I spent 36 years total as a roustabout floor hand, here in N.W. La. I have worked under A - Frames, standard derricks, pole rigs and work-over rigs. I enjoyed working derricks in the standard derricks and the smaller workover rigs. I never got good at latching pipe on the " fast " rigs. I don't miss it much, especially on those cold rainy mornings, but I found the perfect reminder for me, at those times I run out of beer and cigarettes, DAMN ! I need a job !
One readon not to "drop" the standing valve is because if the rods have scale or "gyp" on them, it will rattle off and collect on top of the standong valve in the barrel! 45 yrs doing this.
@@MrSlotter why not just drop it in before you run the pump? Then when you get the rods and pump in you tag bottom make sure it’s seated good and pump it

I did , you back it off 5 rounds when you feel the top of the barrel. works like a charm.

You can do that with a high fluid well but 1900 feet of dry pipe can mess stuff up when it hits bottom.@@jesseblevins1089
