I think it's important to not label anything "dragon" anymore. I hope the devs realise that since they are done with the dragon cycle, they ought to do other things. I'd love for the deep sea monster to be a Kraken / C'thulhan creature, probably related to the Largos. Could make for an interesting story.

While I can agree with that entirely.
My thought is we’ve only ever seen elder dragons or their minions that take the form of smaller versions of themselves or an extension of themselves.
especially for some thing like cantha, why not lean into “there are regular dragons” they don’t need to be these mighty world ending things but you can definitely lean into the mythology that’s there. Soowon was an entirely different type of dragon than what we’ve seen in the game thus far, being an eastern style dragon rather than a western style. Old world mythology even mixes sea serpents leviathan’s(not good example because we have them) and some dragons into a kind of overall name for these big monstrosities. one persons dragon is another persons kraken is another persons world serpent.
Edit: not saying that I’d actually like to see that but there are regular dragons in mythology and it reflected. More than with kuunavang and the salt sprays that is. Haha.

@@novusnocturnm Remember Balthazar? He was such a great character, and I think a big portion of that, stems from his alignment (Lawful Evil) in contrast to every single Elder Dragon sharing "Chaotic Neutral".
All I want is an antagonist with a fresh alignment, because the same old apex predator villain won't work for me in the future, because it's been done so much and it doesn't always make for impactful story beats.

@@qwerty222999 again. Not trying to disagree I think a Cthulhu romp would work well too, but if they wanted to keep in line with the established lore of the deep sea “dragon” and then move on, there’s still a lot of room to play with. Expand on the kirnin? Think a dark Haku from spirited away.
Beyond that. Balthazar is definitely chaotic neutral in this case. His actions were selfish and for his own gain, not the good of the world or done to live up to a moral code or divine domain. Enacting a plan of revenge because he threw a fit over the other gods lack of action is definitely a chaotic neutral action to take.
He himself may be a god of war and battle, but his personality and mental state is not the same as his alignment or domain.

@@novusnocturnm "A lawful evil villain methodically takes what he wants within the limits of his code of conduct without regard for whom it hurts."
Balthazar being lawful in this case, is displayed in how he makes deals and keeps them, specifically with Rytlock, when he opens a portal out of the mists for him, when he could've just killed him with no repurcussion and later when he offers you the fray of battle, when you ask for it during the Primordus scene.
The Elder Dragons are chaotic neutral, because they take what they want for their own benefits, with no regard for whom it effects, though not with the intention of destruction. They wake up, eat magic and go back to sleep.

We never saw what Soo-Won's minions would look like since she never made any. But what if she did?
Perhaps Elder dragons passively have to create minions, even against their own will. Perhaps she spawned these minions while staying in the deep parts of the Unending Ocean. She never wanted them and gave the denizens of the Unending Ocean the Orbs to protect them. Maybe the monster near the reactor was one she recently spawned. That would explain the octopus statue in the reactor at least.

The fact that Kuunavang was Soo-Won’s “champion” strongly implies that she was more than just a mere minion, as all the other champions are. Even Ryland and joined Brahm had some measure of autonomy.
Technically the other 5 EDs are soo-won’s “minons”, her direct creations. But most life on tyria is the indirect creation of the EDs.
The relationship between Aurene and Skyscales is more ambiguous than simply a dragon minion. Maybe there is something like that with Soo-Won and Saltsprays.

See, this is the kind of thing I've been looking forward to. I talked in another comment on your EoD story review video about how disappointed I was that Soo-Won didn't turn out to be the DSD that we all thought she would be, but after thinking about it, I kinda like this story decision even more. I love that we're back to square one on this mystery, that we oddly know even LESS about what was driving away the krait, quaggan, and largos than we did before the expansion.
And most of all, I love this feeling that we've been completely wrong the entire time since Season 2. I love this feeling that we've been mislead by the tiny amount of lore we thought we knew, because the characters logically assumed it was all dragon related. We knew there was a water dragon, so scary water stuff had to be the dragon, right?
Nope. We solve the dragon, and we're left with..... Fear. Uncertainty. A complete blindness to what may be actually out there. This is EXACTLY how I want to feel thinking about a monster in the depths. We know nothing, and we should be afraid of that.
I may not have really liked what they did with Soo-Won, but this amount of hype definitely makes up for it. I'm ready to be afraid.

