way if one of you gets sick or injured (god forbid!), there's still dry wood & less struggles to keep the house warm. Keep in mind you won't always be young like you are. My grandparents taught me this.

Just FYI a cord of wood is a stack of wood that is 4ft high x 4ft wide x 8ft long. My wife and I usually go through 3 cord a winter in the Pacific Northwest. Hope that helps. Very good advice Aine.

Also, wood takes about a year to be ready to burn, itâs not so much the rain that makes it too damp, itâs the inner moisture that has to dry out and this takes a year.

Remember after the fire when many of us told you that even though the fire was devastating, that now that all the undergrowth had burned...that new grow would come through. Look how beautiful things are looking now, and it isn't even spring yet. Yes, there is a lot of work for you two to do, but in the end, it will all be what the two of you have created and not what the previous owners wanted it to be. The hard work just makes it all that more precious. Enjoy you two!

Chipping in the forest is exceptionally good for the trees because the chipping stops loss of moisture so atthe height of the sun the trees can still have a drink and mature without harm đ

I remember when started to build our home on 10acres, we thought our property ended at our neighbours farm fence, but later we learned that our neighbours had 5acres so we had twice as much land than we first thought. So know what you mean when you say haven't been to all areas yet.

You say restore it to it's former glory...that means before the fire & flooding...or also how it was in the time it was worked by previous owners. All that ground where the fire burned is PRIME garden soil, because of the Ash, you should put out Strawberry beds there or Beans, or whatever you're growing in the Spring
