This is a cry from the human soul. The loss of loved ones at sea. The passionate love that is suffering and power... Dulce Pontes singing Canção do Mar is a miraculous experience. Thank you Beth for reacting to this performance.

Portugal is a sailors and fishers country. I'm Brazilian and my country was colonized by portugueses in the XVI century. So the Portuguese music has many references to the sea and the sadness of women that waiting for their men to return by the sea. This song, Canção do Mar (Sea Song) is about it.

“Fado” means “fate” in Portuguese. And most lyrics are very emotional bc they deal with the dramatic, losses, and love. Even if you get the emotions I recommend checking a translation of the lyrics. Fado is like poetry, so her emotions are on point with the words. In my interpretation she is comparing the sea to love itself, or maybe her lover. She clenches her fists to express how the sea is cruel and rough but then sings smoothly wondering if the sea is right about her heart. And it might just be my impression but all the ups and downs in the notes also reminds me of the sea’s movement

fado means fado. not fate. fate in português is destino.
      A origem do Fado

almost, fado is better translated as "the ultimate fate". In the end, everything dies, and that can be felt in both the melodies and lyrics of fado songs. Even those about love, you feel that impending truth, as peoples die, so does their love.

I love how you are very technical in evaluating these, the singing technique and "output", no matter what the language is (I'm a layman when it comes to music/singing myself). But also I love you have the sensibility to appreciate the different stuff going on, the emotional stuff - regardless if the technique is perfect or not and also regardless of the language of the words. Again, as a layman myself, I appreciate these videos for exploring all of that and also stuff I hadn't thought about in my favourite songs. Cheers and thanks for all your work.

    Hrtr is the translation...
I went dancing on my boat
    Beyond the cruel sea
    And the sea roars
    Say I went to steal
    The unparalleled light
    From your look so beautiful
Come and find out if the sea will be right
Come here and watch my heart dance
If I dance on my boat
I'm not going to the cruel sea
And I don't even tell you where I went to sing
Smile, dance, live, dream with you
Come and find out if the sea will be right
Come here and watch my heart dance
If I dance on my boat
I'm not going to the cruel sea
And I don't even tell you where I went to sing
Smile, dance, live, dream with you

You should listen to the official video of the song which tells the story about it. You also listen to madredeus - o pastor, haja o que houver and a vaca de fogo. They are also fado.

Thank you for your reaction to this powerful song. If you’re looking to do another Portuguese song, I would like to suggest Mariza’s “Barco Negro” (live). It’s also an old fado song that is both haunting and electrifying. The percussions and vocals will blow you away.

Yes we Portuguese sing our hearts out and the only consolation we find to our problems is many times to sing them out loud.
Portuguese women are genetically endowed to sing in a powerful way and in general they all have loud powerful voices.
Before cellphones my mother used to call me back home from across town and there's no way I wouldn't answer the call. :)
If you are interested, here is one of the few and oldest recordings of traditional Fado so you can see how the tradition has been kept.

    Letras
    Fui bailar no meu batel
    Além do mar cruel
    E o mar bramindo
    Diz que eu fui roubar
    A luz sem par
    Do teu olhar tão lindo
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Se eu bailar no meu batel
    Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
    Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Se eu bailar no meu batel
    Não vou ao mar cruel
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
    Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo
