In this episode Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, Easter eggs and history of Super Smash Bros on the N64. Super Smash Bros was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The game later followed by Super Smash Bros Melee for the GameCube, Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii, and Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. This first game is a crossover of Nintendo characters, including Mario, Donkey Kong, Link from The Legend of Zelda, Samus from Metroid, Ness from Earthbound, Captain Falcon from F-Zero, Yoshi, Kirby, Star Fox and Pikachu and Jigglypuff from Pokemon. Through our analysis of the game, its gameplay and its beta, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts we found and have its history explained.

For some reason, there seems to be a set pattern whenever nintendo chars are included:
1- Ask Shigeru Miyamoto, he says nope
2- Do it anyways
3- Show Shigeru
4-He says "lol k"
Eh, he probably says "Nope" to everything that includes Nintendo characters. We just haven't seen the ones where the developers were either double-rejected or just went "Welp, then I guess we're not gonna make it" after the first time.
Miyamoto in general doesn't seem to like ideas that aren't "original" enough, with Wolverine Publicity (adding in well-known characters for the purpose of maximizing profit) being one of them. Heck, his comment that the first build of _Paper Mario: Sticker Star_ felt too much like _The Thousand-Year Door_ is what motivated the game's producer to throw the game down the shitter despite there being much better directions for the game to have ultimately gone in (I do blame the producer for it, not Miyamoto, as the latter doesn't really have any authority over the spinoffs outside of the occasional suggestion). Even when he makes a sequel he tries to do *something* that makes it stand out, though it's typically limited to some brand-new powerup (I don't blame him for the whole _New Stagnant Mario Bros._ debacle either, as it's most likely a case of Nintendo's execs pushing for more sequels to make more money). Overall, this aversion towards sameness is admirable in concept, but oftentimes bothersome in execution.
One of the only things I agreed with him was with Hyrule Warriors

I'm not surprised Miyamoto rejected the idea of using Nintendo characters in Smash at first. Good on Sakurai and Iwata for going ahead with the idea anyway, they made my life better with that decision. :D

Guys, if you're talking about how sound effects were changed between version or between games, please actually let us hear the sounds instead of muffled sounds in the background while someone talks over them explaining that the sounds are different.

We could do that already, actually, through mods. Just recreate Captain Falcon's first moveset and readjust the Captain Falcon moves like his specials and some of his attack moves so they're dissimilar to his final moveset (he has quite a few moves that were changed in Melee, but two of his smash attacks in the first game are very unique) and create some unique moves for Pepsi-Man.
First time I've ever heard the potential sequel being called 5mash. I love it.

True but still I don't like how Miyamoto severely puts restrictions on what the team can use when working on Paper Mario, hence why we see 50 million Toads that look the same with a few selection of colors.

Another cool detail regarding the roster in Smash 64 is that a majority of them (minus Fox and Jigglypuff) team up in The Subspace Emissary: Mario with Kirby, Donkey Kong with Captain Falcon, Link with Yoshi, Samus with Pikachu and Luigi with Ness.
The fact that Shigeru initially rejected this concept makes me think that he lost his touch way sooner than the Wii era
Mike Ruelas Mario Galaxy was amazing though and isn't he working in super mario oddisey right now? Besides, he didn't reject the game, he rejected the idea of having Nintendo characters as the fighters, the game would probably still turned out great regardless. Man, everyone now wants to get mad at him for having strong ideas, but nobody seems to notice that whenever a developer chooses to do something against him, he is always willing to try and listen to them even if he doesn't like it initially, a lot of bosses would never allow something like that and yet he's now awful because he's not perfect?
Not William Magardician having those characters is not what made smash Brothers so great, its the fact that it has excellent gameplay and fighting mechanics. Having Nintendo characters is just a nice bonus

Debug Stage 2 (the weird-looking one) is still unironically one of my favorite stages in the series. I made sure to remake it right away in Brawl and 4.

I love this game, the cartoony sound effects and its sheer wonky-ness make it incredibly fun to me, even to this day. Mario Kart 64 falls under the same category in my opinion

. . . Playing Smash 64 when it was new with a bunch of friends in 8th grade feels like it was no time at all ago, yet Phantom Menace feels like it came out eons ago, when I was a little kid. But they were both at almost the exact same time... my brain's doing something funky there.

I will always LOVE Smash 64 just for how fun it was for me as a kid. Has it aged? Oh totally, but I still find a ton of fun whenever I go back to it. The game just has a charm I can't help but love. Maybe it's the cartoony and satisfying sound effects it has, I've always loved those sounds honestly.
Well, that was a very interesting video... This is just what I love about companies back then, the tech limitation caused developers to be craftier with how they presented content. Just amazing!

Jigglupuff's Japanese name 'Purin' is actually pronounced POO-reen, sounding like 'pudding' (especially if you pronounce it with a standard R like in Japanese as apposed to an English one) which is what purin is: a custard pudding. The announcer may pronounce the name as "purrin", but the Smash narrators tend to mispronounce names here and there.

Mystic Melody not impossible. Cloud was a dream character for many but due to only appearing on PlayStation we thought we'd never see the day. it's still possible.
Ganon Renzokuken Cloud has made a few appearances on Nintendo consoles and unlike Banjo, he's not owned by a first party company.

Did you know Captain Falcon is the best character in Smash series while Samus Aran is the worst.
That's because most characters are made to play like they play in their games, while Samus plays nothing like she does in her game, and Captain Falcon plays nothing like he does in his game.
