This is a cry from the human soul. The loss of loved ones at sea. The passionate love that is suffering and power... Dulce Pontes singing Canção do Mar is a miraculous experience. Thank you Beth for reacting to this performance.
You cannot sing Fado without passion trust me... People will notice, Fado is about passion, melancholic, love, saudade.
That was absolutely stunning, in the truest sense of the word. The song really went on a journey and her performance was just captivating. I didn't understand a word of it, but I felt every note.
Portugal is a sailors and fishers country. I'm Brazilian and my country was colonized by portugueses in the XVI century. So the Portuguese music has many references to the sea and the sadness of women that waiting for their men to return by the sea. This song, Canção do Mar (Sea Song) is about it.
One word...portugal...to its core. I should know. I am one of them. Proud of more than one thousand year history. And what you are hearing, it's pure history...
It’s FADO, and that’s the way you supposed to feel by listening to it, greetings from Portugal 😉
That's the beauty of fado, you don't have to understand to feel
I went dancing in my boat
Beyond the cruel sea
And the sea, bellowing,
Tells me I went to steal
The matchless light
Of your lovely gaze
Come find out if the sea is right
Come here and see my heart dance
If I dance in my boat
I won't go out to the cruel sea
I won't even tell it where I went to sing,
Smile, dance, live, dream with you (bear in mind, in Portuguese you say "dream with" and not "dream of")
The GREAT Ennio Morricone fell on love by her voice and everyone can see why that happened!
Dulce Pontes is one of those singers that unfortunately don't appear often in Portugal. I do love other portuguese singers and they're extremely talented (Teresa Salgueiro, Mariza and Ana Moura are some of the latest examples) but Dulce Pontes is easily and by far, one of the very best ever imo!
As a portuguese myself, I understand every word of it, but her voice is so powerful and her interpretation is so sublime that I'm happy people from all over the world love it too
Nossa língua portuguesa é maravilhosa, somos privilegiados!🥰
Sou brasileiro, mas não consegui entender quase nada 😂😂
Mas a música é muito bela. Show
Im proud of be Portuguese 🇵🇹🇵🇹
She's absolutely great 😍🌟I saw her perform twice live in Amsterdam and in the Hague an absolute delight I don't speak Portugese but still I feel the music ❤If you ever get the chance to go to one of her concerts, GO!!!! you won't be disappointed I heard this specific song in a movie and was completely overblown by it and went to investigate this song and the singer and from then on I have been a huge fan
Primal Fear (1996), with Richard Gere and Edward Norton. Great movie and great song.
I recommend looking up the lyrics. Fado lyrics are true poetry
Richard Gere heard it at a shop and he said that he wanted this song for the movie. If you like Dulce Pontes' version, try the original, the "real deal": Amália Rodrigues! I'm portuguese but not a huge fan of Fado, but Amália was the greatest fado singer of all time!
If you want I can translate the lyrics. Don't try to translate it on google translater because it's horrid!
@@vervideosgiros1156 Yes Amalia was the queen of Fado This Friday I went to a concert of Christina Branco and she payed tribute to her with an accapella song of hers Beautiful 😭❤️I dudn’t know Richard Gere suggested the song good for him because there started my love for the Fado
Hello
She’s one of the best Portuguese singers.
She’s my friend cousin’s and I can tell you she’s very simple person, not a “star” like so many others.
And she plays piano also.
Nice video 🔝❣️🇵🇹
one of the best? hahaha She is THE BEST BY FAR
Humble Star 🎉
I first heard this song in the great film Primal Fear. It actually was a plot point where Richard Gere heard the song in a bar and wanted to get the song to play it in his car. It's haunting melody fit so well with that haunting movie.
Thank you for your react to Dulce Pontes 😍🇵🇹
that's why fado is called " the portuguese soul "
Dulce Pontes for me is the best voice in Portugal.
I do love Mariza, Ana Moura, Teresa Salgueiro and others, but yeah... i have to agree with you.
I agree.
She's the second best voice ever in Portugal. Only behind Amália
This is one of the best songs i heard. I still remember when i heard first time in the English movie ‘primal fear’, it felt like nothing else i have experienced.
A good fadista(Fado singer) sing with the emotion that's the key of fado!!
Her voice awakens your deep hidden emotions. That's the power of vibration!
It's so nice that this video came out on april 25th, which is our (portuguese) national day of freedom from dictatorship.
Also, thank you for your videos. they are amazing!
Dulce sings beautifully, no one can sing fado but us portuguese, those quarters of tones are our Arabic inheritance, Fado is very 'middle eastern' that's why it has that peculiar 'atmosphere'.
Faz sentido. Agora que vc mencionou o toque árabe na canção, eu pude perceber a referência.
É de fato muito emocionante.
Her voice is as powerful as the sea!
Beautiful.... Quite beautiful...
Thank you Beth....
Cantora esplêndida e música maravilhosa.
Canção do Mar é.um Fado nosso 🇵🇹
“Fado” means “fate” in Portuguese. And most lyrics are very emotional bc they deal with the dramatic, losses, and love. Even if you get the emotions I recommend checking a translation of the lyrics. Fado is like poetry, so her emotions are on point with the words. In my interpretation she is comparing the sea to love itself, or maybe her lover. She clenches her fists to express how the sea is cruel and rough but then sings smoothly wondering if the sea is right about her heart. And it might just be my impression but all the ups and downs in the notes also reminds me of the sea’s movement
fado means fado. not fate. fate in português is destino.
A origem do Fado

