Had my 2004 Td4 for 9 years now, and only had to spend out on it in last couple of years. Refurbed HP fuel pump, VCU and injectors, and replaced suspension, bearings and brakes all round. But at 188k miles, that's not too bad! Runs like it's still new! Love my Freelander and intend to keep it running for as long as I can!

My parents bought one new 20 years ago, a 2002 Bonatti Grey ES TD4 with every option box ticked, shuttled young me around in it for 11 years before trading it in for a Bonatti grey Disco 3 lol. I loved that car as a child, it had the typical window reg issues but it was a pretty reliable car, only had one mechanical breakdown which was only the clutch going.
I still check the reg every now and then and it’s still on the road now, call me insane but I would love to buy it back 🤣

I reluctantly bought one because a disco was too big for her parking space. After 2 months i loved it, keeping it 16 years and 120k. It still had fully functioning 4wd system, the only unexpected expense was a new auto box at 75k. None of the regular problems like leaks on sunroof or back door j. Wimdow winders became a 5 minute change.

The Freelander 2 was better because the development was done under Ford ownership. And Ford also owned Volvo at the time, so many parts on those came from Ford or Volvo, including the engines. More reliable than the original Freelanders, but not Japanese car reliable. These first gen Freelanders were better looking though.

I had one with the infamous K series adapted to LPG. Bought it for £800 and a quick change of HT leads and it ran like a dream for 2 year. On LPG it would run at less than 10p a mile and was quite quick. Granted, it was only used as a workhorse and longest trip would have been 200 miles. it was a bit bouncy and corners were interesting but it was never going to be sporty. It was far more reliable than the BMW X3 & X5 I had subsequently.
It did die in the end, the engine mount went and it was sold as a non-runner for £600 2 years later.

I had two of these, an ‘02 GS manual and a ‘54 HSE Auto. The GS was pre facelift and on the whole a better car esp a nicer quality lesser shiny plastic interior. Admittedly the gear change was like a stick in a bucket, but the auto had so much delay it was dangerous pulling out of junctions. I had both remapped to 140hp and made a huge difference. What did impress me on both was traction on sloppy mud fields and compacted ice. The blank switches around the hand brake are when they moved the window switches onto the door card. I also had the black smoke like the vid, was a split turbo hose. Also since had an FL2 which is worlds apart and should earn a better rep.

I only have great things to say about the freelander, had two in my life and would gladly say I’ll have another one! It’s a 17 year old car not to mention it’s a £1000 car, these cars have still so much potential especially for their price point. It’s not gonna be up to a high standard literally due to the fact it’s a budget landy and it’s rather old. Every car has their issues. Throw some off road tires and replace the boot seal and job done. Also the reason why the glass drops when you open the boot is so you don’t smash the glass when opening it. Ofc if it’s not your cup of tea that’s totally fine, some people prefer a more high class design with fully furnished interior which is cool, but this car is just something else
Overall I really recommend this car, reliable and a cheap and cheerful 4x4 that does the job nicely if you want something fun that can do road driving and ofc off roading 😎

My experience of the one my Mum had until quite recently was overall very good. 2005 TD4 HSE. She had it for 6 years, covered about 40,000 miles. I ended up using it a lot. It just worked md got a real hammering. It had the clutch done and the VCU refurbished at 130k miles. I really hated the gearbox and the driving position though. That opening back window was fantastic for transporting extra long things!
For balance - I drive a mollycoddled, never off-roaded Discovery 2 myself and it’s dog shit unreliable and generally a pain in the arse.

You missed the two extra cup holders right at the bottoms of the doors 😆 I didn’t realise the facelift moved the window switches to the doors and left the blanking panels by the handbrake! Despite their flaws it was Europe’s biggest selling car for some time and really did kick start the small SUV business. I think the pre-facelift design has aged really well actually, just a shame lots haven’t been looked after.

