What If Rhaenyra Married a Lannister? (House Of The Dragon)

  • In her younger years as the realm's delight Rhaenyra had many contenders for her hand when she came of age. Perhaps one of the most interesting matches they could have been made for her came from Casterly Rock. Though she refused them I can't help but wonder what could have happened had the dragon and lion came together all those years ago.

The idea of Jason standing against his wife is ridiculous. No matter how proud, any Lord is, none will give up the opportunity to become father of the next King, especially when that next king and his siblings are going to own dragons.
When Rhaenerya ascends the throne he could just remain in Castely rock with the rest of his children and let Rhaenerya and their heir be at Kingslanding. Sure, he will push for her heir to bear the Lannister name and would be rejected, but no matter how you look at it, marrying Rhaenerya is a win win for him.

    @user-ti5cw1ug6l Před 21 dnem +5

Laenor is a would-be candidate for King of Westeros himself and a battle hardened dragon rider. The Velaryons are richer, have dragons, AND have a claim to the throne through Rhaenys that she can merge with through marriage. Rhaenyra is a rival claimant to the throne so the later two things are so much more important for her. Her opponent is Aegon, the most senior direct male line heir of House Targaryen who already commands 4 dragons between himself and his siblings alone. Precedent/common law showed that the crown passed through the male line, with Jaehaerys I over Aerea and Viserys I over Rhaenys, so it's already been upheld twice over. In the medieval setting, especially without codified law, this is all the more important because it's the only existing framework. Jason might have all the money in the world but it wouldn't equal a stronger hereditary claim in the eyes of the realm.
Also, if Jason did marry Rhaenyra the most valuable thing he's really won is male line Lannisters inheriting the throne. In other words, a Lannister dynasty. If deep in his heart he really thought Rhaenyra's brothers and Daemon had a better claim to the throne he would just favor them being killed, or put into the several orders that require celibacy (Maester, septon, King's Guard, Night's Watch etc.).

  • @originalgal76

If she did i could guess daemon would still marry laena and still have 2 daughters with her and marry baela to aegon, uniting 3/4 targaryen branches and all dragons except syrax and her clutch but that won't stop the ambitions of rhaenyra and the lannisters and once viserys dies they will declare war.
Most the great houses will side with aegon, and besides that and the dragons they would have the velaryon and redwyne fleets. With the greyjoys also likely to tag in.
House lannister would have the fate of the reynes of castamere

How would the story change with Lyris being on her side. Would Rhaenyra be willing to give him his “privilege” in exchange for his spy master ability’s
I can see this actually happening because as you said in 6:16 Rhaenyra want to not be a piece in another persons game and if Lyris can convince her he can ensure this then I can see her putting up with Lyris and giving him his “privilege” in exchange for him making sure she will not be a piece in someone else’s game

Daeron marries the Princess Aliandra of Dorne
Aegon's daughter, if he has one, betrothed to Lyonel Tyrell

Honestly it seemed like it was written to give the Blacks such better odds on purpose. Like we saw how politically intelligent Otto was, there would be NO WAY he'd not take advantage to make more connections, so Martin had to have it so that Viserys sabotaged them in the book at least.

@@Pouncealot2023 That's one instance though and it wasn't like they DIDN'T react (see the whole 'Blood and Cheese' incident), but the fact that ALL of the connections made for the Green children were so underwhelming and seemed to go against how pragmatic and politically savvy Otto was makes no sense. Otto had multiple years to scheme, manipulate, and plot out the best marriages for the Greens to get the most support (something their plan and futures depended on) but he just... didn't? The same with him not taking advantage of the distrust and resentment the Vale had for Daemon to secure support there, especially after Laenor's death. It seemed like such a massive oversight for YEARS that makes no sense. The only reason why they wouldn't have gotten advantageous marriages is because George R. R. Martin didn't want to give the Greens more support and make things more complicated. The Blacks having as much support as they did makes no sense given the political landscape of Westeros along with the lack of long-term planning on the Greens' part despite everything pointing to that being out of character for them, making it seem like blatant favouritism for the Blacks on the writer's part.

Okay so I have a lot to say. First off, Rhaenyra not wanting to get married, while simultaneously being worried about being replaced by Aegon. Literally makes no sense at all. This is a feudal society, where birthright inheritance is literally everything. Rhaenyra's reasoning for why she doesn't wish to get married, makes no sense. She has to take a husband & have children to secure her hold on power & the next line of succession to throne. Assuming Vhagar still dies then not much would change tbh if he manages to make it back to KL he’d die in the Battle of the Kingsroad.
If he makes it to Harrenhall eventually the blacks would find out and he’d die in a siege because I don’t see him bending the knee to Aegon III.

What if Viserys only have daughters with Alicent?
What if Jace & Helaena married?
What if Viserys had Aegon II married Rhaenyra *After* Laenor’s death?
What if Rhaenyra was like Jaehaerys The Conciliator?
What if Viserys made Daemon Hand Of The King after Otto’s dismissed/Lyonel’s death?
What if Aegon-III lived longer and made his Daughter Daena hair after the death of his sons?

If you wish to get more into GoT fanfiction territory, knowing these are probably too much but
What if all Old Valerian houses had 'beasts', the Targaryens have Dragons the Valaryon have actual Sea Horses like Aquamans' or something and the Celtigar has large crabs, imagine how different Aegon's Conquest would be and assuming everything else goes the same Laenor & Laena being both Dragon & Sea Horse riders

Jason Lannister was a douchebag. No way could Rhaenyra have put up with him for long.

I don’t agree anyone as proud as Rhaenyra would allow any Lannister to change her red three head dragon on black. Lannister consort would be made to accept same conditions as the sea snake did for laenor. Dragon’s will rule.

Viserys forced his daughter to marry the worse possible match ever. Why did the small council believe the gayest man ever would give the iron throne heirs