@@annabaked2954 sorry but you are wrong
@@sharkjames6314 a sério que vais buscar Wikipedia??? Fado é fado! Existem palavras no mundo que pura e simplesmente não se traduzem!!! Agora dizer que fado significa saudade, dor, angústia, amor, paixão!! Sim! MAS FADO É FADO.
almost, fado is better translated as "the ultimate fate". In the end, everything dies, and that can be felt in both the melodies and lyrics of fado songs. Even those about love, you feel that impending truth, as peoples die, so does their love.
Dulce Pontes
Her mournful voice Lead me to the abyss
Finally, mesmerizing and magical voice, please react to "Amor a Portugal" from her. Greetings.
My ABSOLUTE favourite Fado Singer after our beloved Amália Rodrigues (the Queen of Fado).
@Beth Roars,
This song was featured in the movie Primal Fear with Richard Gere and Edward Norton, in the mid-90s.
It IS very powerful. Dulce Pontes is a very unique singer.
Fado is always great.
This version is not a fado. Great song and performance of one of the most technical singers ever, probably
This is the best voice i ever heard in my life. Literally
Dulce Pontes sang in a duet with the Italian singer Andrea Bocelli around 23 years ago. ❤
The country of the sea
made the world known🇵🇹🇵🇹
This is pure gold, both in the magical, impossible to describe in words, voice and being of Dulce, but also these very subtle and deep observations about singing. Much love to you from South Florida.
I love how you are very technical in evaluating these, the singing technique and "output", no matter what the language is (I'm a layman when it comes to music/singing myself). But also I love you have the sensibility to appreciate the different stuff going on, the emotional stuff - regardless if the technique is perfect or not and also regardless of the language of the words. Again, as a layman myself, I appreciate these videos for exploring all of that and also stuff I hadn't thought about in my favourite songs. Cheers and thanks for all your work.
The shear power of her voice is breathtaking!
Dulce Pontes, the most magical female voice in the world!!!
1000 years of soul...on one voice
Omg I've been waiting for this reaction for so long. Thank you Beth. This song and this performance always gives me chills. Love from Portugal ♥️🇵🇹
My dear Beth, Fado is a deep melancholic type of music and to sing it perfectly you have to open up and share your soul and deepest feelings. It is not unusual at all to see the singer and the audience crying during a show.
Heard this song in a movie once and then spent a good hour trying to find it. Really love it!
Have you ever listened to Sertab Erener? She's a Turkish singer who won Eurovision in 2003. I recommend her song Ask (pronounced ashk), there's a really awesome acoustic version of it on youtube! It also has an English version called Leave.
Thank you for Dulce Pontes! Amazing! Amazing!
I was at this concert with my sister, back in 2005. Memorable concert! She's a wonderful singer and a great humble person. I met him once, years after this.
Fado the Portuguese blues full of Hireath and Latin longings..
Best song in the world
Dulce Pontes is So Amazing!!🙏🥰💖💖
Bravíssimo dulce pontes 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹💕💕👏👏👏👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
My fav fados song of allllll time
Dulce Pontes could possibly be the worlds greatest singer. No one has a motor like her! Just flawless always!
Rangers , Portugal na alma e pátria no coração
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. Love fado, love Dulce Pontes.
So much emotion in this beautiful fado ♥️
Actually…not a Fado …
Isto não é um fado.
The arrangement of this version may not sound like traditional fado but the original sung by the fado queen herself Amalia Rodrigues is, in every sense, a fado song. Both versions are hauntingly beautiful.
Portuguese female vocalists are THE BEST IN THE WORLD
I love this! Been listening to your reactions for so long. To listen to you react to music from my country warms my heart...
Love your reactions! Anyway, u should try to check-out this tune by Amalia Rodrigues, the original interpreter the song was written in the first place for. It's another world for the vocal uniqueness, technic, and universality as well.
They sing with very ❤❤❤❤❤ sentimental songs
Thank you Beth!
Dulce is a master at what she does.
English translation of this song is "Song By The Sea".
'Sea's song' plainly put.
Exquisitely beautiful!!! The universal feelings and emotions expressed are truly beyond words!!!
I miss my Lisboa ❤.
Portuguese Fado is just like the waves of the ocean, it has its top and belows. btw Hello from Portugal! :D
Always I hear this song, I think about the sea and the historical conection portugueses have with it. Hello from Brazil. :)
This song is fantastic! She was in her 20s when she first recorded it.
Veja Dulce na Grécia... fenomenal!!!...
Richard Gere is a huge fan of her to the point of having "Canção do Mar" sang by her in the movie "Primal Fear".
She amazing ❤
This song was on the soundtrack of Primal Fear and in the movie you see Richard Gere putting her cd in the car and listen to this song.
Proud moment as a Portuguese to hear our national treasure Dulce Pontes in such movie.
This song is so emotional and carries such story and history that is definitely part of the soul of Portugal.
Thank you for the review.
You explained that very well. Control the emotions is what truly great singers can do.
You should definitely look for “Teresa Salgueiro” and “Os Madredeus”! Maybe the song “Haja o Que Houver”!! 🤩👏
I love Fado so much. You should listen to Mariza, also a Portuguese fado singer. I sugest Chuva (concerto em Lisboa)
Linda canção.

