- I picked up a sample pack of Hahnemüle Fine Art Glossy paper recently. This is a great way to find out what paper is gonna be the best choice for your work. In the video, I break down what you can expect to find in a sample pack like this and how my results turned out using the paper in my Canon Pro 10. Hope you guys enjoy it!

I only recently started to print my photos after so many years of photography, and I have to say, the Hahnemüle photo rag is absolutely gorgeous. I've been really pleased with the outcome, even via commercial printers. The texture is perfect for b&w and colour. But, I prefer matte papers. If you're into glossier prints, the Baryta Satin also looks lovely based on your last print.
Still...the important thing is just to remember to print your pictures everyone! Such a great feeling holding a print in your hands. Cannot recommend it enough.
Hey Matt, I'd love to see some more videos on printing from you. I feel like printing is an aspect of photography that is often neglected these days. Making a print is a permanent rendition of the image the photographer created - it's a commitment to what we as photographers have produced.
Just saw you in CZcams here. Subscribed and looking forward to searching your other videos.
Just last week I got two sample packs of the Hahnemuhle’s fine art glossy.
I too use Red River papers.
Thank you for the review. Love it!
I have been printing for a year now, shooting for nearly 8 years. Nikon D810 with a variety of used lenses.
I Use a Canon Pro-10. Am using Precision Color inks for economic reasons and extremely pleased.
For the hahnemuhle paper I think I will make my own ICC files so I get the beat results with that paper and the ink.
Red river icc canon files have been very good but want to have the best results with the best paper now.
BTW
Your daughter is absolutely adorable!
Looking forward to learning watching more.
Scott
Back in the day (late 1970's-early 1980's) we had to texture prints and apply a matte spray finish ourselves before delivery to clients who wanted something other than the basic semi-gloss of most fiber-based color prints from professional labs. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent feeding prints through the machine that applied the texture to the paper or in the spray booth shooting prints with matte lacquer. Fun times! (Yeah...I'm old!)
Haha, I'm sure it was a fun process at first, but imagine it got VERY monotonous over time.
I'm old too. Hand spaying the prints: don't get too close as the finish will be uneven and the room HAD to be well ventilated! Good times though.
Oh btw, I just realised I stopped listening about the papers and started thinking how cool your photos looked man! Especially when printed! Really enjoy your work. Honestly, you make beautiful photographs.
Nice to see some love for half-frame! I’ve got an Olympus Pen EES-2 that’s a lot of fun to shoot. 72 shots a roll makes it good for when you’ve got to travel light and don’t have room for a bunch of extra rolls.
Really enjoying this one! Might have to keep it.
What's the minimum focus distance on the pen? I have just got an EE3 and I am still working stuff out.
Dan Jones On the Pen EES-2, the closest focus is 0.9 meters, or about 3 feet
Makes me wanna get my own printer
Worthy investment, in my opinion.
choose a good turntable first.
@@superidyt yeah and don't put those speakers so close to it
Matt thanks for the great video. One of the best videos I have seen on comparing different paper textures! Keep these videos coming.
People are so silly and ridiculous sometimes. If you think about it, what are the components that make a flatbed scanner work? The answer is: light, lens or lenses, a sensor, and processing to convert that into a digital file. How is that different from "scanning" or "digitalizing" a negative with a digital camera? People should just stop being non sense and use whatever the heck they want to make their negatives become a digital image, get over it people and let it be, just let it be.
THANK YOU! Couldn't agree more. Use an 8x10, use an iPhone, I'm not gonna tell you how to make your work. I just want you to enjoy it. :)
it's the stupid petty patrol we have to thank for that..same morons who call people stupid names like 'fanboy
because they dot shoot with the same brand they do..same crybabies about anything else besides actual shooting..
So when I go to the store and request to buy a scanner and the clerk gives me a camera I ought not question it ?
Or when I go the image-service store and request a scan of my old print and they use a Fuji xT or whichever camera, I ought not question it ?
Why call it a scan when the term is used for specific meaning and context when that specific meaning and context was not applied ?
