    what he could do next year is trade somewhere else as a trade deadline rental, get a boatload of assets for the pens, then resign with them the next year. Even as a rental the price he would fetch is still sky high

      I'm a Pens fan. Could you imagine if he plays this year out, continues at a high level next year on the sinking ship Pens, does exactly what OP is suggesting, helps the team retool at the deadline, goes and wins a cup wherever he gets traded, comes back to the Pens with all of their new assets, and wins one more cup as a Pen?
      As much as I want Sid's legacy to only be wearing a Pens jersey, him doing that would be akin to Mario saving the franchise twice. And ending up with five career cups, four as a Pen, in the process, holy hell...
      I'm aware this is all a long shot, but if there's one athlete who deserves the stars to align to send him off the right way, it's Sid.

    It might not be feasible until his contract is up, but I'd love to see him play with MacKinnon or McDavid while he still has some juice left. Also, Crosby's contracts have never been about money, so you know he'd take a discount to play with them, and even if he had to play the wing to be on their line. He's a selfless player.

      I 100 percent agree. But what happens if he plays with both and if he does 4 years left he could do 2 years on each team.. and I think if he did I would think he would want to play with McKinnon first but I could be wrong

      As an Oilers fan id love to see Crosby play with McDavid but I'd also hate if he joined this year and the Oilers won a cup and then the narrative turned into "McDavid needed Crosby's help to win a cup"

    • @dw1784
      @dw1784 Před 4 měsíci

      @scottiepaterson192 First of all, I don't think you would hate anything about the Oilers winning the Cup. I think you would get over that narrative quickly lol Also, I don't think Holland has the brain power to figure out how to fit Crosby under the cap this year. That's why I mentioned it might not be feasible until Crosby has the ability to sign a new contract at a discount.
      I'd love to see Crosby play with McDavid since they've never been allowed to play in the Olympics together. It is remarkable to see how dominant he still is at 36. At 8.7MM today, he's still underpaid. Most players sign 8 year deals, and the GM says, "Well, it will help us today, and we'll start regretting it by year 5 or 6." Crosby has always outperformed his contract, and his deal was 12 years or something like that before the 8 year max was implemented.

      @scottiepaterson192 Před 4 měsíci

      @@dw1784 I never said I'd hate them winning the cup. I'd hate the narrative that would no doubt follow if it was after Sid joined, even though the Oilers look deadly enough to be a contender already.
      Dont get me wrong if we could add him and it were up to me obviously I'd do it in a second, just speaking more about all the people who would try and say it was because of Sid and try to discredit the hard work 97 and 29 have done to round out their game. In a perfect world, Oilers win the cup without Sid and then add him and win a few more ;) ahaha

    Plenty of players have gone cup hunting. We dont bemoan it when Iginla or Kariya or Bourque or Robataille go looking, but Sid doesnt have to. Mario was there to mentor and to put the kid up.
    You can be a respectable franchise and trade your aging star. Or you can be a respected franchise that proves sometimes the name on the jersey is so engrained in the story and legacy of the franchise that to see them in another uniform is an embarassment.
    If the captain wants to go down with the ship, let him. He's earned that. Be competitive. Mortage your future and try to get a real steal somehow. Hedge Gamble. Executives gotta earn their paycheck too.

    I've been a Penguins fan since 1990, when I was 6. I understand your arguments. As much as I have hoped him Geno and Letang play together for their entire careers, which would be a first in history and likely never seen again in my lifetime, I get it. If they aren't fighting for the division lead this year and they are only going to be another year older next year, how will they ever make the playoffs again with this group?
    Sid could fetch good young talent and draft picks to help build for the future. They could also retain some salary and trade Geno, Letang, Karlsson and Guentzel (before he leaves for FA) and be closer to making the playoffs again in 5 years than if they keep them until retirement and they leave with nothing but cap space and no one wanting to sign with them to use it up. As long as the returns are the opposite of the result of the Jagr trade, this would help them long term.
    They are still fun to watch today, although a bit frustrating at times, and that is why they have been on the outside looking in all season long. They haven't been consistent enough to leapfrog anyone.
    So as much as I hate to say it, as a couch GM, I'd tear it down for the benefit of the long term gains. They will be like the Pens of the early to mid-2000's which was the most depressing time I've had a as a hockey fan. But they will get out of that quicker than if they keep them and are already heading in that direction... (sigh)

    Syd goes to Boston, they win the cup guaranteed. Boston would have to give away their future.

    Sorry but no! Absolutely not.
    That is our Captain and leader, and he is a Penguin!!
    If he wants to leave O will always support him.
    But this is Crosby's franchise in Pittsburgh, and has been for more than a decade.
    Maybe he is happy right where he is.
    I want tp rewpect hos wishes most of all though. He has earned the right to play how he wants when he wants, and where he wants.
    But I think he is happy right where he is amd I believe they can be very competitive thos year. Go look how many times the Penguins have beat team at the top of the rankings
    If we can pull out those wins more regularly, even against teams lower in the standings. And stick to playing together as a unit, their is a ton of potential for them!
    Sorry but I jave seen to much amazing play this season that seems to have neen missing a bit in some years past. I'm just happy to see them out their playing as a unit so smoothly. I hope we can grab onto that and keep it going strong!!!

    Why does Sid need to go...Trade Malkin..he needs to go..and Letang..wtf...he should retire. Yes, he is still good, but he is broken. Pens need players that they can count on all the time, not only some of the time..

    3 or 4 years? The ONLY reason He would ever retire is if he skates like a turtle..which is why Jagr had to leave the league. When Crosby becoes too slow, then he will retire, but I think he will play until he is 44 or 45.

    why are people going through this much trouble to talk ab this dumb shit? Crosby has 3 cups already thats more than what anyone can accomplish in this lifetime. Playing for a different team would diminish his legacy. I am not even a pens fan but it seems wrong to have these discussions

    Absolutely! Every team should consider trading their aging superstars for picks or prospects. This is a proven method for rebuilding quickly and avoiding years of mediocrity - a situation the Penguins have been experiencing for the past few seasons.

    I mean besides Croaby himself saying he doesn't want to go anywhere else, How good of a return are we really talking for him if you send him to a contending team? I am tired of all the analysts and insiders saying the penguins should trade Guentzel or Crosby because of the big return they could bring and help fast track the rebuild and then not providing any example of what they think Boston, Colorado, etc would have to send back to clear necessary cap space and attempt to provide fair value. Any slapdick on the internet can yell trade this player to X team but use your insider knowledge to put together such a trade package otherwise cut it out with 6 minute pieces that ultimately say you have no idea what that trade package would look like. If you want people to wrap their heads around it put together some options of what it could look like for both teams and then a discussion can actually be had.

      @@Rinalds91 If that is really something Sakic would do, love Makar but I dont think Sakic moves him. If that came across your desk as Dubas you would have to consider that. I just think that most contenders are not moving a piece like that even for Sid
