Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Love that you got your road access fixed up- also not an easy task. Your almost caught up to pre-fire, and better for it! Thanks for taking us on your journey!
Several thoughts: You had the right machine and operator for the pond job, He was quite skilled and the extending boom of the backhoe gave him the extra reach needed for your pond. I suggest you immediately plant native seed mix/blend (grasses and flowers) on your lane, dam and surrounding areas that have been regraded with excavated sediment. Deep plant roots will play a big role in holding the sediment in place in the next storm event. Your emergency spillway must be hard surfaced to resist catastrophic failure in the future. The biggest flat stones one person can handle cemented into place to armor the spillway is a practical solution given the resources on your property.
I cannot believe the constant improvements / repairs you guys have completed. It is absolutely amazing what you have achieved in such a short space of time 👏👏👏❤

The digger/back hoe operator was very knowledgeable with the machine's use and did an awesome job digging the flood soil/ash to rehabilitate the water retaining pond back to its intended function.

Beautiful job guys! My husband and I are in the middle of our own restoration project. It was also an abandoned property. It was built back in the 1930s in North Carolina's Blue Ridge mountains. It's an awesome experience. We love seeing another couple on the same journey that's adores the process as much as we do. Good luck on the rest of your projects!
Both of you have worked so hard on when the fire came and demolished everything that was terrible so glad to see you coming back bigger and better blessings to both of you
Pond recovery work and road rebuild is top notch. On the way to become a beautiful picnic, recreational area. Should attract more wildlife. Mount a remote camera when available. Should be interesting. Can't wait to see the variety of animals. Massive, massive, step forward - fire proofing, flood control, water retention, land reclamation, well/tank water reserves, watershed areas, recreational areas.
Maybe later, make two or three smaller cascading feeder ponds. Protect culvert areas whenever water or pipes run below the road. Plants deep rooting trees and shrubs to prevent soil erosion, shade nesting areas.
Water now running to main reservoir pond/moat. Land cooling effect. Do a delayed time stamp by month for seasonal fill.
It just makes my heart happy watching you bring your property back to life and the joy you two have while doing it. 💪🏼💙❤️

You likely have sufficient volume and velocity to power a micro OR mini hydro plant. You may be able to power the whole property with the electricity produced, Definitely worth a survey to determine the potential.
Definitely, so much elevation there it would just make sense and not stop the lake filling either.
(Thanks Uncle Ed!) I can't wait to see...and hear....the babbling brook. This water diversion project is really going to make a difference. Getting the new pipe was a smart thing to do. Trying to fix the old version with new couplings would have been insanely expensive compared to this. Good job Theo and Ed!
[TBH - The 'ditch on the right side of the road' looked non-existent (most of the way down) from my side of the camera. The very top section looked really good, but after that I struggled to see what you were talking about Bea.]

The use of the UTV and the rachet straps really facilitate the hauling and securing process with the long pipe. I like the slo-mo of when the pipe popped Theo in the face. Bea, it was enjoyable to hear you narrating along the way.

You guys have your blood, sweat, and tears in this property. You guys are awesome land stewards. Is there a plan for the eucalyptus trees? I've seen a lot of properties there are thining them out because of fire safety. Removing the one around homes, animal shelters. Are you putting native plants by the pond? Looking forward to your videos.
With all that head you could run hydroelectric power generation which would be a great back in winter if you are looking to go properly off grid for electricity?

The new flat area by the pond is great; but you should not "bury" the tree trunks. You can kill a tree that way. Dig some of the dirt out around the trees. Check it out. It is good Ed could help you

3:45 if you do have the space I'd suggest making a "mini-floodplain", this really helps in slowing down floods, as the water has more space :)