I've had two first gen Freelancers. An 03 Manual TD4 which had a clutch problem which meant I replaced the clutch 3 times in 4 years at £1200 a go. It ended up being a release bearing that the useless mechanics kept missing (from 2 different garages). Had problems with dirty injectors, window regulators kept breaking and rust behind the spare wheel. We took the prop out just to see how it went in 2wd but then putting it back in a year or so later was a NIGHTMARE. Managed to sell it to a farmer a few years back.
Second one was an 05 TD4 Auto. Although a bit smokey at times and sluggish as hell this one was more reliable. My dad now uses it and has done over 175k miles. Still going well, but a bit rough and slow. Like with all cars there are good and bad. I wouldn't call them pure garbage though. They sit nicely on the road and look good. Off road they are better than most, and the economy on the TD4 is pretty good.

I've had a 53 reg Freelander TD4 Sport manual for nearly four years. In that time I've had to replace the propshaft, all the window winder mechanisms, all the central locking mechanism, the bonnet release cable and the thermostat. It has about 100K miles on it and after fixing those issues it ran flawlessly until recently. The clutch slave cylinder seems to be giving up, which is a very big job, and there's vibration at motorway speeds, possibly the VCU bearings.
That said, I've loved driving it. It has loads of character. It's great fun on winding roads, a solid motorway workhorse, and it's never broke down on me. My only real complaint is that it's noisy (could do with a sixth gear) and on long journeys it can get tiring. The seats are very comfortable, though.
I bought a 57 Freelander 2 HSE auto last September and while it's luxurious and much smoother to drive, it's rather boring. The steering is awful, way too overassisted and lacking feel. I'm a bit twitchy, and that can get a bit interesting on the motorway! In the few months I've had it Ive already had to replace te front springs and strut top bearings, gear knob release spring, and worst of all, a job I never want to have to do again, the bloody heater blower motor! The arches are rotting away as well, and the tailgate is starting to rust. I seriously regret buying it.
The FL2 is sat on my drive unused since December and I'm still running around in my dying FL1. I guess I'm weird! 😎

Loved my W reg. Head gasket was sorted early with no damage, cost me around £300 - at the dealer. No leaks, no squeaks, no broken anything. It was knocked over and written off by a little old lady who ran a red light in Peugeot 106 (tightened the corner with a tap on the rear wheel and she flipped!). I’d have driven “Phillip” for many more years if it wasn’t for that. Also, mind you, the ONLY car I have ever owned from new.

Your on the nail with that Freelander Mat.
I briefly owned a petrol version I wanted the TD4 , but at the time couldn't afford the extra money they were fetching.
Big mistake though I liked driving it.
Will go down in my driving history as giving me the biggest repair bills ever 😩

I had a 2003 TD4 Freelander, manual. It was an incredible car and took me everywhere I asked of it. It never gave me any issues… until I drowned it. It ran for 3 more months with no issues, but then it started chucking itself into limp mode and throwing codes all the time. Rusted wiring. Apparently the new owner hasn’t had any issues though. I really miss it, fantastic car.

My brother in law had a freelander mark 1. In Scotland of all places! He went on holiday for 2 weeks and when he got back he couldn't get the thing to move. Turns out the brakes had rusted in the two weeks he was away and they had to get them hammered loose before he could drive it. We drove it and it was nice to drive but it had a no storage for such a large car. We had a long wheelbase A class at the time and that thing could carry more, mainly because there was so much leg room in the back which gave us supplementary storage! :) Good video as ever.

I had a 2005 Freelander 1.8 I bought dead cheap years ago. Great car, fun to drive, certainly wasn't a chore to drive as you say - wonder if the one you drove had other issues?
Mine needed some work, but the parts were cheap and there were plenty of online guides, after that it was just as reliable as anything else.
You never mentioned the best feature of these cars - the electric tail gate window. Dead handy for loading/unloading the boot without opening it, and also a nice way to cool the car when driving.

