Someone just paid nearly £600,000 at auction… for a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500. This just blows our minds!
And it got us to thinking - why are 80s and 90s cars now increasing in value so quickly that they are eclipsing supercars and breaking auction records worldwide?
What makes these cars so special? So collectable? So valuable? And who are buying them for such extreme sums of money? And also, crucially, which cars are next?

I would like to add one last reason.The loss of soul and feeling in todays modern cars. I LOVE the analog experience in previous cars. I miss some of my collection, almost regret buying the 992GT3, find myself driving my old Gen 4 manual Golf Sport more than ever now. Love it!
You should chop that gt3 in for an r32 (mk 4 also) then and you'll be over the moon. Oh and none of that 4 door dsg shite either!

Exactly. I was just going to comment the same thing. I collect 90'ies cars, not because I coveted them at the time, but because modern cars suck! They are soulless smartphones on wheels. I hate capacitively coupled controls, anti-spin, lane correction, iPad like dashboards, loathe it!
I agree, even 90s cars considered mediocre at the time make for a much more engaging driving experience than modern cars

Not only is there a shortage, but some of these cars are now in the classic car category which raises the value. I've owned my 300zx twin turbo for over 20 years and I'm not letting her go.
Because people don't want to drive I-phones with tires! People are sick of 2.0 turbos and cars with more screens than an office full of computers.

I believe the scrappage scheme played a large part.
Many perfectly decent cars from the 80s and 90s were chopped in for new cars as owners got more via the government and manufacturers subsiding than that would selling privately

Dead right I managed a salvage yard around 2008 and we where overrun with loads of 80s goodies, but they all had to be scrapped? What a sin now eh!

I worked for LKQ in Canada...the car heaven program brought in 100's of cars that were far nicer than what I was currently driving. Dealers gave zero trade in on a 5 to 10 year old unit...selling privately might be hassle so they "donated" it.
We had a mint 85 Trans Am with the good engine ...Recaro interior...very low klms....the gentleman owner passed away his family merely junked it.
Under normal deals an employee even the owner could have snapped it up but under government rules the VIN was cancelled and it had to be crushed.
It made us all sick.
A mate bought an Escort Cossie back when it was new and shipped it over to Kuala Lumpur. Its still as it is when he bought it. Zero rust, never raced or crash.
Did took it out around Sepang and the old Batu 3 track on track days.
U guys can venture outside of Japan , Australia and New Zealand to find many of those 80s/90s are up for sale at an affordable local market price.
Any Commonwealth Nation or country that drives on the left side of the road is a gud start.
I remember around 2000 a local chap bought a mint rs500 for around 25k everyone thought he was insane how wrong they were.

Agree completely. Here in America the Fox Body Mustang, Gen 3 Camaros, Trans Am along with many others are hot right now. Heck even a pick up truck from the 80’s and 90’s are going for crazy money.
I currently have a 91 Mustang 5.0 5sp.
There are several other Fox body Fords that are pretty much like Mustang, but they are way cheaper to buy.

That’s because they are a lot less desirable. There are a couple examples out there, Thunderbird and Capri which I do like. But I’d take my 91 Mustang over either one of those.
One of my most memorable moments was driving a mate's Sierra Cosworth on a UK Freeway near London at 140mph in 1989 and recalling how all the dotted lines all of a sudden became one big long white line. As an Aussie I have never been able to relive that moment not just due to a lack of Cossies but also because our nannying country hates any driver going over 3mph anywhere. Little did we know at the time just how coveted that car would become but at the time, that car sure was the duck's nuts.

I think the 70’s 80’s and 90’s were a unique time for music, tv, films and cars … everything from that period was largely better than what came before and since… these things will only be more collectible so get them whilst you can, my tip is R129 SL500
Those decades are probably the peak with what we did without internet. I wonder what the peak of the internet age and maybe battery age would look like, it’s probably a few decades away as ev’s are still new in the mainstream sense and ai is also still new.