That is what creates confusion and misunderstandings -
some words do have definitions and meanings -
And yes, I have, many times, used my camera to make digital files of old printed photographs or other images, too - and they are fine high resolution files, for that matter - but why would I label them scans ???
Here we go again 🤦♂️ dear God, give me patience. How is that so confusing if someone says "I scanned my negatives with my digital camera"? If I am new to the game and don't get it, I will probably go to the internet and Google it, and I will probably find this same video; all I will have to do after that is to watch the darn video and I will have a clue of what is going on.
If I ever work at your regular photo lab where you take your stuff to have done and I see you coming in, I swear God I will "SCAN" your negatives with my X-T20 (not even a X-T3) and you won't even notice it, you will probably be like "wow, these guys are improving their service quality every day" 🤭
Or, if I ever work at your local electronics retail store and I see you coming in to buy a scanner, I will run to take care of you, and when you ask me to show you the scanners we have, I swear God I will ask you "Do you have any brand preference: Fuji, Canon, Nikon, Sony...maybe Epson?" 😝
Como on guys, let's try to enjoy the content and information people put out there for us instead of being crying because "this guy calls it a scan, that guy calls it whatever, and I call it MY GRANDMA IN BIKINI". Man, we are peeing outside the toilet for no reason.
@@Guairenito ..it's called being PETTY,because that's what stupid people do,they focus elsewhere, instead of the point..
Great video Matt , I’ve watched a number of videos on hanemuhle paper over the years but I must say this is one of the best, keep up the good work.
Oh wow.
In 8:22 you can find the paper I am going to buy for some prints.
Digitized negative film... right, if we go deeper, we can say digital photography is not photography. Film is photography, physically leaving the light trace on the celluloid.
But hey, both produce images and that is what we are here for.
I love this channel, It's one of the few (Art of photography, Hugh Brownstone, and you) that I feel the conversation on photography and the peripherals around it are equally important.
Most channels just talk about gear as if it was jewelery.
Really enjoying the direction of your content recently, very watchable. Cheers, 👍
Whether they want to call it a scan or 'digitized' it's the same thing. The scanner is just a lot slower. Like you said, the world will still be spinning tomorrow :). Another great video Matt.
Photo Rag Pearl has been my fav paper ever since it came out. I save it for my fav pics, though, otherwise I’d be broke!
If you're looking to take your prints to the next expressive/fine art level - please consider Awagami digital papers from Japan
I almost exclusively use Hahnemühle paper on my prints, I really like the Photo rag bright white (310gsm) for most of my prints, but I also use the Bamboo one, it has a different look and feel to it than any other photo papers that I've tried.
Good video.. I agree with you about the Fine Art Baryta, the texture with the soft gloss and the weight of the paper gives it a certain richness. Although, I need to test it further. For matte paper, I haven't tried a bunch, but the Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 is really nice in my opinion.
Try Hahnemuhle Museum Etching for landscape. Fabulous!
Thank you Matt, very interesting. There are not many videos that show this topic so well, and the photos are very beautiful.
Thank you! I tried to show the paper the best that I could. It's not easy to convey that through video but I hope it was helpful!
Matt, that image of Nora in the glasses is incredible mate. These fine papers also look amazing. I didn't think I'd ever want to get into printing my work like that before. If I ever get asked about prints of my work, I may just have to look into it. Not that I have a phobia or anything, but I kinda hate printers, as they never work like they should with me...hehe
Really enjoyed that video Matt, makes me want to have a break from the darkroom and give digital printing a go. Some of those papers look really nice. The Holga portrait and the shot of the missus and Nora are beautiful work by the way.
You sure got a good Matt finish
Nice vidéo, very interesting, thank you !
Thank you Matt. Love the episode! Inspired me to print today, had only glossy paper though. I want to try out other type of papers. It is such a joy to hold the prints in our hands.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
that was such an awesome video, thanks for taking the time. I'd love to see a video where you go through the printing process and what kind of printers you'd recommend these days. :)
Great video, printing photos is really a great feeling for your own work!
