  • This is not okay...it's awesome!! I completely ignored the "emo" era, as I had my head stuck up my on arse during that time. I've had a look at this song recently as it seems to have been extremely popular and I wanted to know why. Now I know! I imagine many of you may disagree with me as "emo" and bands like My Chemical Romance get a bad wrap. What do you think? Is it a decent or even great rock song? Or do you dismiss it as "emo trash"? Tell to me.

Hello Justin, gotta admit, I 'hated' them when they first 'appeared', being into 90's grunge/rock, in my teenage years, that stuck, and nothing else would do, but as I've advanced in age, I now think they're rather good, heading off to Milton Keynes to see them tomo. Just as a small point, a lot of bands rejected the "emo" label because emo was already a well established genre in the 80s and 90s and it sounded/looked nothing like this. The term was then reused for that hot topic movement with dramatic pop punk and eye liner. So between the people using the term emo for bands like rites of spring and drive like jehu and others using it just to mean the kids who dyed their hair bright colors, no band felt they should be called "emo" at the time.

Luckily we've managed to see Justin a couple of times over the years, at Looe Music Festival and Perranporth, a big thank you for venturing so far West. When in 2020 when MCR decided to get back together and were booked to play the Eden Sessions in Cornwall we jumped at the chance to get tickets. MCR is one of those bands that I think completely surpassed all their contemporaries in that era and transcended being just another mainstream pop punk/emo outfit. If you’re looking to dive deeper into the emo subculture, I would highly recommend checking out the genre’s roots in the 90s with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Built to Spill, and probably the one that’s still most important today, American Football. There’s been several so-called “waves” of emo and the mainstream take on the genre is just one of those. Emo is still around today as it saw a revival in the late 2000s and 2010s with heavy inspiration from its early days, but this time with a more math rock inspired approach. More recent emo bands I suggest you check out are Modern Baseball, Joyce Manor, Tiny Moving Parts, and Hot Mulligan.

MCR was a victim finding success too late in life for the genre they were in. Gerard Way was around 30 when they blew up so it was already kind of awkward to be writing songs for emo kids (not that adults weren't loving them too). If you haven't already check out the song "Rōnin" by Ibaraki. It was released earlier this year and Gerard Way is actually belting out some pretty impressive black metal lyrics. Mineral is one of my faves. Power of Failing is an incredibly powerful 'Emotional' album.
To me the term EMO was completely upended around the time Hot Topic became popular. "ScrEMo" had an effect on it too, certainly for that long black hair over your eyes asthetic. That did not exist prior in 'Emo', and really is more of a lazier Goth look in my eyes. Black Hoodies, jeans, everyone with same exact haircuts (Posers?) instead of dark Period clothing, etc.
Being Gen X, and growing up in the D.C. area enthralled by Dischord Records and the punk/hardcore scene (was myself in a band that recorded at Inner Ear Studios), my perspective might be different than some. To me Emo roots are Embrace, Rites of Spring, and few other Dischord bands, were doing similar. Then the Midwest revival stuff which is my favorite era (Mineral, Cap n' Jazz, etc). Of course the term EMO was created specifically describing tan Mackaye's band "Embrace" (which they all hated the term Emo/EmoCore, "Emotional Hardcore"). I guess after Minor Threat, Embrace was quite a departure and strange sound to many.

At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, My Chem -- almost none of these bands sound the same but are still defined as 'emo') and more had to do with the fan culture surrounding it. I agree that My Chem sounds nothing like early emocore/midwest emo, they're way too metal-based for that, but the fans were (and still are) so-called emos and thus My Chem is very much 'emo,' albeit a different meaning of the genre :)

I adored my chemical romance as a teenager(I still do)and I always remember they were like a band that was cool to hate and people were almost embarrassed to like them because of the ‘emo’ tag, which is a great shame because I believe underneath all the black clothes and eyeliner are 2 of the best rock albums of the 00’s in three cheers for sweet revenge and black parade. It’s funny to see that they’ve suddenly gained this great appreciation after all these years.I think a lot more people were fans, they were just too afraid to admit it.

That was definitely a big part of it, at least for me. I saw the video for 'I'm Not OK' when it came out, when I was 11. I was blown away as I had never heard a band sound like that, or even looked like that. But I eventually got into Metal and a lot of Metalheads at the time hated MCR, it really sticks with you as an impressionable teenager trying to fit in so I got pressured out of liking them. By the time I came back around to them they had broken up, but seeing them live a couple of weeks ago really felt like a way to make up for lost time and to reconcile with my younger self.

When they played Reading in 2011, Brian May came out to play guitar with them for the Black Parade and you can tell how much fun everyone was having. You can see how much they all look up to him, so it was really cool to hear you pick up on his influence on first listen.

"Proper rock band"...that phrase reminds me of a concert I went to when Chris Cornell was fronting Rage minus Zach...Audioslave...the venue was an arena in the Phoenix, AZ area...had a bunch of chairs...and the crowd was just sitting down like a group of people that once were young, but found themselves a little older now working the day job grind...these guys were just plowing away rocking that place, but the crowd, man...so at one point Chris said kinda scoldingly "You people are at a rock show...stand up and rock proper" or something close to that...and I was all "W..wha?....BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!"....still funny to me...I'm 60 in a cover band, and they want to practice all quiet low volume...and in my head I'm like..."wow, you guys...I don't want to just kind of hear it...I want to feel it..."...tough being an older guy in an older band yet still love and want to play at young volume...

I was graduating from a Moscow highschool in the early 2000s, being completely into the stagnating (at that time) "Nu Metal" genre with a mix of whatever was hot according to NME (they just started publishing the Russian version around that time, it didn't last), of course, at the time I viewed The Darkness as a joke\parody... It took me years to fully appreciate what you were doing and once I saw some of your live footage I started respecting you a lot. Now that I've been following you here, that level of respect grew even more, since you go into all the technical aspects from a standpoint of an actual accomplished musician.

I admit, when they first released Danger Days I wasn't a huge fan of it because I'd come to expect Black Parade and Three Cheers, etc. But as I got older and gained some more perspective, musical and otherwise, it grew on me, so I get completely skipping an "era" and coming back later and finding a new love for it. My chemical romance were one of those bands that were overplayed when I was a teenager. I think for me they were a band that became more of a fad at the time, with the amount they were played and advertised, and how many people liked them, which expanded the amount I had to listen to them. Hearing them now is quite refreshing, but I think no matter how good a band or artist is, if they're played to death and overly marketed, it can tarnish your view, and make you irritated for having to listen to them over and over again. They were a good band, but I think their massive success at the time made me a bit sick of hearing them. You still get it now with songs that are played constantly on the radio. It doesn't matter if it's a good song, if you're forced to listen to it again and again then its success can be its downfall.

Also, i can't listen to some of the Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, or Europe stuff anymore. Those i listened to on purpose, but i overplayed it, so even when i put one of their songs on now, they just fade into the background.

It’s funny/unfortunate that pop-punk has pretty much fully replaced an older and very different genre of music in the public consciousness as “emo”.
When I think of emo, back in its original form, I think of bands like American Football. Heck, I’ve even seen Modest Mouse get labeled as “Emo” in my time. I think of skinny Midwestern farm kids circa 2002 wearing plaid and playing intricate, repetitive arpeggios on alternate-tuned Fender Telecasters. I think of bands with a very heavy “Automatic”-era REM influence.
The labeling of bands like MCR and Hawthorne Heights/etc as “Emo” started initially as a pejorative comparison to that genre of “soft, sad boy music”, and then once they broke huge on MTV the label stuck. But the two Emos really sound nothing alike.
“Real” emo or “Midwestern Emo” or “original Emo” got sucked into the genre of “indie rock”, where it comfortably lives today, admittedly with way less monetary success.
Also going to put a big plug in for the band Pinegrove, if you want to hear young people playing that style of music (or music strongly influenced by it) today.

the original "emo" was just "emotional hardcore" (Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, Cap'n Jazz etc), it wasn't the sad boy combover hot topic caricature that got labeled as "emo" in the 2000s. Kind of how "goth" went from The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees & Bauhaus to... My Chemical Romance and hot topic. The first MCR album was actually pretty great for spooky themed pop punk but they fell off after that (for me). But still, not emo, not goth.

We all know the real reason why 'emo' bands like MCR were derided despite their very real musical chops and deep pool of influences: teenage girls liked them, and nothing a teenage girl likes could possibly be good. 😑
I'm not saying every artefact of late 2000s teenage girl culture is secretly a disrespected masterpiece; those Twilight movies really are terrible, and many of the lower-rung pop punk bands like The Academy Is... are rightfully forgotten. But some of these artefacts (like MCR) deserve critical reappraisal, and the teenage girls who went screaming to their concerts deserve cred as genuinely good tastemakers.

I thought it was kinda the continuation of mainstream co- opting of 90s Grrl Power subpop etc... but I wasn't part of it, so this is a view from outside of it, not within, mind.

When I was in high school, I was really into this album by My Chemical Romance (three cheers for sweet revenge) as well as permission to land by the Darkness. I got into both I think in the same exact year, actually.

People just assume MCR makes depressing lifeless emo rock, but people need to give them a chance, they have such an amazing talent as a group and each one of them is so incredible at their own individual instrument, Let alone Gerad's knack for creating incredible hooks, its all so finely tuned.

I remember watching this video at 5am on VH1 when I was about 13 and it struck such a chord both musically and visually, I knew I had to get the album. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was one of the most formative albums of my youth and now as a 30 year old I finally get to see them this weekend in Vegas!
Really glad you enjoy them, Justin. Also, love your channel. It's gotten me listening to The Darkness again and checking out your more recent stuff.
