People don’t sing this way anymore. The feel Klaus has in his voice is untouchable.
Huge fan of the band. Saw them live at Rock in Rio 2019. His singing was still superb, even at the age of 70!
And not just "for 70" either ; his voice practically sounds like it does on albums, and even way back in the day during the 70s and heyday of the 80s.
Even other vocalists who are still bringing it, they obviously sound a little different from age, bringing it down to lower registers so as not to strain their instrument, but Klaus, he hardly has changed at all. It's crazy, especially if it's true that he had some major vocal chord surgery back in the day that threatened his singing career.

In the beginning, Klaus learned the songs phonetically in English. Their first MTV interview required a translator, by their next one after that first US tour, translation was not needed.
One of the best power ballads ever in my opinion. Still gives me chills every time I listen to it.

It's because there's nothing added to it. It's stripped down, clean, no theatrics; just a pure sounding ballad.

The most amazing thing is he's singing in his second language. They are an amazing band.
Not really a big deal. You don't have to know what it means to sing it well, so most experienced singers have performed in multiple languages. I am only a church choir singer, and have sung in at least eight languages.

The best ballad of all time, PERIOD. Klaus Meine is probably the best singer of all time, he is so good, that you could think he's doing playback when he sings live, if you didn't know better...(of course, this is actually playback, but listen to him from "world wide live")

Klaus Meine is by far one of the best Continental European vocalists of all time his vocal range is beautifully soaring and to think he may have lost his voice permanently in '81 and had to take a long period of rest to recover.

I am not a huge fan of hard rock/metal but Klaus and Dio are two vocalists who blow me away.
In the early 1980's at the height of the bands popularity the lead singer Klaus Mein was diagnosed with a throat condition that took his voice from him. His doctors told him that he would not likely ever be able to sing again. The band supported Klaus and said they would not replace him, if memory serves they said he was irreplicable. Klaus had several surgeries on his throat and therapy. His voice thankfully returned.
Klaus is nearly 74 this year and still a great rock singer! Also he lives the next village to ours ( if he is not on tour). Live long and prosperous Klaus (and all Scorpions)! 🎶🖖

Scorpions started in 1965 and just released a new album. They are touring as we speak. From 65-70 they only performed in German. But switched to English and took off. This is considered one of the first Metal ballads.
No this came out in 1984, Def Leppards Bringing on the Heartache is the true first metal ballad from 1980 😅
Klaus Meine. One of the greatest hard rock/metal singers ever. Another metal ballad worth listening to is "We'll burn the sky" at Tokyo Tapes.

I unfortunately have not seen them live since the late 80s or early 90s.
I've seen the Scorpions several times and they're one of the most entertaining nights you can get. It's a little bit disconcerting however that Klaus is miming on this particular clip. Watch live to feel the magic!
Back in the 80’ (in hHigh School 🏫) I always Loved ❤️ the mighty passionate singing 🎤 and the mighty guitar 🎸 warrior songs that The Scorpions 🦂 Belted out all these years but to see the newer generations discover it and appreciate it - it makes it even better .
If you saw them live you know Klaus voice has power and on top of that is so distinct. Marvelous. I saw them 4 times from 92-91 and every time was great. A real trooper.

I saw the Scorpions live about 2 decades ago and they were exceptional.
He was the first rock lead singer I ever heard sound as good if not better on stage live than on the album. Second singer I heard destroy his own songs live would be lead singer of Shinedown.
Scorpions one of rocks if not rock's most underrated legends for over 50 years now.Klause top vocalist that dosen't need to sing the highest of the highs to show he's right there with the best of them.

Klaus is one of the most unique singers in the history of rock music and the scorpions are known for their incredible ballads and Klaus is now in his early 70s and still has a great voice for his age ... they are rock gods and rightly so!

Klaus Meine has an amazing voice that really cuts through the music like a blade. Early stuff like Speedy's Coming, In Trance, Fly to the Rainbow is my favourite. Holiday is another ballad and there's a live clip from Paris, I think, that is really great.
I heard this masterpiece live in Asunción-Paraguay, it was so magical, it gives me goosebumps just remembering it ❤

These are my boys Beth....have known them since 2007 and still keep in touch with Matthias Jabs, lead guitar, even though I'm not well enough to go see them anymore. This is one of their most famous classics and the very song I heard in 1984 that introduced me to Scorpions' music in the first place. France has a popular story about this song. It's said, the year this debuted in that country, the next year, they had an incredible baby boom. lol Great choice of video, but it is lip synched. But who cares? ha Klaus' unique voice shook me up. I love how he sings in the back of his throat to create some of his best screams. And yes the breathiness he does is sexy. ha BTW, the one riff that Matthias does in that part of the song, is so plaintiff, the guitar is almost crying. His style literally catapulted this band to another level that made other bands nervous and jealous. Along with their dramatic flair, their craziness and the fun they all had on stage, made them a force to be reckoned with. And I would be remiss to leave Rudolf out of the actual lead part that he changed with Matthias on this one. Every now and then they changed lead. And yes I am so damn proud that I got to known them. They are precious beautiful heart warming guys.
As for the English, yes it was very hard for them to translate lyrics into how they should be, but their drummer, Herman Rarebell, at the time, already knew English pretty well and between him and their producer, I think, helped with all of that. But eventually they all learned English and all was well with the world. lol
BTW, Matthias loves having new outfits made for new tours (such as the one they just started in Vegas) and twice now, in the past, he has sent me photos of them when they're done. He told me when this 3rd set is done he will send me photos again. FYI: His Mother-In-Law is an incredible silk painter, so his shirts are silks with her paintings.