Hahnemüle is so amazing. Look into their rice paper, its expensive but beautiful. Met one of their reps and couldn't speak highly of them. The second paper is my favorite paper reminds me a lot if Ilford Warm Tone Fiber paper.
Good looking out! I'll see if I can find a sample of that paper next time I'm up at Midwest.
@@mattdayphoto any time man!
I use the photo rag and German etching, they are both beautiful!
The German Etching is on my list of papers to try! I've seen a sample in person and it's gorgeous.
Matt Day it’s fairly similar to the photo rag, but with a fair bit more texture. Looks great for my b/w family photos. Thanks for replying man, love your stuff, been watching for years! Gonna start ‘scanning’ my negs with my XT2, just waiting on the pixlatr frame to get delivered from Kickstarter campaign. You look as though you’re getting great results!
Wonderful images, Matt!
Great video Matt. I’m going to check out that sample pack.
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it!
I love this, really enjoyed the info about the different paper. I found an old minolta xg1 in the basement but it was broken so got my hand on a minolta srt 101 and see how that turns out to shoot with. Thanks to your video with the xt3 scan, you got me into analog photography and it is so mindblowing. Thank you for that!
This is so cool to hear! Enjoy that Minolta! My first camera was the Minolta XG-M and I love it. Have fun!
Very nice review on the different papers. Thank you much♡
Thanks!, this awesome! Your channel and videos are always awesome!
I want that crooked print! That's becoming a collector item!
Very interesting. I like printing but I don't own a printer. Maybe in the future you can talk about different printers as well and about owning vs printing at a shop instead. Thanks
Thanks for this wideo, I just looking for paper to print my photos, could you send link with this set. Thanks.
I think you should use the word "scan" but also over-emphasise it and arch your eyebrow to camera in a knowing kinda way. Or perhaps wink. Pedants on the internet... sigh... As far as paper goes, you missed the best one which they have yet to include in their sample pack. The recently released Photo Rag Metallic is absolutely stunning for contrasty B&W images but you'll need to remortgage the house to pay for it... For me, the best paper in their collection (apart from the metallic) is the Photo Rag Baryta. Shame it's so hideously priced (in the uk) vs the much more affordable - and similar in results - Canson Platine Fibre Rag. I love paper - for me it's the final part of the creative process.
Hahaha, right?! That sounds like a plan!
And I've actually wanted to try some of that metallic paper for really high contrast black and white images.
Great video! Should really use my printer more :-)
We have a really great lab here in Oslo where I've made darkroom prints for my first exhibition last year, and I learned a lot from the guy running it about paper. He basically said to stay away from Kodak paper and use Fuji or Hahnemühle. They use Fuji for analogue prints and Hahnemühle for digital, if I remember correctly.
Mega helpful, thank you.
Really like your style! Good info. Thanks.
Great video, photo papers are very exciting and would love seeing more of these videos from you. If you haven't tried Canson Platine, it's pretty outstanding!
Oddly enough,I just finished using a sample of this paper, and my impressions are very close to what Matte says,,its a A+A+A+ review-I strongly suggest you view his comments
Awesome vid Matt, keep it up bro
I have a Pro 10-s and i've always printed with Pro Platinum, but now i really wanna try some matte paper for my color work!
Some color photos don't work as well on matte paper but for portraits, I really love it! That soft texture is really nice.
What do you do about the paper curl? The only suggestion I've seen is roll the print in the opposite direction. Is there
a way to weight or stretch the paper as the ink is drying to prevent curl?
So basicly Fine Art papers are for b&w prints simulating the old metal halide process. Yes, no?
Matt I also print on the Pro 10. Great paper selections...also try the test packs of Red River Paper, I get good results for my Fuji images.
If you watched the first 2 minutes of the video, you would have seen the parts where he said he uses Red River more than any other brand. Weird that you would have missed that. lol
If you like a paper texture, try their William Turner
Very helpful and informative video! Thank you!
excellent thank you !
This is awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Matt. I found this helpful.
Amazing Matt thank you very much
Would love more videos on printing as I have zero experience, and only own a simple printer for contracts and such.