Magnifique chanson portugaise et magnifique voux
Bravo 👍😇🙏
I love your reaction.
Great reaction to go with a GREAT song!
In the old days in the fishing villages the wives and family would say goodbye to the fisherman like it was the last time they would see them. For some it was.
Morning wives would also go to the beach to pay their tribute to their lost ones.
This is a song about Adeus(saying goodbye) & Saudade(missing someone).
If you want to hear another portuguese singer with an unique voice, please react to our Eurovision entry of this year: Maro - Saudade, Saudade. Her voice will give you shivers non-stop.
Comparar Dulce com Maro?… Deus me livre
@@livingthedream8539 - Mas alguém aqui está a comparar alguém?
@@livingthedream8539 Pode acreditar 😂😂 Jesus do Céu
Outstanding song.
this song is "canção do mar" which means song of the sea. portugal always was a country very related to the sea, lots of fisherman towns and we were one of the biggest explorers in the world trhough the sea. this song is about the broken hearts from the people who died in the sea
Emotions are powerful when combined with good technique, so that they don't bottle up inside, but actually leave your body through voice.
Beth, if you like that much Fado's melancholic singing you MUST do a react to the queen of Fado: Amália Rodrigues.
God. What a voice 🙏
Canção do Mar (Song of the sea)
I went for a dance in my rowboat
Beyond the cruel sea
And roaring, he says
That i went to steal
The peerless light in your eyes, so beautiful
Come and see if he is right
Come and see, my heart is dancing
If i go dancing in my rowboat
I won't sail the cruel sea
And i won't tell him where i went to sing,
To smile, to dance, to live
and dream of you

Hi, Beth! Please react to Salvador Sobral "Amar pelos Dois" (To Love by both of Us/the two of us. Idk which translation is more accurate). Salvador Sobral won Eurovision contest with this song, in 2017).l
If you want, check out the translation of "Ó Gente da Minha Terra. It's here on the comments!
UAU!! 💜💚 Dulce Pontes,, é incrivelmente maravilhosa...🤗
This was the official soundtrack music from "Primal Fear" with Richard Gere and Edward Norton. I love Dulce Pontes.
Beth react Dulce Pontes singing "Amor a Portugal", kisses from Portugal 🇵🇹
Lindo ❤🇵🇹
This is the "Song of the Sea" which channels the despair and torment of sailors braving the high seas and all the sadness when they dont come back.
That's Saudade
that is Fado , must fiill the eeeemoottioons
Look for Madredeus, she has a unique voice also :)
Just in info, the location is in Athens Greece, it's an ancient theater with perfect acoustics
This is the live performance where to really appreciate her power, control and range. Perfect clean sound track

There's another vídeo where she sings "Amor a Portugal". Is very hard not to cry.
I went to one of her concerts in London 2 weeks ago 2022
Hello Beth, please listen, Dulce Pontes "Meu Amor sem Aranjuez", the soul of Portugal, fantastic, thank you
You should listen to the official video of the song which tells the story about it. You also listen to madredeus - o pastor, haja o que houver and a vaca de fogo. They are also fado.
Where is the magnificent Teresa Salgueiro from Madredeus?
Yeah. That's definitively another banger! Also one of my favorites!
Yes! Fantastic singer!
Bitiful
Thank you for your reaction to this powerful song. If you’re looking to do another Portuguese song, I would like to suggest Mariza’s “Barco Negro” (live). It’s also an old fado song that is both haunting and electrifying. The percussions and vocals will blow you away.
Yes we Portuguese sing our hearts out and the only consolation we find to our problems is many times to sing them out loud.
Portuguese women are genetically endowed to sing in a powerful way and in general they all have loud powerful voices.
Before cellphones my mother used to call me back home from across town and there's no way I wouldn't answer the call. :)
If you are interested, here is one of the few and oldest recordings of traditional Fado so you can see how the tradition has been kept.

Fui bailar no meu batel
Além do mar cruel
E o mar bramindo
Diz que eu fui roubar
A luz sem par
Do teu olhar tão lindo
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Se eu bailar no meu batel
Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Se eu bailar no meu batel
Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo
