Replace 2007 Hyundai Sonata Front and Rear Exterior Door Handles

  • I replaced the driver's rear and the passenger's front door handles. Don't exactly know why, but two handles broke with in a couple weeks of each other. Purchased the replacement handles on e-bay for a lot less than buying at the Hyundai dealer. I didn't paint the handles because they were black and looked ok with my gray Sonata.

    Another youtuber just used a thin piece of cardboard folded into a U shape. This was done for the front door, because as you pointed out accessing the rear bolt is far deeper. I found that out when replacing the rear door handle. Even with a magnetic hex driver, I still managed to lose the bolt and had to remove the inner door cover .. a 5 minute job that turned into about 2 hours. I really like the PVC tube idea. Brilliant!

    Nice vid i just replaced 2 handles. However that pipe concept is not necessary. You just need to push on this 8mm screw and replace the handle while holding/pushing the screw so it doesnt go down. Wrench socket needs to be ducktaped for safety. Thx.

    Thanks. My wife painted and clear coated the door handle to match. Since this was the front passenger door, I didn’t need an extension. Just used the driver with an 8mm socket. Used a small magnet between the driver and the socket and the replacement took a couple minutes. The rear doors require an extension for the ratchet. I have an 09 with 234,000 miles and all the handles except for the driver’s have been replaced. This was a helpful refresher video for me.

    Also, it seems like once one plastic part breaks in this car, all of them do in rapid succession. Cheap plastic, I guess. Both driver side handles, various interior components, and the plastic part that attaches the cable for the door elevator mechanisms for the two rear windows all broke within a month or two of each other.

      Glad it helped. I wish I could remember the guy whose video I watched where I got the idea...so, I could give him credit. It's sure a lot easier than accidentally losing the bolt down into the door. Before I put the PVC in, I was trying to figure out what size the socket was, and I knocked it off the extension when pulling it out...my door has a socket in it now. I've learned my lesson. When I now have to put a socket deep into something, I tape it to the extension so it can't come off.

      Hello. On my car, the gaskets were already on the door. They do not come with a new handle. I mentioned not to lose them because they can fall off, which one of mind did. I would check to see if they are still on the door. If not, and it was me, I probably would put the new handle on without worrying about it just to be able to open the door. They probably are there to help seat the handle and keep the weather from getting in behind the handle. You could check with Hyundai or on e-bay to see if any are available. Hope that this helps.

    • @bestgirlsdad
      @bestgirlsdad  Před 2 lety

      Hi Justin. I'm not sure if the bolts are ferrous or not. That is a good question. A couple weeks ago, TW made this comment:
      "Nice vid i just replaced 2 handles. However that pipe concept is not necessary. You just need to push on this 8mm screw and replace the handle while holding/pushing the screw so it doesn't go down. Wrench socket needs to be ducktaped for safety. Thx."
      This is a good idea. I sure agree with taping the socket to the extension. I lost one socket down in the door as I knocked it off the extension pulling it out.
      Also, I read a comment on another video like mine where the person said that you could unscrew the bolt just enough to get the handle free. The bolt actually doesn't need to be fully screwed out, and will stay in place when you take the handle off. I can't confirm this, but sounds logical.

      My first try at this, I lost the nut too. I went to a salvage yard and got one off a wrecked Sonata. Hope that you have a blessed holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

      Yes. Seems like some are 10 mm and some 8 mm. Maybe it is just where the cars were manufactured? Thanks for the comment. Hope you have a blessed day.

    I can tell just by the way that plastic shit was designed it was designed to fail repeatedly !

    I'm going to have to do this. But I'm going to try to rig up something better than what they made to begin with instead of replacing it withthe same cheap, defective piece of plastic shit

      I was watching a Scotty Kilmer video about plastic parts. At the 2:40 mark, he talks about the cheap plastic door handles.

      @@bestgirlsdad it's not pretty. But I took baling wire and wrapped around the trigger on the inside and around the old door handles and just put them back in there. It's very simple to do and it has lasted now for about 3 weeks with no issues. This is one of the stupidest factory defects I've ever seen. We broke off three of them in a very short time and the 2010 Hyundai we got now only has 67,000 miles on it and had 55 when we got it.