Hey Matt, love the video! Just wondering about your process when it comes to printing to these different papers: Did you make adjustments to the images based on what paper you were going to print them on?
I'm thinking in particular about the image that you printed on two different papers, and how much adjusting say the black point compensation and so on for the print on each paper type might have bridged the gap in terms of how different the two prints turned out.
Good stuff Matt. Thanks.
Thank your for your input. Your prints rock! How often do you Print to keep the Printer Cleaning - and Waste of INK - to a minimum? You are right btw, they are scans. A Scanner is basically a single row of photosensitive transistors. Think of it as a panorama stitch of 1000 single row "pictures". Same thing a Camera does really, but streamlined and much much faster. And please make a Video about your Vinyl Collection
Thank you! I usually print at least a couple of times a week, sometimes more, depending on my paper and ink supply (and bank account. Haha).
Awesome video dude, thanks
Thanks for this! Very informative and exactly what I was looking for.
Question, what have you done to finish off your prints on the favorite paper? Mounted? Float frame? behind glass?
Thanks!
I have an official™ Matt Day© print and I can speak to the quality of his prints and paper selections. You should absolutely buy one for yourself!
Also not to be too critical but I do miss the sound of the lav mic, a few too many p's and s's in this one for my tastes
I was wondering about that. Everyone with mics like a radio host for U-tube. Same with a DSLR for video. Why not a video cam with push button zoom? I don't do video so , just wondering.
Loved this video, I know it’s an oldie, but great content and helpful. I have ordered some sample packs of the Hahnemühle paper for my Pro 10. One question though, do you colour calibrate your Mac screen for colour home prints? I have watched a few videos on it, and I just don’t know if I can bring myself to buy the gear to do it, and even if I will notice the difference. Thoughts?
I love the 0:43 photo, warm and cute family
Thank you so much!
Wow!!
Hey Matt, great videos and I’m really glad your recovery is going so well.
For the images shown in this vid that were medium format, were they scanned by traditional method or by “FujiScan”?
People really chap my a$$ when they fret over silly things like what to call scans. 🤦🏽♂️. Call them what you want.
That's what I'm screamin'!
Hello Matt! How do you create the black and then the white frame around your photos?
Thanks so much for all your great videos!
A great vid man.
Matt have you tried Moab paper i started using it last year i love it, its a paper manufactured in North America i am from Ireland and have no problem getting Moab
Interesting video Matt and well done for putting the pedantic trolls in their place.
Awesome video... I have been looking for a good paper for landscape photography. I generally use canon semi gloss and am looking for something a little nicer that can get that pop and colors. Any recommendation? Thanks so much
Did you get any print head strike on the edges of the heavier paper? I’ve been using the Hahnemuhle Baryta 320gsm paper and the edge curl is messing with the printer I’ve been using. Thanks for showing all the samples!
Awesome video as always dude!
Question though. Why digital printing and not darkroom printing? I mean, you develop yourself. So darkroom printing seems like the most logical step. Not that there is anything wrong with either method. :-)
BTW. Noticed on Instagram that you are part of the lomography test group of potsdam kino 100. Me too!
No idea what I want to try it on yet. But I think I will find something haha. :)
Hi Matt great video have you tried any of the metallic lustre paper ? It's really nice.
Nice and very educational video! Thanks for sharing!
Have you ever tried printing on Canson Infinity paper?
I recently had a BW photo taken with a Fuji X-T2 professionally printed on Hahnemühle photo rag and had issues with the black levels and dynamic range of the print (a reprint with additional tweaks to the photo was needed) even though the file looked good on my calibrated screen.
In the past I had photos printed on Canson Infinity paper and results were fine and coherent to the file as seen on screen, no problem whatsoever even at the first print run.
So for me at the moment Hahnemühle has been a letdown but maybe it was just the lab at fault...
Did you had to make special adjustment for the prints that you showed on the video? Your results are very good!
Thanks for watching! I've never tried that paper but have heard good things. I didn't make any special adjustments, just used the appropriate ICC profiles for that paper type.
The world is just going to keep on spinning. Yes.
