I have done 190000 miles in the 2006 TD4 facelift from UK to Kosovo return five times, never had a major problem , never got stuck. Winter / summer Snow floods. Serviced every 6000 miles ,10W40 fully synthetic Oil.
It is now classed as a herritage vehicle in the British motor museum. Not many are given this classification from the Museum. Going up in value now.

Haven't these MK1 Freelanders aged really well? I think they are such a neat piece of design. I would love a completely original early one.

Yes, I 100% have to agree with you, even inside, like if you have a small family, they're perfect. Maybe more sensible in diesel format but what a lovely alternative as a family car to a modern SUV.

Very under-rated LR, that can hold its own off road. My TD4 has 130k on it, fully working in every aspect. Goes anywhere (and everywhere)!

The front door cards was ment to be done but ran out of fabric and I spent most weekends cleaning it to keep it well looked after. the stickers with the 140 on are different Freelander groups members number. Can't wait to see what you do with with her

Thanks for the comment, I was so impressed by the condition! Now that the Hilux has gone the way is clear for a plan to come together. I can see myself hanging on to this for a bit.

    Hi 😀 I have a 3 door Freelander , and absolutely love it 😍 .
I exceeds my expectations of it by a country mile .
To be honest , I was worried about the so called reliability problems , but after 6 months ownership and roughly 8,000 miles , reliability has been great , even considering it is an old car now 😀

This is exactly how I felt about my Freelander. Bought it on a whim thinking i'd keep it a few weeks and move it on... it's still here!

I'm glad your hiatus has worked so well! The Land Rover does have something going for it, it's not a Hilux Shark Rescue Edition for starters.... Could it be a Wurzels themed edition? A Harry's Farm tribute? A Camel Trophy lookalike?.. What will you surprise us with Geoff?

Lovely lookin' motor there for it's age, and obviously not been abused (which is rare nowadays). Mods on it look similar to what I have on mine, especially the noisy mud terrains 😁

Had mine for 5 years, its cost more in tax than repairs. Use it every day. Last week I had to go through 2 floods to do a drop off.

I've always wanted the 2 door version with the removeable rear roof section and the diesel engine... rip out the rear seats and just have a handy silly pick up thing with a fabric cover.

I had one of these and they're more capable than they're given credit for BUT the exhaust is very exposed from the mid section to the back box and it's not hard to rip the whole thing off if you're not careful.

Land Rover is Solihull not castle Bromwich. That’s the jaguar plant. The freelander was built in Halewood though.

A year ago I was two years into a rebuild/restoration/FML kind of scenario...bought a TD4 for my daughter(two kids/one on the way) looked beautiful but had every 'malady' you could ever imagine as a TD4 Freelander 1 owner could have. Anyhoo fixed all that shit for it to just fail a MOT on a loose steering wheel..and a soft spot on the rear of the passenger side sill..although it wasn't 'just' a small hole and when I start digging I make Rio Feckin' Tinto look like rank amatuers...so the pressure was on to get it fixed..3 years later...my daughter decided 'feck this' and bought a Volvo C90...she needed the extra room as she now has 5 kids..again..FML...anyhoo after such extravagance on her part I have cracked on and I'm now nearing completion of said project.. Welding..yeah I've done that bit..but it will be my car...so who gives af.....well, you know...looking forwards to being slagged off by every Land Rover owner who doesn't have aFreelander..

I bought mine in 2006. A 1.8 with a dodgy clutch, but soon got rid and bought a mint 2001 3 door 2.5 V6 ES with just 36K on the clock. Within 12 months it went from a top-of-the-range flagship to full on rally car. Then I bought a Td4 and did the same to that. I used to go to the Billing Land Rover show, but when I was completely shunned when I turned up one year in the Freelander. Despite the internal roll-cage etc, it still wasn't a "real " Landy. Then, the last year it was held, I was then told by another Freelander owner, "We don't modify OUR Freelanders !", so I was effectively shunned by the Freelander crowd !!!
Strange thing is, since selling my Freelander 1's (One 1.8, one V6 and 3 Td4's) I now see modified Freelanders everywhere. They're a great way to get in to cheap Land Rover ownership and are easy to work on.
After 30 years of Land Rover ownership across many different models, I still own one. A Freelander 2 i6 3.2 petrol. Highly modified - but no roll cage !
I've had it for 8 years and it's been the most reliable Land Rover I've owned. The problem I have is what to replace it with as there's nothing that ticks all my boxes.

If it's been sorted properly the head gasket shouldn't fail again. You've just got to cross your fingers and hope some cretin hasn't just stuck an MLS gasket on it thinking that would fix all the issues.

I got the TD4 Station Wagon, 200,000 miles now, serviced every 5000 miles, no problems, now a classic and shooting up in price, I just did 5000 miles around Europe, had the front bearings changed on return, they were the original ones fitted at time of production. 400 miles to a tank of diesel, parked in numerous tessla bays just for a laugh.

I have a "real" Landrover and also a Freelander 1. The Defender obviously wins on towing and load carrying and really rough terrain but the Freelander easily wins on snow and ice, slippery fields etc. and you can drive it down the motorway without going deaf.

  • @SpitfireFortyFour

My MG F ticked over 110k this week, going from the service history that's only had one head gasket in its life. Back in 2007!
If you get someone that knows what they're doing the K-Series is an extremely reliable unit! That ones appears to have been well cared for. While I generally loath SUVs dare I say it, I like the original Freelander.

Really? FL2's have their demons too.
FL1's have a better practicality design inside and out imo. Rough, ready, cheap and cheerful poor man's 'Defender' - just w/o a low range crawler gear.