  • @WordsOfTheTeacher
    @WordsOfTheTeacher Před 2 lety +12

I LOVE your theory about it being a failed proto dragon, I hadn't considered that. I think given a few years and maybe an expansion dealing with other stuff in between this could be good, almost like nostalgia of the original dragons without entirely reopening that can of worms.
However, one idea I REALLY like and what I came into this video thinking, is that it's a Lovecraftian monstrosity. Somehow she was able to combat it, but even Soo-Won doesn't know what it was. She didn't make it, it somehow got here from beyond... but the most important thing is, *maintain the mystery*!! Once something becomes known and explained, it's not Lovecraftian anymore. The point of being that is to be so cosmically horrific and unknowable that learning more only sends you deeper into madness. I love the idea that we fight its armies, and find a way to cut it off from Tyria thus saving this world, but we are wholly unable to kill it. We're safe, but it's still out there... somewhere.

Better yet, imagine if it becomes something in the background that they breadcrumb every now and then, and like a year or two from now, sudden massive attack! Like the LA tidal wave art. It could end with the commander essentially having to cut some sort of deal with it or just making the coasts defendable because the commander claims they couldn't even make a dent in it. Keep the mystery but relegated to the background basically.

@@MrHawkelement I'd like if it, say, this were to become an expansion's plot - the main villain that's an actual character is some kind of general, or avatar puppeted by the creature to interact with us. Maybe just a cutscene of catching a glimpse of it deep in the ocean depths is as close as we ever get

I've not paid enough attention to what the Largos NPC says during the event to note if there's any real hints. But, the skeleton sure seems to be similar, if not a match. I think it's quite likely that Soo-Won was the "creator god" and her twin in the deep is the "destroyer god" of Tyria. Since Anet decided to "retcon" the dragon cycle from a force of nature into ostensibly a creation myth, I think a dualistic cosmology is the way to go in order to keep Tyria a bit more interesting than "Aurene controls everything now". At the end I can envision Aurene, now controling all of what we call "dragon magic", entering into an eternal battle against what you might call the "antidragon-magic". Neither side can win, it just carries on forever. Gets rid of Elder Dragon magic, neatly ties up the deus-ex machina that is Aurene, and also deals with the top-level lore established way back before GW2 released.

First off, that ambient inquest conversation is really cool with how they wander around the room to contextually comment of things.
Second, I think the DSM could be a good season 6 story hook. They already set up the story line of finding alternative power sources, and talked about sea floor thermal energy as one of their current power sources. Seems like a good spot for attempted further expansion to uncover something nasty.
An interesting question is what the underwater content would be like. Could they make a compelling map that is 100% underwater? I think it would be really cool if they built tech to have bubbles of normal movement zones under the “water level plane”. You could have zones of normal exploration with normal combat on to of a swimming around above those bubbles experience. Turtles walking on the floor could get some use too.

I figured I'd mention this purely because it came up, but I did for the briefest moment have a ponder as to whether Kanaxi may have been a void demon, or a deep-sea horror. While I'm more inclined to move away from this shift, the idea that it loops around, and we end up back at DSD with it meaning Deep Sea Demon does entertain me.
I would also like to point out as a very minor point to go with your Jade Maw comments. Didn't Cobiah Marriner encounter a Maw in Orr or a Leviathan that was referred to as the Maw (I forget which) just before Zhaitan awoke?
While its easily possible its not related it does at least briefly make me ponder about the Deep-Sea Monster and if it was interested in what the Elder Dragons were doing, even if its minions were themselves capable of being corrupted.
The only other tentacle-based thoughts I really get are via Abaddon and the concepts from the old Arachnia stuff. But outside of it opening up the idea of other insanely powerful beings I don't really see there being a link.

