  • The Pittsburgh Penguins are on a three-game losing skid, capped with an embarrassing 6-1 loss to the Oilers, and are likely to miss out on a playoff spot. Is there blame to be placed on first-year general manager Kyle Dubas for not providing Pens legend Sidney Crosby with a better team to play with? 7-Eleven That's Hockey host Gino Reda discusses.

Nostalgia doesn't win in any professional league. This team isn't going to win another cup. It's the late lifecycle of a formerly great, then good and now declining team. They are old and slow and lack depth. The Karlsson trade seemed ok at the time and on paper and it hasn't worked. That's ok. Sacrificing the next ten years to 'throw good money after bad' doesn't make sense. Time to restock the cupboard and have Sid mentor the kids.

Traded away majority of draft choices at deadlines that have never worked once. Remember they won only one playoff series only to get completely manhandled in the next series.
Hired Keefe that has been out coached more often than not during the playoffs.

What has killed them besides hextall is their terrible drafting and trades. Not to mention locking letang and malkin to long deals with NMCs into their 40s. But I think it’s stupid how many analysts cry for Sidney Crosby to be traded. As if it weren’t his own decision to stay or leave. But most of the players on the team are coming to end of their careers and fresh blood is needed. Dare I say it, a trade to a contender would not be outta the question? A place where his talents could be used to help another team win a cup. Many players have done this so that team they played for all their career have a chance to rebuild and not try a short term fixed to make playoffs and hope to win a cup!

  • @stevencooke6451

I thought the Pens situation was pretty hopeless coming into the season. Then Dubas picked up Karlsson, but it doesn't change the fact that this is a very old talent thin team. It is a waste having Crosby on the team. I think they should have persuaded him and Malkin to accept a trade and pile up prospects as well as some cheaper veterans to help move the team forward. As much as I hate Corey Perry and given what happened in Chicago he might have been able to work with younger players--I do hear he's a good teammate.
If they keep Crosby and Malkin next year they will continue to be a terrible team with one of the greatest of all time pushing a rock up a hill for them.

As a Penguin fan, I entirely disagree with this take on Dubas.
Yes, he was brought in to put the best team around Crosby and, for that matter Malkin, with the belief that they could both still play at a high level.
Unfortunately, and again as a Pittsburgh Penguin fan, Malkin has fallen off of a cliff.
Rikard Rakell and Reilly Smith haven't performed up to snuff.
Our bottom six can't score a goal to save their lives (although Noel Acciari was one heck of a find).
On paper, with a team that has: Crosby, Malkin, Guenztel, Rust, Rakell, Smith, Letang, Karlsson and Peterson, there would be little doubt that they should be in the playoffs SO, in that regards, Dubas definitely did his job. What Dubas didn't take into account is just how slow, with a much younger NHL, the Penguins have become less Crosby, Rust and Guentzel on the top 6 and Karlsson and Letang on the back end.
So, no, this isn't Dubas' fault and, the reality of the situation is that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been the gold standard in the NHL for 17 seasons and, eventually, the music stops due to age and a loss of speed, which is what we are going thru now. As such, and as is the nature of the beast in any professional sports league, the team will have to be disassembled (via trades), where picks and prospects can be accumulated for the future.
Lastly, given that Crosby is the leader of all leaders, if he came to management and asked for a trade, say to the Avalanche, to play with his friend and fellow superstar, the Penguins would most certainly oblige. (Crosby, Guentzel, Malkin and Letang, at the end of the day --- just like Jagr --- are / is and always will be Pittsburgh Penguins, no matter who else they play for).
I get it, sour grapes from Toronto because the Penguins have one of the best GM's in the league. Rip on him all you want. The penguins future looks promising with Dubas where he is!

I think the last effort you make, is changing the head coach (and staff, looking at you Reirden). Put a system in place that best utilizes the talent that is there. If that means playing a slower paced game, so be it. Wins don’t need to be pretty.

There only 2 thing wrong with that Team: They're Old & Slow! That's it! If u heard this take on Graves on SDPN (I did 2 weeks ago)... it's Hockey journalism to generate views, and nothing else
A defensive specialist playing, up until last week, on the 2nd best defensive team in the league, then getting shitted on!

I mean he didn't correct the problems the team had going into this season, his "big" solution was an aging, injury prone D man coming off the back of ONE good year. They wanted to give the core one last go and I get that but it's over , trade away everything and rebuild, try and talk Crosby into a move and get something for him while he still has value.

There comes a point when every team needs to walk away from its ageing stars and rebuild anew. That time is now for the pens. Dubas made his shot with acquiring Karlsson, it hasn’t worked out. Trade Crosby, Malkin, Letang and Karlsson along with pretty much every other player not part of a potential new core. You could grab enough picks and prospects to have the rebuild done in 3/4 years at the most. Sure it sucks to end an era like this with a whimper but better to rip the bandaid off quick then suffer for the next 6-7!

At this point all you can do is initiate a rebuild and hope the your contracted players without no move clauses agree to go to contenders...

I have to disagree with Reda here, as have some of the commentators below....Of course, the superstars in any league want to have a storybook career, playing for one team, but it is very difficult for any team in any sport to remain competitive for 20 years....Gretzky, the greatest ever, was not an Oiler forever....Patrick Kane is playing in Detroit, and in football, iconic Players like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, both won Super Bowls with teams other than the ones for which they had Hall of Fame careers. Crosby is one of the greats - everyone loves him - but the Penguins should trade him. Let him win a Cup somewhere else.

There is nothing any GM could do that would have made the Penguins cup-contenders this season. They should have begun a mini rebuild 2 or 3 years ago, then they may have been able to provide Crosby with a contending team for the last couple years of his contract. At this point, I would trade everything away for youth, prospects and picks. Let Sid go, if he wants to try and still compete for another cup. I doubt it is possible to even do a mini-rebuild that would be successful in time where he is still able to play at his current level. The Pens are just too old and handcuffed by too many large contracts. Trading for Karlsson was flashy, but didn't address half of the issues that the team needed. Just like that dumb trade for Jeff Petry. Why are we trying to get older, when we should've been focusing on getting younger, faster and rebuilding?

TSN and Sportsnet analysts are never critical of Toronto. They're all Leafs homers. Every single one of them. They only criticize at the end of each season, but go in with full confidence the next year that the Leafs can do no wrong and this is their year. For about a week back in early February a few of them were actually questioning things, and suggesting maybe the Leafs shouldn't be buyers at the deadline. Then they won a few games and everyone was all in again on stocking up for a Cup run.
