Part 33 - Revealing Mystery Moulds I Found on Gumtree

- This is the series where I reveal what is inside these pottery moulds I found on Gumtree.
The story goes, I found a listing on gumtree for pottery stuff. When I arrived the seller said 'I have all these pottery moulds would you like them as well?' and I said 'why not'. On the way home, I had the brain child to do a social media video series revealing what each mould is.
The mystery is in the fact that I had no idea what I had said yes to, some of the moulds are labelled and easy to tell but some of them are a little more difficult. The beauty is that all of the plaster moulds surprise you no matter the presentation of labels, titles or identifiable surface inside.
So come join me as I dive into this series and share the mould fun. I would love to hear any information you may have on the moulds and to let me know any stories you have that the moulds remind you of in the comments.

Hi, Shelby, I watch your videos because I want to see what they are! And I love the way you paint them. I have been a certified ceramics instructor for over 40 years and still at the age of 75 am teaching. You were concerned about the chip out of the handle. I repair those by watering down molding plaster till a consistency of skim milk. I drip in a small drop at the time until it fills on. Most people don't realize that it is not like you've patched it. It all becomes one solid piece. Also the little pinholes in the back of the mold can be opened upand a tiny drop of plaster will fix that. In cleaning I would take those little nubs off. I had that same mold once upon a time and might even still have it. I have thousands and will never get to pour them all. One last thing. If you fire the pieces 1 cone higher you may be able to get rid of pinholes and milkiness. Usually works for me.

And yes I noticed that little nub one but didn’t mind it because it kind of looks like the bunny has a little back mole hehe! Yess I am not sure if it will fit in a refiring cycle but I have found also refiring clears up the milkiness! Sometimes because my little kiln, things in the top shelf don’t ventilate well for whatever reason so I end up randomly with one that didn’t fire properly! Rarely happens but thank you so much! You are incredible for sharing so much of your knowledge so generously! I am so grateful 💓

UPDATE! I retired to a higher temp and the cloudiness is gone WOOHOO! Thank you! Its so pretty! It will be for sale as normal now!
That is great advice! I’m a polymer clay artist and have several molds that are damaged, I’m going to take your repair advice to my next club meeting! I have plaster of paris, and I don’t know what plaster the professional molds are. Should I get the better plaster for the repairs?

Isn't that a super feeling? I've only started watching her (ok, ok, "binging her") in the past week or so & I've got one already. (Yeah I have way too many tchotchkes, how'd you know?) A tiny reclining frog. I's not like YOUR find, which is super cute & amazing, but I like my lil guy :)

My brother and I each painted one of these mugs at a pottery Cafe in December 1997! I was 7 and my brother was 3 years old. I still have them and they spark such warm memories. Your paint job is much better than ours 😅
I image that for the ages you were, you did a fine job, worthy of admiration. Making something with your own hands & creativity gets lots of proud-points on its own.
I made so many of these bunny mugs back in 1981! I was a kindergarten teacher and all of my students would receive one as a Christmas present. I wasn’t pouring back then but I had a great greenware supplier. Brings back such great memories. I really like the longer videos and watching all of your designing! Thank you for sharing!❤
They’re cute as a bunny! My favorite is the bunny with black overalls. I’m glad you were able to re-fire and eliminate the cloudiness. You got good advice there. When you were painting, I noticed right away the mushroom bunny would match your mushroom overalls, and the blue bunny is summery sweet. But in the end, you’re no bunny until some bunny loves you. 🐇🐇🐇

Oh thank you so much! Sometimes I worry i do too much of the same thing but I feel like when the mould is different it changes up how I adapt my style onto each piece!

I just started watching your channel and was surprised to noticed that the mold from this post was from Fresno California which is close to me.
It may have came from a place called Duncan Ceramics which was founded in 1946 and was a big leader in the ceramics community during the 70s. They are still open to this day.
Could you do a video explaining the kiln and how you use it/temperatures, safety precautions, all the different firings (green, bisque, and glaze) how much they cost, etc! Love the content, keep up the good work! ❤️

Fabulous idea! Soooo the reason I have put off doing this is because all the kilns are different! Each kiln has different ways of using it, kind of like a coffee machine. They all kind of work different so I don't want it to be a gospel video for all kilns. The other thing is safety precautions are all different everywhere too! I can do a generalised idea video though if thats still of interest?

I was watching Firestarter, and just under an hour in, Charlie (Drew Barrymore) is brought a cup of cocoa in this very same mug. I recognized it right away and searched through your videos until I found the right one.
As a child I took ceramics classes. We would pick a bisque piece to paint. I remember the teacher having this one. I never painted it. I did paint a trinket box for Easter that was a bunny sleeping in an egg. This reminded me of the fun I had painting these up.
OMG! I made that exact mug in a ceramics class at Ft Benjamin Harrison in Indiana in 1987. 😃

omigosh, i have a mug of that exact mold. my mom made it for me when i was a kid. i still have it to this day. it is adorable. i use it to keep my pens in it

I had one of these mugs when I was a little girl 🤗 Can’t remember if I did the glazing on it or my mother, but I loved it ❤️ And I had a ceramic Easter egg box that I’d display it with on my dresser 😊

I had overalls when I was a toddler that were pink with tiny carrots on them! There's a picture of me in them with my carrot slippers on. These are so cute!

I love this piece! It's just so darn cute! And you're right, the handle DOES look like an ear and it's very functional! I love it, but also I'm sad that it means you can't use the carrot handle. Oh well, perhaps there's another rabbit in there somewhere you can still use the carrot handle on.