I would have to look it up again to be sure, but I recall reading something about vocalist Klaus Meine not knowing a single word of English, and he taught himself phonetically, or through the songwriting process, or both? Whichever it was, it was an impressive reveal. I also recall him having vocal issues, like, nodes were forming on his vocal chords or something dire like that, and it seemed certain his singing career was over, but after the surgery his voice was better than ever. Much like Bonnie Tyler.
As for detecting his accent, it only comes out in one odd way that I've noticed, and that's how he says "way" or "away" ; it sounds like "wee" or "ah-wee", lol. Not always, but usually.
That song has been a favorite of mine since my childhood. Thanks a lot for covering it ! I recently started bass at the conservatory, I should definitely ask my teacher to work on one of Scorpions' song.

This IS the Power Ballad all power ballads aspired to be! Klause & Ronnie James were friends. There is a song on CZcams were Klause is singing Rainbow In The Dark with Dio. Quality is not great but it gives you the general idea of them singing together.
You can't hear his accent? :) "Ere we goh ageen all de wey from de staht" Just ribbing, but as a native-born American, it's pretty amplified to my ears. Anyway, Klaus is a master no matter what language he's singing in. Hats off to you both! Thanks for doing this.
As many times as I've heard this song, I could tell right away that this is not live audio, but the exact studio/cd version layed over a live concert. It still is awesome to hear though. A masterpiece.
The version is the studio one, not live, was playback but Klaus is a genius, and probably the best rock ballad of all time
A rock band graced with a great singer is so good, one with a great singer and lead guitarist is next level. The bass and the drums need to be there as well but the lead singer and lead guitar for the Scorpions are both masters at their craft. Great song.

Klaus is one of the best Rock vocalists ever
Klaus Meine grew up in Hanover, Germany when it was occupied by the British. So he was exposed to English very early. At the end of WWII Germany was divided into four zones to the US, England, France, and the Soviet Union. The zones joined at a place called checkpoint charlie.
Sadly I don't think this is live though ... seems like they were on some show that wouldn't allow the band to perform live ... there are plenty of the scorpions live shows about though that prove that Klaus is an incredible live performer so go check them out!

Yepp it's not live. The guitars aren't even plugged in to the amps.
This was the norm back then. You will find that most if not all TV shows, especially in Europe, did playback for all bands and singers. That could be due to not having the right technology then to recreate the sound properly on TV. But the song remains the same to react to. ??? I especially love their way of performing.

Saw them on the first leg of "Wind Of Change" tour in early 90's in Brussels, Belgium. Awesome band live. Great night with friends.

This is really a standard for every power ballad of the 80s. Love the "floydian" rhythm guitar in the verse. The chorus is pure explosion of love and regret, with such a powerful and distinctive voice.
Love Scorpions and saw them live many times in the 80s.
Some people are just born a plane above the rest of us in talent. Scorpions always had that beautiful melodic sound that somehow doesn't detract from their more purely rock songs.

About Klaus Meines english pronuncing... he's actually not very good in english. If you listen to interviews in english he has got a very strong german accent.

Might as well be a perfect rendition. This man is insane, even when I saw them live just a few years ago he performed flawlessly.
Considering Klaus is harmonizing with himself at the end, I'd say this is the recording. Still a great song, though.

Not a ballad, but I'd you want to hear what Klaus Meine sounded like before he had surgery to his vocal chords, check out "The Zoo" from 1980's Animal Magnetism album. There is a very different kind of ballad on that album titled "Lady Starlight" though I think "The Zoo" exemplifies his vocal sound during that time.
Scorpions are all from Germany, but from when they formed... they always sang in English in the hopes of hitting the U.S./U.K. music scene one day.
You should check out some early Scorpions.... definitely worth it. Sails of Charon, Yellow Raven, In Trance, Inheritance, Fly to the Rainbow... songs from early days... so many good ones though.
I always loved his voice. They are still in my top 5 of best sounding live bands I've seen. I still love their reggae tinged song, IS THERE ANYBODY THERE?

Being an American who has lived in Germany for several years and studied Linguistics, I can definitely hear a difference in his pronunciation when compared to Americans.
That being said, I think it is very beautiful and unique and not at all a bad thing. He definitely pronounces things "well'" as you say, but I think there is something extra there that makes his tone and vowels even more distinguishable. I hear the German-ness in his voice for sure but again, I really like it.
I mean, we're all agree this is the studio version right? It is an amazing song by Scorpions for sure! But I would love to listen to this live and see the reaction for sure... Anyway, Im fan of the channel :)

You're the vocal expert, which I'm not. However, I have to point out (as someone who was born and raised in America and lived in Germany for two years) that he has a very distinct German accent in his English, which adds SO much to the depth and feeling of this song! This is a trait that few American vocalists can replicate. Klaus has a rare gift that is vastly underestimated!

Thanks for reviewing this one! Came of age listening to these guys in high school. I have seen these guys several times over the years going all the way back to 1980...wow, I'm getting old. Their live performances were always off the charts; age catches all of us but Klaus has kept his voice in great shape. One of the all-time great rock bands!

Klaus is top notch always
Keep in mind, that Klaus is a native German Speaker. You can hear it in his vocals, especially "Rot" you like a hurricane. Still love the Scorps. Best concert I've ever been to.
Millions of rock fans thank God that the Scorpions broke worldwide for German in the pre-Internet days. These days this kind of talent can get exposure. In the 70"s we could have missed this genius. I don't even like to think about all the other talent we did miss because it could never be heard or seen.

Love The Scorpions. They really took off in the 80’s, during a time filled with crappy big haired, glam metal bands. Their music really stood out among the other groups of the time. While bands like poison, were singing about soulless superficial crap, like parting and going to strip clubs, The Scorpions were definitely more soulful and thought provoking.
