    Hi from Mexico! Thanks once again Matt for another very informative video!

  • @MikeEckman

    This is a good video. The only thing I do differently myself is that after inserting the film into the camera, I like to fully advance the film with the bottom still off so that I can see the film transport out of the cassette and onto the take up spool. This eliminates the need to take off the lens, set the shutter to B and look through the curtains for the film because if at that point, it's not advancing, you have to open the camera back up again.
    Also, it's worth noting that not only is this process the same on all bottom loading Leicas, its also the same on all bottom loading copies by Canon, Nicca, Leotax, Zorki, FED, Reid, Kardon, and others.

      Thank you Mike. Since this video I’ve started loaded film uncut and it works fine. I watch the shutter release button rotate with the black dot on and the film rewind button rotate. Yes thanks I use this for my Leica iii clones too. Sorry I didn’t make that clear and I appreciate you noting it. (I wrote an article on this for Patreon only yesterday actually so good timing!) :)

      ..I don’t look through the camera now either, just drop the film in say the same as with a M then use the dials on the top plate to confirm loading. This gives a few extra exposures too.

    I bought my little Leica III ten or so years ago. I learned to load the film the same way you described, although I never did the B check with lens unscrewed. I suppose that gives the faint heart some encouragement; the turning knobs and dials are enough for me.
    I have been able to show many other Leica owners how simple it is, but not as many as you with this CZcams show. Well done.

    I have a IIIf and I have never had to cut the film and I have never had a problem. Once the film is loaded onto the take up spool and the cassette is in the camera and base plate on I gently (very gently) rewind the slack until the film is taught. I then wind on two full frames and start to take photos on the third frame. This sometimes does not expose (it has been exposed during the loading process) so I always ensure to take two frames of the first photograph I want to take.
    Oops...just noted that you appear to be now doing the same thing.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Peter, I tried not cutting then a camera died so it spooked me and I went back to cutting. I think it was just unlucky timing and the camera is away for CLA. Maybe I should try it again.

    The shutter button has a dot on it and that will tell you if the film is advancing OK...I don't think there's any need to waste another shot by shooting a frame with the lens off. FWIW, that's what I do with my old Canons anyway.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Před 3 lety

      Thanks, yes sorry this was a simplified ‘fool proof’ example to help beginners. I don’t fire off frames personally but I know that is how most recommend it. There are no dots I’ve seen on Leica. Canon have that little dot in the window. I had a Canon 7 for a short time (see recent video). I just look for the film rewind knob to turn to see if the film has engaged. Thanks

      My guess would be, it is only to be able to see the film without the cut when testing in bulb mode. To make 100% sure your film is grabbed onto the spool. But I think looking at the rewind knob turning is enough. If it turns you are pretty much in business. No need the hassle of cutting the film, what a pain!

    • @barthonhoff5547

      You definitely should cut a leader, when you self fill your cassettes or use Leica cassettes. It might cost you some negatives, but saves your shutter