WP touched on a theory about that, why the Elder Dragons congregated in Tyria. The theory being that during their last rise the Seers placed a massive amount of magic into the at the time whole Bloodstone. The Elder Dragons were unable to break the Bloodstone to consume their magic and it was the last bit of magic they could, but there are allegedly 4 chunks and a keystone. I theorize maybe they had one for each of the dragons to be interested in. I think the Keystone was in the Fire Island Chain where Primordus liked to hang out. One was in the Shiverpeaks where Jormag liked to hang out. One was in the Maguuma for Mordremoth. Zhaitan rose near the Bloodstone Caves in Sparkfly. Soo-Won was the only one that seemed to be able to resist the inevitable corruption of their kind and went elsewhere.

  • @pkmnswampmaster
    @pkmnswampmaster Před 2 lety +1

One thing I have been thinking about Soo-Won not having minions and being a good Elder dragon is that we now the void was taking over her, she let Joon keep her in the reactor to "modulate" the magic that was shed over the years by Soo-Won.
But this is only something that happened in recent years, the dragon cycle was a thing for millenia and we know that the dragons went back to hibernate until the magic levels in Tyria where high enough that it made them wake up and repeat the cycle.
So I wonder if Soo-Won had gone mad before and only recovered her senses when the cycle restarted and her magic was low enough that the void in it wouldn't make her go berserk.
This made me come up with a few theories:
    1. Soo-Won made minions in the previous cycles and some might have survived, that skeleton at Joon's mansion could be from a minion of Soo-Won that may have found her by straying to far away from the depths it was created to inhabit.
    2. At the start of each cycle, Soo-Won would try to eliminate her own minions to minimize the damage before she loses herself again.
    3. While Soo-Won was hibernating some deep sea creatures where feeding on the magic she was slowly sheding, this could cause those creatures to mutate into horrors corrupted by the void and/or Soo-Won's own Water magic.
All of this is to say that there are many ways that the devs can tell the story of this tentacled horror without feeling like a retcon, the devs can finally move past the Elder dragon storyline but this doesn't mean we are going to pretend like it never happened. As long as there is a good explanation that either ties it to the dragons or justifies the lack of relation to them. Also let's not forget what happened at the start of IBS, Bangar used Aurene as an excuse to agitate many Charr, what if we have another Bangar-like character? The Asura are funny but let's not forget that they could easily decide that without Primordus there is no need to cooperate with the other races, what if the human gods return now that there are no evil elder dragons? Or would they stay away just because of Aurene's presence? What about that land mass to the west of the map?
    The posibilities are endless

I'm honestly divided about the path I desire GW2 to take now:
    - Eitheir into the Mists which predate Tyria after all (Where are the original Dessa and Arkk? So many Fractals with Unknowns/Mysteries that should be further studied, and yet we only get the rewards and that's it... Heck, the Void still exist, but can it interact with the Mists?)
    - And then we have the "Depths of Tyria", (where the Asura originally lived before running from Primordus) and now the "Sea Abyss" (where this supposed creature wanders...?)

Honestly i really wish they simply made a GW3.
GW2's entire thing was the Elder Dragons and they fully stopped all of them, just adding a new enemy that was barely mentioned, never implied and now everyone has to pretend it was a thing from the start is very very stupid.

@@AzureRoxe The Mists don't necessarily mean a antagonist itself, and definitely nothing new at all (they have been present on GW1 as well)
The original fourth expansion of Guild Wars (which ended up scrapped and reused to do the "Eye of the North") was focused on the Mists, on travelling further and deep and find a iconic, "clockwork" land, lost within time populated with folks from past (dead) and future (yet to be born)

I don't think it is likely that it'll be directly related to her (like a progeny or failed creation) however since I think that anet must be desperate to move away from elder dragons at this point.