I’m Australian and I have my dream car from when I was a kid ( I’m 54). Holden made 502 homologated special’s of the then current Commodore . Fast forward 18 years and I managed to purchase one for $18500 now I’m told you need somewhere over $200k to get one which I think is totally insane for a mid 80’s family car.
Any Holdens or Fords made in Australia are going to go up in value once they reach certain age.
The reason I possibly could think of is because cars back then had unique character , now aerodynamics and strict safety features have made all cars basically the same.
You reminded me of a time when my cars regularly broke down. That doesn't happen any more.
A few cars I did like back in the day was Mitsubishi Starion, Porsche 924 Turbo & Porsche 911 Avalanche, Escort Mexico.
These cars are so rare.
That’s the most important two decades for car ownership, when you had summit most others could only dream about!
There is such a connection to cars from those Eras that the working classes from that long ago, now dictate appreciation as opposed to Depreciation!
Simples! It’s far more meaningful and has that special bond of Memories!
As a Millennial (one of the oldest Millennials, possibly even Gen X). I've started buying cars from the 2001-2004 era when I was 16-20 years old. They're cheap. They may always be cheap but either way I'm living my nostalgia now and if the market moves on them then great. 😎👌 If not doesn't matter I'm still enjoying myself.

I was born in 1972 so grew up around all the cars you mentioned in the vidoe. Yet I never had a poster of a Ford Sierra Cosworth on my wall. I had higher aspirations than that. To see one selling for 600k is just madness.

Imagine how underwhelmed the buyer would feel if they actually drove the thing (which I'm sure they won't)? 224bhp... less than a Honda s2000, which I suspect might even be a better drive.
Here in the USA, They were called a Mercur XR4Ti. I remember them being nice when new. Then when they were 5 years old being on a used car lot for a few thousand dollars.

I grew up in the eightties. So I've been there done it and got the tea shirt.but no cars they were not any better 40 years ago .if I could go back and put all the cars away I might have made some money
But i didnt I the Ford's I ran were very basic and rusted if they didn't get nicked first. I've lost hundreds of thousands just on depreciation alone so I won buy any expensive motors now
I currently run a mk1 AudiTT I find it good to look at . Drives great and if it died tomorrow I wouldn't loose sleep . That's my advice
I'm from the Y-gen and I'm obsessed with these cars. In 2016 I've bought Pontiac Trans Am from 95 for 4000 €. Now the value is closer to 15.000 € and rising. Corvettes are the next to be sold as hot stuff. In one year alone price for the ZL1 skyrocketted.

Bought my 87 trans am for 2500 USD. Now they're going for 10,000. So glad I bought it before gen x hit their midlife crises.

Very glad I'm part on Gen X. Have such fond memories of the period from the late 80's to the early 2000's. Bringing back some happy memories of my 1.9 205GTI. A great time for cars, music and TV.

A Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 went for £109k at the same auction. It had 10k on the clock.

Got an '87 car myself, and it is a dream to drive her around. New cars cushion all the feeling away so far it feels like doing it with ten rubbers layered over eachother. It's so bad you're barely even noticing driving around with broken parts.
Which 1987 car? I live in the USA, and plenty of 80s cars were well cushioned. There were cars like the Ford Crown Vic and Chevrolet Caprice.

I'm from Australia I'm born 1980 and Japanese Jdm 90s car prices have gone crazy here in the last 10 years. I've got a 1996 Nissan Skyline gtst 2 door manual turbo. Prices have tripled in the last 5-10 years

20 years ago I sold my low mileage Cosworth for £6.5K 😩😪 then replaced it with a 2 year old Focus Zetec 🙃
I've had so many 80's and 90's cars that would now be worth a lot of money it hurts but none hurt as much as selling the Cosworth does. Back then the insurance went through the roof, I darent leave it parked anywhere and had to run 2 cars driving to work and back in an old Vauxhall Belmont because the Cosworth would have got nicked from outside work for sure! I felt like buying a sticker saying my other car is a Cosworth but someone would have probably followed me home then stole it 😂
Ps the red XR3i you show on the video isn't a XR3i it's a RS Turbo but you're spot on with why the 80's and 90's stuff is making so much money now!

