- It's time to see if the Tiger 900 Rally Pro can handle the sand...although it's more a question of whether I can handle the 900 Rally Pro in the sand...in the desert... who is going to be the weakest link? It's time to head into the desert for 1000 Dunas rally... this video is the start of the 1000 Dunas desert rally experience... and if I finish I will become the first female to ever finish the race on a standard adventure bike. I had my chain snapped on the highway doing 130 km/h on my 1190 Adventure R, it hit the Touratech case rack, and smashed a hole in the engine casing and ripped the clutch pump out. Game over... for the bike, luckily it didn't hit my leg :) My 2016 Superduke SE has some metal guide on the inside of the frame just before the pinion gear to prevent this.
Nowadays, on newer models, KTM doesn't mount this protection anymore on their frames... weird... anyways, lessons learned, I replace chain and sprockets every 10K kilometers.
Nice video coverage and very brave to try this on such heavy bike, I loved watching this, makes me want to ride off-road again.

Apart from the fact that my old bones would not manage that kind of trip any more - half the time I’d probably forget or not have the nerve to switch on the camera when things got tricky!

Love Maroc. Rode a hired 650 GS in Marrakesh and rode all around Maroc. Some of the pistes were definitely sketchy! Very enjoyable video.

The navigation thing and all the road books is something that really puts me off. It has got to be mentally exhausting.
It 100% is. It's 100% engagement of the whole body and whole mind. Super satisfying but yeah.. you're TIRED at the end!!

Great series. Pretty rare/unlucky to have a chain failure these days especially on the road. Don't think I even carried a chain tool on my 10,000 mile tour of South America.

@@TheGirlOnABike Did you ever figure out, or get advice from the support team mechanics, as to exactly why that chain snapped. I am quite certain a chain of that specification wouldn't just snap, unless there was a good reason.....chain tension possibly? It would have been unusual even on a well used worn out chain so I am very curious as to what the preventative diagnosis is for your future considerations. I mean realistically it would be wise to get to the bottom of that failure to prevent being dead in the water in the middle of nowhere, in the future.
Rare......you are correct. Chains don't break unless there is a reason for that failure....I don't see any discussion on that point, but I suspect the chain tension was too tight, so eventually something had to give with all that weight! I wouldn't put it down to bad luck, something went wrong mechanically, and that would be human cause is my guess.....the luck is that they were near a mechanic and not in the middle of the desert.

On a sidenote for later - that DJI Osmo Action 3, you must have been riding with that for almost as long as it has been out (maybe even had it a while before official release?). How's that turned out?

Hi Vanessa. Great video. I have such a beast and take it trail riding here in Portugal. It’s a great all rounder. I love it. When riding in sand what tyre pressures did you run on? Did you use ‘off-road’ or ‘off-road pro’ mode?
I was in off road pro always. Tyres I ran them super high 42 and 38 because I was running tubeless. And I did not want to risk of getting a puncture. So higher pressure at risk. It would’ve made dividing harder but worth it.
@@TheGirlOnABike Thanks. I have only tried the pro mode once on a dirt track. Scared me to death 😂 Note to self - face the fear and have a blast. There are so many opinions about tyre pressure. I always use standard street pressure although not been through soft sand. It good to know it worked for you. I must try one day. Live Long - Ride On!

Wow. Tricky stuff! The problem presumably with using mileage (or is that Kilometerage?) for directions is that if you mess it up it's all wrong. When you say you reset it, do you mean you can reset to a set figure on the phone, or does it go back to zero?
yeah great point, if you get lost you have to work out where you were last 100% sure you were correct, go back and then reset your km and have another go. Certainly no google to help you! I have a how to road book nav video coming out on Sunday so would recommend watching for more of the background on how it works. It's in KM no miles
Like driving a rally car but with 2 less wheels and the driver and navigator being the same person. It looks so much more intense as a rider.

it's a open to all event and is probably one of the cheapest desert rally raid opportunities out there. It's not a race being a raid but gives you the vibe. The lower price does come with risks such as no helicopter recovery [if you're bad in the desert that could be life changing] and the organisation is not quite to the level of the bigger desert rallies but for the price it's certainly an options. hehe thanks. I train a lot and have to manage a lot of pain in my hip, but the mental pain of giving in would be worse than the physical so I fight on. For now I can manage it, time will see hehe

Well can it? I doubt it is the best choice for this kind of thing....and those boxes on the side for luggage are basically dangerous...on so many levels....sooner or later the "adv" world will learn this most basic of facts....
Yip it can. I made the finish. Yey. I definitely took the hard panniers off though. There's a video show other modifications I made to turn it into a rally bike

That the challenge, and given she's already entered a few rallies on lighter bikes it adds something new to the content. Don't forget KTM themselves said "...450cc motorcycles, which are unthinkably unsuitable for use in long distance rallies." Now imagine the 'fun' riding the 450 bike from the UK to first get the rally. It can be done, but is best done slowly if you want to take any enjoyment from it.
I guess I like a challenge and it's something different and fun to try. I enjoy the unknown of whether I'll make it too hehe