I had a 16 month old 53 Reg 2.0 TD4 with 13,000 miles - kept it 7 years about 78,000 miles and absolutely loved it! It was very reliable bar the injectors eventually going - I had them replaced with refurbished injectors but sold it to a work colleague as I used it for towing a caravan and with the injectors going I just felt it was time to change as I didn’t want to break down with a caravan on the back, however, 3 years on and my work colleague said it was still reliable and going great guns - I’m not sure if he’s still got it as I retired 8 years ago. But suffice to say my experience on the whole was contrary to Matt’s - everything was still working, all the electrics, windows including the rear door window, sunroof - no leaks! And was a good solid tow car all the way to the mountainous Castellaine in France one summer (1,000 miles there - 3,000 miles holiday in 16 days). Loved it 👍😁

OK it’s not the best finished but at the time it wasn’t bad, it was the well spec’d Kalahari edition - even had a CD multi changer! 😂 A friend had a company Freelander 2 auto and he loved that one but LR prices had ‘Premiumed up!’

Hi Matt , just watched the Freelander video, here's abit of nerdy trivia about it. My mate used to work for Mintex Brakes, testing brake pads on car's, one of the car's was a prototype for the Freelander. It was just a test Mule car and it ended up getting crushed when they had finished with it. The car was an old Maestro van with jacked up suspension and the interior from a Rover 200 . Then when the very first Freelander s came out he did slot of testing with different brake pads and I would join him for test drives .

I ran a 2001 freelander for 10 years and had all the usual problems, clutch, VCU, fuel pumps, abs sensors, cam sensor, windows, you name it, but, when I woke up to blizzards in 2010, some 2 foot deep, the plucky wee hippo managed to ferry 30+ staff to and from work for a week in order to keep our cash and carry open. It managed everything I asked it to, also rescued countless BMW's and mercs. And that was on well used road tires. I have a freelander 2 now and although I love it, I've spent more on that in 2 years than I did on the hippo in 10. She was more a hobby than transport😂 but if maintained always ran well. A diamond very much in the rough 😊

I bought a 1.8 Petrol Freelander for £800 a couple of years ago as I needed a car for 2 weeks and this was cheaper than hiring one - I ended up having it as my daily for 2 years. It had all the usual issues in that time - 2 window regulators broken, water in boot, propshaft bearings and drop links replaced in my ownership. However, it drove well, never failed to start or broke down and was great for piling high with luggage for holidays, dogs and tip runs. I never needed to worry about where I parked it, never worried about someone clipping a wing mirror and once left it on the street in London overnight with the keys in the ignition and it was still there in the morning. I paid £800 for the car and spent c.£1200 on maintenance in those 2 years. It was also ULEZ compliant. I would regard £1k a year all in for a car is pretty good going (noting the fact that I could sell it and get some of that cost back).

I bought a freelander 1 for my wife cheap off ebay. I did have to repair door locks and windows and do a low pressure fuel pump, there are two pumps on some and when one fails the other struggles. The sunroof did leak and someone had put one of the rear drums back together wrong. She drove it for years only needing servicing, tyres exhaust etc, I did rebuild the prop but never got round to putting it back on and sold if for not much less than I paid for it. The odd tyres won't help the viscous coupling. I forgot also had to do rear door handle as if was falling off when I bought it. One of the best value cars we have had.

My wife had one that was 5 years old at the time she bought it, with 50K miles. The rear differential mounts failed in the first 4 months, the IRD and viscous coupling 6 months later (£3000 repair bill), to limit those failing you should all 4 tyres at the same time, more expense. All the windows failed at least once. The rear window was a complete nightmare, that small drop to open the the tailgate is so over complicated. Eventually the turbo went, that was the end of it then.

I have had a Freelander 1 for 15 years. It's been a great car with just shy of 200k on the clock. It's had a couple of clutches a rear fuel pump and the belts changed. It was immaculate when I first acquired it and it was the daily driver. It eventually became a third car/ leisure vehicle, but it's been a great workhorse over the years. Of the problems you mentioned in your video, the near side rear window ceased working, but was easily fixed. I have had a very positive ownership experience with it.

I bought one (54 plate petrol SE) in time for the arrival of my son to have plenty of room to ferry all the gear around. Also I’d had a nasty motorcycle accident so wanted to feel a little safer and have a better driving position.
I had it for three years and loved it for the majority of the time but the suspension was noisy, exhaust manifold needed replacing and eventually had problems with the cylinder head. I just got shut of it on eBay for whatever I could get in the end.
I’ve looked at the MOT history since selling it and think I dodged a bullet as it’s needed extensive work each year!