In the 80s all us kids had 70s cars, all my friends that bought eighties cars were so mad and wanted their old cars back , I kept mine

I bought my 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol new in 1993, $15,000 out the door and still drive it daily. No high-tech feel - good BS, just honest economical driving machine. I have been approached by potential buyers, but I am not interested. Thinking back, they could have kept on making both the Rover P5B and the 2000 forever! Greetings from a Brit residing in the USA.
I remember when they came out
My first car was the original Mk1 1169cc Honda Civic '73 which I bought for £45 (cheap because the big end had gone). Changed the engine and had some fun for a few years, but each m.o.t. would involve welding to the sills, the boot floor, the trumpets, inner wings, floor etc. so I eventually sold it for £75 after blowing my hard earned dosh on an glorious 6 cylinder, 4 speed, E21 323i....ahhh I loved that machine even though it regularly tried to kill me, wish I still had that one!
As part of Gen X retired at 42 fortunate enough to as you say hark back to my youth when all I could afford was a Y reg 1.0 Metro I have also gone thorough the sentimental stage with a MK2 golf Gti Subaru Impreza Sti Sierra Cosworth and Lancia Delta Intergrale all of which where sat on the drive hardly used and we’re shocking to drive compared to modern standards a Fiesta ST would beat all of them across country unless your buying one as an investment I wouldn’t bother….

I tend to think that the old timers are attracted to the vehicles of their times as has been said by many classic owners. "If this goes wrong , I can fix it myself, with spares I always carry". Lift the hood on a car today and it is difficult to identify which bit is the engine!

Many of us never learned anything other than computerized engines, and many don't care to know.
I feel so lucky to have read an article about how a heated wire MAF worked in a magazine. I knew I would be able to work in auto repair.
I was amazed a Nissan Sunny GTI-R sold for around £21k on a well know site. It was actually reduced and had only done 22,000 miles. This was the time of the Escort Cosworth, Mitsubishi EVO and Toyota Celica in the WRC. IMO whoever bought it has a cracking investment.
I was obsessed with Sunny GTi-R's and always wanted one. Didn't they require a LOT of maintenance and engine rebuilds?
I wouldn’t be surprised. The Mitsubishi EVO required servicing every 5,000 miles if I remember correctly so the GTi-R could well be the same. But being a Nissan you would think it would be good. Hope one day we both have one to find out.

Great piece that hits the spot! When I look back at my car history, most of what I've owned is now worth significantly more than I paid for them. Ford Fiesta Supersport I paid £2K for. Escort RS1600i - which most people still don't know what it is - a mere £4.5K. I never in my wildest dreams thought many decades later the money they would be reaching and as you say, no real end in sight.
Spot on. As an early retired Gen X with all the things you mention, I agree. I'd pay a lot for a mint mk1 Swift GTI, my first brand new car in 1987, or a perfect 85 Alfa GTV6 which I bought used at the time. I'm just glad I bagged an early F355 when I did.

When I bought my rust free low mileage GTV6 for $20K six years ago people said I was nuts. I don’t plan on selling it yet but I feel vindicated.

My favourite car has always been the Lancia Delta Integrale. 10 years ago I bought an 92’ EVO1 Verde York limited edition of said car. It set me back £23500. Needless to say, it was a good decision. Still have it. Accompanied by a 89’ Alfa Romeo 75 2.0 TS and a 76’ Fiat X1/9. 🇮🇹

Lots of nostalgia and people realizing that it might be better to buy a $10k-20k car with low miles from the 80s or 90s that will retain value than spend $50k + on a car that will diminish in value as soon as you take it off the lot.

It's not just high performance cars. Evrrything from the 80's and 90's in good nick is selling well. For people my age, 40 to 50, such cars are what we remember when we were younger and what we drool for. If not mistaken, it was in Greece, a Skoda Favorit with 30 or so miles on the clock sold for € 23,000.
Thats why i love my 986 Boxster. Takes me back to my childhood in the late 90s and early 2000s and looking at car magazines at the grocery store while my mom shopped, thinking how could i ever afford one. I couldn’t even afford the magazine.
Imagine the disappointment of some of these people paying astronomical prices for hot versions of mass produced rust buckets only to watch them rot away as we did in the 90’s….nostalgia can be expensive in more ways than one.
Not all of us Gen-X's are rich. Lost everything in 2016, recently bought my first car in 20 years, a Toyota 86. My dream car (Last car I had was a Honda CRX, loved it). Nostalgia kicks hard for every generation. We got the best part honestly, especially pop culture.
Another reason, why 80's and 90's cars are so popular now, is that they are exciting to drive. They are not perfect by any means, but to get the best out of it, you have to work and play with the car and that is so rewarding!

Agree with all the 3 points you listed. 🤔 I am wondering maybe the 4th (or a minor reason) is that the new new modern cars (say made after 2015) are all too digital, bulky and *artificial* so that drives people to look for something way back that is more pure and mechanical?

