      XR400R is also really interesting! I think a better oilpump design what i saw.
      Hopefully you will don't need this kind of big rebuild action, but if you do it's a lot of fun!

    I’ve got an 85 XL600R that I recently bought, got it running after cleaning carbs, new plugs and oil. I’m having issues with the bike spitting oil from the tailpipe, do you think that’s likely valve seals or rings? I was hoping it would clear up but if not I’m definitely checking out the rest of ur vids if I have to tackle taking the top end apart. I can’t wait go get this thing road worthy, great work man!

      Thanks Omar, compressiontest perhaps first? Of leakofftest? if you do a leakoftest and air is heared from the valvecover(screw cap of) than you loose air through the valveguides.
      taking the head is a good idea, the only thing is you have to tilt the engine in the frame to get the rockercover off.
      Tip: replace spanner and chain when you do, if you find helicoils replace them with long ones.
      Good luck!

    Hi man, great and super informative video! quick question, I have recently picked up a 1994 NX650 and had to change the loose cam chain tensioner, I am getting a new cam cover gasket. the manual shows to use the on without the cut-out at the top, but you show yourself at (7:48) using a alternate one with a cut-out, is it better flowing or just a preference thing? thanks for your help!! :)

    thanks for this great video man, it is much appreciated as I just purchased another 85 XR600 r and have motor to go through, doing a complete rebuild, any recommendations for part I may need, the cylinder looks good but was left out in weather wit top head removed, so piston rusted in there

    • @cjsgarage3662
      @cjsgarage3662  Před 3 lety +2

      Remove rust with "Scotch brite" , but do it outside. The scotschbrite dust will ruin every bearing in sight in your mancave, also rinse very good before you actually install the part.
      But when the rust is removed, i think you should give it a good handhone like video nr 6, and then measure what the result is. If the space between piston and cylinder is too big better bring it to an engine shop to let them bore/hone it to an new oversized piston.
      Good luck!

    This is a GREAT series that i am going to need. Bought a 87 XR600R that didnt run 1.5yrs ago - rebuilt carbs and got it running but not right. Found out after its an XR frame with an 87 XL600R motor. I split the case and am slowly acquiring the parts to reassemble, some new (rod, piston, etc) and some used like trans gears. Rod bearing was sticking bad, going to have that rebuilt and bored to 102.3mm. Got most parts but i have a question i hope you can answer - the decomp assembly in the head - mine was pretty loose - how tight should that be when trying to rotate it by hand? when i got it, it would not return on its own. thanks for the series!

    • @cjsgarage3662
      @cjsgarage3662  Před 3 lety

      Hello Tom, good to hear you have found yourself a nice bike! My cable was too tight, so when i turned left sharp the engine stalled (decompr activated without knowing) so i loosend it.
      For how tight it should be, i can turn i by hand and i can push the rocker in a bit. But it should return automaticaly by the spring! Look at nr3 in the drawing

      @@cjsgarage3662 thanks! It was not returning on its own and had lots of play. I am assuming it was the spring or it was installed incorrectly. Should the spring have enough tension to return the decomp lever on the handlebar. Squeeze mine and it just stayed where you left it 😜

    • @cjsgarage3662
      @cjsgarage3662  Před 3 lety

      @@tomphillips2473 It should definately return! Deconnect the cable from the decompr arm on the cylinderhead. Just feel how it moves on it's own. It could be that it's installed the wrong way. Bit of work, but it would be good to take the cylinderheadcover off to get a look at all the stuff inside. HOw the oilbearing looks like etc, all the rockers. Gives you a good view how the state is. But first take the cable off, see how it moves on its own. If its fine, hava a look at the cable itself!

    Does somebody know, why i can't thighten the 2 bolts properly at 5:10 Min? The motor is in the bike so i tried first gear + rear brake, also holding the bolt with which you can turn the crankshaft didn't work. The camshaft keeps turning while trying to thighten the screws. The camshaft was properly aligned on Installation (now it might not aligne anymore). The bolts are mounted on the opposite side than in the video. When turning the motor over everything works fine :/

      ah, differetn type of cam. You have the automatic decrompressioner offcourse.
      But....... take the flywheel cap off. Put a socket on it, perhapsyou can now tighten the bolts while holding the flywheel.
      Take note if the sprocket is still on time while TDC, the bolts are with locktite at the right torque for your bike, and like you did always turn by hand just in case.