  • @malaketh

Maybe this Deep Sea Creature is an entity that originates the Elder Dragon corrupted minions. Su Won creates and raises the Elder Dragons, but as the void begins to take them, this mysterious entity gifts them with the knowledge to create… or corrupt life into their own minions, as a means of staving off their own corruption.
Unable to beat Su Won, it maybe set in motion the Elder Dragon crisis. Playing the long game to do away with its rival, who was taking away the magic.
This could also link in with Abbadon (whose minions also underwent a drastic transformation) and his desire to share magic with mortals. Either as a threat he was trying to prepare the world for or as something that corrupted the former god of secrets, maybe into its own minion? I’m kind of spitballing here.

Let's get a whole rework to underwater combat making it clean and as fluid as ground combat that really expands on the uniqueness of that branch of this game. It would be amazing to have a map that is mostly underwater and the Depths are as large as Verdant brink. We just need it to feel more compelling for the larger player base. I like underwater combat a lot but I know I'm not everyone. This could add so much to the turtle's ability to fight underwater and even add more loot game if we get a swathe of underwater gear so we can have different builds for underwater combat that transitions seamlessly.

Tentacles and water, sounds an awful lot like Abaddon. Honestly, most of Abaddon's lore seems to hint at him knowing of the ED and wanting to stop them/setting up the stage for gw2.
Well, there's the whole difference between Abaddon/Dhuum and the other gods. They seem to be ¨native¨ to Tyria which the other gods aren't if I understand the wiki right. (Although in Dhuum's case I'm not sure if he is a true death god or more like a powerful being(like a demon or the eater of souls) simply taking up the mantle of death god a bit like the other gods or Grenth after him who's more of a ruler of the land of the dead than a god.).

Maybe the creature the Inquest caught was actually a leviathan, because Anet has had that leviathan model when the game first came out (I think that's like some of the first model shaman datamined)
Also, what about the JADE MAW? The "Dragonjade" Cantha now uses is just jade infused with dragon magic, so the jade itself caused by the jade wind is still a mystery. In GW1 we know Shiro absorbed the magic from Dwayna to caused the jade wind, so that power will be more likely from the mist (or dare I say, "godlike") so when the jade maw was seemingly born out of that jade, what do we call it as? If the jade maw was a minion, having a jade related DSM would be great.
Also, reminds me of Dessa's fractals. The solid ocean fractal, in it you can see tentacals under the boss arena! Spooky right?

What ever it is, it's power level is somewhere between Elder Dragons and Karka. It stayed away from the Dragon but managed to displace the Karka, although I don't know what the timeline of Karaka appearing is. I thought they turned up after the games launch as the latest species to be run out of the ocean? Quagan and Krait having been driven out long before? The implication to me is that the Karka put up more of a fight before loosing so maybe it struggled with them a little?
Makes sense, Karka are kinda beastly and not to be messed with, but stronger it is.
I just hope they don't pull the old "Oh its even worse than an Eldar dragon!" It can still be an interesting threat without the needless escalation of stakes.

1- Its some kind of demon, Not the first time we deal with them but they are very much still a mistery. Dark, evil and powerfull, also unknown enough the writers could do anythng with them.
2- Soo Won isnt an actual elder dragon, as the mother creator maybe she doesnt count as an elder dragon because she is something else, something more. Or perhaps she does count as an ED BUT the terror from the deep is some kind of precursor to the ed's and the other dragons dont know about it, or at least aurene doesnt.
3- Its a part or half of Soo Won, maybe the hunger part of her that is prevelent in the other dragons and for a long time she kept it under control but when she left the depths to aid cantha the evil side got free and started wrecking havoc.
    Edi:
4- Perhaps somethign new from the mists, maybe some kthuluesque creature from the mysts. Presumably Soo Won is from the mysts and so are the gods it would be interesting to meet something else from there. The mysts are common thread in the lore and maybe we will start seeing more from there.

Subject Alpha seems to be missing experiementation from Soo-won afterall? Perhaps this creature would have been a lot worse with all 6 elements and become that of Void ( a subject gamma?). Or Perhaps they were trying to produce their own entity similar to aurene that could filter magic?
Was their experimentation towards Scarlett's greater goal with dragon magic?