Don't sweat the small stuff!
Nice video, Matt. Are you doing more digital printing lately, or darkroom printing?
Thanks, man! I'm doing all inkjet printing now, I no longer have my darkroom at home. We needed the bathroom space.
I just saw your video. I have tried alle of the papers you talk about, and I think they are really good. But please. Next time be sure to face the prints to the viewers all the time.
what kind of printer would you recommend for printing not to big prints.
Question: If you can only get one kind of paper to print the work, which one will you pick Matt? Red River Palo Duro SoftGloss Rag?
Hmm.. That's tough. That's a great all around paper, but I might go for one of these papers instead. I need to sample some more!
Hahnemühle & canson infinity are the best paper
So you like every paper from them?
Dear Matt, thank you for your video. If you are in b&w printing, maybe you should check out the quadtone rip, a very affordable software turning my Epson 3880 into 20-30 % better machine for black and white. Using ICC Profiles from Hahnemühle is one thing, but this quadtone software helps a lot.
Thank you for your videos.
I'll look into that! Thanks for the tip!
Love the printing videos! Thank you and keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching!
A suggestion would be to put a pop filter over that microphone if you're going to be talking to it so closely. The plosives are really harsh. 1:59 for an example. The T in twenty five, the P in paper, the P in pack.
Yeah, I'm looking into a slightly different setup to alleviate that. Thanks for the feedback.
and are these a4 print size?... I love your images btw
No, no, no, you all got it wrong! It is well know that the process is called "replicating negatives", done since the film days. Thank God I was here to correct the world 😁
Where do you keep the prints?
great content...
What kinds of inks do you use? I have started to use a third party ink for my canon pro 100 and found while it saves me a lot of money, i'm not sure exactly what difference it has made
I always use the Canon brand inks but have heard some third party inks are good too.
Interesting video, Matt. Are you still happy with the Pro 10 printer? Thinking about getting one but have zero printing experience. 🤷♂️
Thanks.
Very happy with this printer, for sure! I have a couple of videos on using it from a year or so ago, those might be helpful too!
Matt Day Thanks, Matt. I’ll take another look at those.👍
Okay but how am I supposed to make myself feel good if I can't nitpick everything you say and do?
Great video Matt, can you recommend the Canon Pro 10 printer? Or can you recommend any other printer. I am looking to find a good printer for B&W pictures. Thank you, love your channel !
I definitely recommend the Pro 10. Pigment based ink, the prints are made to last and you get really rich black and white images.
Thank you 😊 I will consider it then!
I also got the Pro 10S printer and I‘m extremely happy with it. I fell in love with printing and the more I print the better I get at it and the more I appreciate it. I‘d also definitely choose the Pro 10 (or other good pigment based printers) over the Pro 100 because as Matt said, pigment based prints last. I‘ve only used Canon paper up until now but I‘m considering to try out other paper soon and it‘s very exciting, especially after seeing the beautiful prints in this video.
Fabio Mota thank you for your advice 😀
The Pro 10 is a fantastic printer for black and whites, just plan on running out of the Chroma Optimizer a lot. Inks aren't cheap, so factor that into your considerations.
Funny how you pronaunce "Hahnemühle" :-)
If you don't also have another daughter named Molly, this is a MAJOR dad fail!
Hahaha, my wife's name is Molly. I filmed this video at like 11pm after the kids were in bed. It was a long day!
I'd take the fine art over the rag on the side by side comparison, the blacks are richer.
Why do people on the internet have to debate every little thing? 🤨It must be exhausting
Digiscanographic Images of film negatives or transparencies? Meh.
Hahaha, there we go! I think you're onto something there. But can we make it even more complicated...?
Pop filter, get it Matt. Especially if you're making a video with "paper" mentioned every now and then.
I'm going to make this short: Fuck everyone who is sitting behind the keyboard and not actually creating anything just talking bullshit about your work. !
3:06 - 3:14 What Matt really tried to say: "Fuck you and mind your own business"
Hahahahahaha! Something to that effect!
I shoot the digital Pen F :)