I just want the analog, interphase of a good lightweight car with great driving dynamics, a manual transmission and good horsepower to weight ratio. That right there is what the manufacturers no longer make.

My first car was an -84 RS Turbo. Absolutely loved that car. It let loose the front wheels when upshifting to 2nd gear and maxxed out at 220kph

A staggering video Damian. I had to watch it a couple of times to make sure my ears weren't deceiving me. Being in the Baby Boom Gen & an owner of an '85 Alfetta GTV6, you've given me hope, although I'm not expecting a value of £600k! Have you considered making a series on iconic '80's cars and comparing the driving experience to their modern day equivalent, if one exists? I expect there won't be much of a contest comparing outright performance, however that's not what it's all about.

This happened in the early '80s when e types and similar were 70-80k then the bubble burst and you could buy the same e type for under 20k
I’m 41 now and owned multiple RS Turbos and Cosworths over the years and sold my black 3 door Cosworth in 2009 for 9k and my Focus Rs Mk1 for 15k so you can imagine it’s a bit sore seeing the prices of these, I replaced them with a manual BMW E46 M3 coupe in Silver Grey which I still own and love, I see the prices are slowly creeping up on these now so hopefully it’s a future classic.
E46 m3 going up nicely but a cosworth Sierra or escort is worth a fortune more and we’re the same £ once
Well, E46 m3, is probably as good as it gets really. But the feeling you get in a Cosworth, you instant feel like a hooligan, eco drive impossible 😂
I was an auto/Diesel Technician before the service. I'm not surprised at all by this. The more late models and "Never Ever Worked" vehicles I worked on, the more apparent it became. Just like old music, well made vehicles can always be polished from time to time. Common sense won't replace a car every 2-3 years.
It's really interesting what's happening, isn't it? I live in America and I own a fully loaded 1998 Y87 Firebird that has a V6. The car is a garage queen and came from the factory with everything a Trans Am has, minus the V8 and front and rear clips. Just last week my insurance bumped the value of my car to $15k. That nearly double what I paid for it, in the summer of 2022.
I’m a gen X, back in 2006 I bought a 1990 BMW E31 850i. Had it for 16 years now, saw the prices drop to around 2011, then started picking up and they are fetching decent money these days. If you happen to have a CSi (1500 made) or an Alpina 5.0 (90 made) or 5.7 (57 made) you are sitting on a goldmine.
Only if you're able to afford the maintenance and upkeep which is substantial for these cars.

I'm 50 and miss the 80's and 90's ,life was far better, money went further and there was much less stress,I miss the good old days......sad thing is I used to own most fast fords back in the day then they got 'old' and naff,now look what's happening,wish I kept them😢

We have all done it usually to buy something else that we thought was better at the time. The car I regret selling from a financial perspective was a 1983 911SC Cabriolet, that was the first year they were made. Its now worth @ 4 times as much. I brought a 1975 Bentley which I still have.

@@jjefferyworboys8138oh boy! You clearly did not think that through very well. For the most part common garden Bentley or Rolls Royce are not appreciating collectible cars. Except the convertible or 2 door cars. Like American cars -4 door ones never really appreciated in value. Maybe hold steady at best.

I was in the room listening. Saw the car up close afterwards. There was a nasty little dent on the front metal cross bar above the bumper that had broken the paint and was about 1.5cm long. It looked like new damage, as in occurred during the Race Retro show. Also the windscreen of the car was delaminating on the passenger side. Hope the buyer is aware….
I bought my NSX almost 8 years ago to drive it. It was in my budget. If I choose to sell it on I believe it'll be a nightmare to sell. It's got higher miles and could do with tlc. But I love it. I'll only sell if I have no choice but to let it go.

