The owner of original Japanese Hagoromo chalk factory has retired due to his old age and health. But he could not find a successor or buyer in Japan. A Korean math teacher, who is ardent lover of the chalk, remanted discontinued production of the best chalk in the world. So he himself bought the chalk brand, machines and skill from the owner and resume the chalk production in Korea as "Sejongmall" company. Hagoromo chalk is now produced in Korea and sold worldwide. Still the best chalk in the world.

@A. Meowzki the exact some machines and method. They also use the same raw materials brought from the same place. The new owner apparently tried materials from somewhere else, he says that didn't go as planned.

I saw the short video of mathematicians, physicists .. the Nobel prize level types singing praises of a Japanese chalk of immense repute, blackboards and how essential it is for their work .. the Japanese chalk company was closing down, and most of them purchased almost a lifetime supply of this chalk ..

A Korean company bought the recipe and machinery and hired some of the employees, so the chalk is still in production.
And it's not as expensive as you'd think. You can buy 72 sticks of white for $20. If you use chalk every day for work, that can add up, but if using a better tool makes you less annoyed, it could be totally worth it.
I only use chalk in my workshop for project lists and procedures, so a box will last me years, maybe a decade.

God, am I going to start collecting chalk as well? It started with nice ballpoints, then moved on to fountain pens, then I looked to pencils, now chalk?!
Whats next? Limited edition, high grade, Japanese finger paint? God help me. For real.

I was so lucky to be a teacher in Japan that used this chalk every day and every lesson. At the time, I had no idea about the differences between chalks. I thought they were all the same. But after writing my first letter on a chalkboard with Hagoromo, I immediately inspected the chalk. I knew this was different from other chalks.

I was in the 2nd grade, I sharpened my pencil then went to sit in my chair. As I was pulling my chair to me I had my pencil in my hand facing up. I sat on it. Ended up at the doctors office that day. I’m 38 years old and I’ll never forget it.

I saw a video on this a while back and I wanted to try it, but I don't have a chalk board or a use for it.
It's funny that it has almost the same story as black wing as well, with it going out of business and getting picked up by a different company.

Shame on you for making that poor woman enact a punishment activity as if she were the Bart-ette Simpson of your household.
Actually here in the US we had an article about this chalk quite some time ago, describing roughly the equivalent of what happened whenThe original Blackwings or the original Col-erase pencils were discontinued, there was word that the Korean chalk was going to go out of manufacture and a mad dash ensued, mostly among aforementioned scientists and teachers, to buy up as much remaining supply as possible. Apparently however they figured out a way to keep going, so congratulations on your acquisition of something that I frankly do not think I will ever need, so I will vicariously enjoy your usage of same chalk on your frankly unique refrigerator.

I’m still resisting the Hovel and the Iris! Be well. (And if you are reading this and not listening to this gentleman’s podcast, 1857, go check it out!)

I absolutely hate chalk, if I touch it I instantly feel like my skin is dehydrated and I need to get it off of me and wet my hands and drink water. Is that weird or what? I also hate the sound, I have an overall skin crawling sensation I can't adequately describe. Maybe this chalk is the solution.

It is made in Korea, so it is a Korean.
Japanese companies wanted to change the brand and name of the company which would have destroyed the legacy of the owner, so the original Japanese owner didn't agree to handover the company to them.
Meanwhile a Korean meet all the standards that the owner insisted and agreed to never change the name of the company. He impressed the owner despite the owner warning him that the chalk business will decline in the future due to steady rise in the use of whiteboards.
The owner sold 2 out of 3 original machines, the secret recipe and patent for the hagoromo name to the Korean math teacher. That implies hagoromo is 100 percent a Korean company now.
