Uruguay is a welcoming country that offers a peaceful, genuinely laid-back culture that is notably distant from the world's current conflicts and troubles. Uruguayans are an inclusive, conversational and happy people. We were delighted that Montevideo, Uruguay's capital city boasts a relaxed atmosphere, is affordable and also has a thriving artistic community. With bountiful natural resources and a high quality of life, it's no wonder this country is also a popular destination for expatriates and digital nomads.

Uruguay is one of the safest countries in South America (check the world peace index), we did not have any problems. We went during the off-season so accommodations and car rental were moderately priced. Renting a car from Hertz was easy. Montevideo is a beautiful and unique city, we enjoyed the architecture, flea markets, street art and the leisurely pace of life. We spent 1 week in Montevideo and 3 weeks exploring the rest of the country in our rental car, staying at hostels along the way.

Awesome! Yeah, I've done the research for official stats, but lots of blogs have tourists saying otherwise. I was taking all I read with a grain of salt and thinking, "honestly, how much more dangerous could it be than NYC or Chicago or Los Angeles (where I currently live)!"
Lovely to hear all of these things. I'll be going during their winter (mid-June to mid-July), so hopefully I'll miss a lot of the normal tourist buzz. Thanks for your responses!!! :)

Look in CZcams for Daniel Viglietti, (second song A desalambrar) but there are other uruguayan singers such as Los Olimareños (find the song La niña de Guatemala, Adios Mi Salto, Angelitos Negros, A Don José, etc), Alfredo Ziarrosa is another one, and I forgot the name of other singers that I like. This is folklore. There are also very good Argentinian ones, like Jorge Cafrune among many others.

rasoros montevideo (the capital of uruguay) has got a lot of neightborhoods of couse, it depends of the time of the day or where you at. you can get robbed at plain daylight if you are alone and distracted, obiously your chances to get robbed increases at midnight but as i said, the neightborhood you get at is what defines if you are going to get robbed or not. but apart from that the capital is very peaceful and the rest of the country is fine