We all agree: this Sierra Cosworth RS500 sold VERY well. According to me, this is not really pointing to a new trend, but rather to an exception, since the buyer is almost certainly not just a wealthy "car guy". And you seem very optimistic when it comes to a market that isn't all that large and very specific. Top-value collectibles get increasingly hard to sell, the reason being among others their very limited usability and staggering running costs (cf. 300 SL Gullwing, Ferrari 250 etc.) even here in Switzerland/Germany. There's no denying that we love those old divas, but aren't there better classics to call your own?
The trend existed well before this car.
You need a special expert to repair such cars, many of the cars listed here don't need so many specialists. They tend to be more reliable, and what you do need to order may be a few days away at an auto parts store.
Oh yes. That were good times. Friend of mine and I sat on the curbstone honing down the intake and exit of our 50cc cylinders and the local police guy - who knew us personally -stopped and asked what we are up to. We explained that we need to hone and polish the cylinders and he just said: but if, then do it right and smooth the edges! Then he said „drive safe“ and left us doing what we were doing!
These were good times, where reason still ruled over that shit what goes on today!

Viper & NSX is the nostalgic, iconic supercars of the 90s, especially in the US. The rest are just nostalgic on a lower level.
I'm a July 64 baby so pretty much relate to all these cars and have owned a few of them when they were cheap as chips..special place for the 300zx and mx5...proper little sportscars....

My Dad has a 1989 Alpine GTA Turbo, unfortunately the recent trend of 80s and 90s cars climbing in value has passed these by, which is tragic.

Very glad I got my mint original 1984 Porsche 928s guards red champagne interior back in 2015. It was my dream car from the time I saw them on the autobahn in Germany in the mid 80s. Always thought they were beautiful and loved the weird quirky pop up head lamps. Glad I got it before prices skyrocketed.
The best cars were built in the 90’s, everything after was too much and not of the same quality and feel. BMWs, Benz’s Porsches, Ferrari’s Hondas, Nissans, fords etc etc. All interesting cars that can be enjoyed without trying to lose your license or life. Golden era of cars indeed

@@rscholey85 There are plenty of people who want 'the latest, new thing' and who don't qualitatively examine the merits of new vs older designs. The majority of the car buying public are like that. It's the proper petrol heads who recognise the benefits of an analogue machine, and it's the successful, wealthy petrol heads who are driving the market knowing that modern performance cars don't offer the same experience, and performance cars as we know them are now finite in number, with politicians forcing the EV route to managing climate change.

Great video mate. I think there’s added appeal, beyond the nostalgia, because models stayed the same for years. You fell in love with the car through your childhood.
Think of the early Golf GTI… it may have been your bedroom wall poster throughout most of your teens. Now there’s a new/facelift GTI every 24-months virtually. So who’s adding the new models to their bucket list…
Older mechanical cars are also going to become increasingly valuable heirlooms, since most cars today are designed to be disposable. So it’s not just rare Ferrari’s it’s pretty much all rare OEM cars that are becoming an investment, whether they mean something to you or not.
Would love to get my hands on these they are worth the money old cars and trucks are built much better and are soiled last much longer than the newer ones 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Gen X here, first car in 1987 @ 17 was a Triumph Dolomite Sprint and friends had XR2, XR3i, Golf GTi, Cosworth etc so aye we 50 some things want speed+thrills but hey a good ST can cost 5G now so you don't need to break the bank.....or like me get an ST AND a Suzuki GSXR...bomb😎😎
Same over here on our side of the pond... And these domestic 80's & 90's cars were real turds as far as reliability, fit and finish. But the ones that have survived fetch a pretty penny.

As a Gen Xer myself this video was absolutely on the nail. I crave nostalgia to the point where it aches, especially seeing how things are in this day and age for our kids and grandkids. It was the first Gran Turismo game that ignited mine and many friends love of these Japanese sports cars and I then owned a limited edition Civic "Jordan" 1.6 VTi, then a DC2 Honda Integra Type R and after that it was just remapped diesels there afterwards. I now own a VW Scirocco which I think one day will become rarer and pricier due to their 10 year production period only. I want to try and keep it for as long as possible just to see.

Great topic guys. I bought a mint NSX 15 years ago for a sum that today seems daft. I’ll never sell it. That’s the other reason these 80’s cars are going up in value as so many are ending up in the hands of people who are unlikely to sell them again increasing their rarity.
They’re also the sweet spot of usable levels of performance whereas later cars are just a bit too fast for the road.
What did you pay, I remember looking on eBay £15/16k for early 1990s ones which I liked, they I guess we're over priced and only reason I didn't bother was no Garage, still non because drive wasn't wide enough,.my Fav car though, happy with all 3 Gen CRX but NSX was dream car, Ferrari 355 also but I like Reliability and Reasonable Service Costs😂 So Japanese cars
