It's a cool start for the new era for sure buttttttttttttt Too bad it wasn't the "renewed Ricoh GRIV film camera" w/better materials similar to how Leica relaunched the M6 ////With the hype of the Gr's and them being sold out everywhere now a days - I think it would have sold even better and they could have kept the price at 8-900 and it would have sold out. Maybe in the future.....

i like his take. i've seen a bunch of reviews/first impressions the past 24hrs and they have been mostly dismissive or indifferent. i love film. i wouldn't buy it for the price but i appreciate its potential place in history.

This is a tough one. On one hand you're 1000% correct. I want it to succeed and for other companies to take notice and bring more film cameras to market. On the other hand I have near zero use for this one. Currently own a near mint Olympus Trip-35 that I use for the exact reasons you list this half frame being good at.

I think kids who shoot on iphone and want film will enjoy this. And it is a base for a future full frame more manual camera.

Good for the 17 people who'll buy this. Just tells you exactly why pentax is now where it is. Totally irrelevant.

Like the Iris Setter in the chair - nice touch. I love half frame so I know I will buy a 17 just to encourage Pentax to do more! Please Pentax bring back the 645N and either the MZ-3 or MZ-S using the same lens mount.

i have been using the Konica C35 as a backup to medium format but this actually makes it a great choice for backup for Medium Format if it fails during trips

500 USD or 500 EURO....Hmmm.... For half-frame film camera. Shutter Speed 1/350 to 4 seconds.... Manual winding and rewinding....Zone focusing...Nonsense

i’ve been pretty impressed by the image quality. i think the modern lens technology is maybe helping compensate for the lower resolution from the half frame. hope to pick one up at some point.

It’s great that a new film camera has been designed, developed, and manufactured. I wish it was a little more substantial! It’s a start! Hopefully, sales of the camera are robust! So, additional film cameras will be released! 👍🏻

I think they’re going for the Contax T2 type market. I’d love to see a side-by-side comparison of the shots. These look nice for half frame.

I think a follow-up half-frame with full manual OR aperture priority would be useful in the space where film is still expensive. Doubling the exposures with still more than decent image quality (which is what I'm hearing from reviews) is a compelling idea!

Half-Frame is where it's at! Give me a prosumer half-frame!!

this camera would be perfect if it had auto focus...auto, aperture, shutter, and manual mode, 35mm full frame and interchangeable lenses...all doable with the same form factor. maybe this will lead to a pentax 35 and then a pentax 67 down the line

I am getting one, simply because I want them to produce more film cameras, so we need this one to succeed; half frame is sooooo not my jam, but, light at the end of the tunnel!

All we wanted was a new Spotmatic and they gave us this one. Film community is too nice to say that it's a toy/junk camera that you can buy for $500.

With a 1.7 or 1.9 lens ( like some Canon Demi I use) and full manual exposure it could be a better deal for me. But good restart in analogic world for Pentax.

I love Pentax lenses and how intuitive Pentax cameras are. I am sure this one won’t disappoint plus it is fun to shoot with half frame

The price is the only reason I’m not considering one. You could get two Pen FTs or a Canon P etc. for the price of one of these! I get the whole “it’s being reinvested in film” but there needs to be a value proposition for users, otherwise just ask for donations.

It’s a style failure. Still I want to have one. The camera is perfect. Pentax nailed it, just would love to have the viewfinder not so much look like a U-boat, but on the other side it’s fun.

Half frame was an interesting specification and I've got to admit that it looks really nice physically speaking, but the Bokeh mode is going to far with Pentax idea to catch a wider audience which loves their depth mode on their phones... I mean, film is great the way it's always been and part of the magic is to learn how to shoot what you want!

Auto mode puts it into fixed focus hyperfocal mode. Changing the distance does nothing in the Auto mode

Such a beautiful camera. Never shot half frame but I’m used to zone focus from my Minox 35 EL. Hope the FF Pentax is not double the price lol.

This looks like a good start, would love this in a full frame 35mm version. Maybe even a fixed lens 120mm version would fit a nice niche

I hope it is an indicator to Pentax that people are still interested in film and are willing to invest in a new film camera and continue making devices. That is the hope.

Why? Why not a nice new body, full frame with K mount. This is just too expensive for what it is.

Half-frame resolution camera is awesome! keep pushing and let Leica prices go up ;0) use cameras are too flooded in the market like the SLR's film full frame cameras. what were they thinking about Pentax half frames from a marking standpoint? Pentax should have been smarter to modify it from the back, so the photographer could choose a full frame or half frame. Kodak and other Chinese manufacturers produce half-frame film cameras and do they sell a lot on the market? paying $500 for a half frame makes no sense. That camera will be a passing fad, and you could buy a good used Canon half-frame for a lot cheaper...

The design is horrible, and the price is idiotic for a half-frame camera.
