I Sewed myself the Strawberry Dress (But Made it Regency) | Red Dress from Emma 2020 | VA Mesh Dress

  • In this video, I draft a regency dress pattern using the draping method on a home made dress form, digitize the embroidery on computer software, stitch it out on an embroidery machine using dissolvable interfacing/stabilizer, then sew up the dress. I also show the undergarments involved with traditional regency dress. I also partake in a photoshoot with some very talented artists.

I love how you approach a project, it's like shadowing a seasoned seamstress transported to the present day-- you're so skilled , and so straightforward in seeking out the most direct way of achieving the historical effects you want, which is nice, because the focus is on the most beautiful aspects of the finished piece. It's really helpful to see someone saying unambiguously that they hate making undergarments. It just increases the likelihood of me starting to cut out more patterns, and make a design I'm excited about a reality, rather than cajoling myself into an enthusiasm I don't feel for less essential processes. (Though I absolutely get the calming aspect of sewing by hand-- this is just a personal gripe.) I often speculate what a 1540s tailor might have done with, say, the synthetics now seen as cheap and ugly, and try to look at new materials with a fresh eye-- I think it's only occasionally you see someone who makes something really transcendent, like Iris van Herpen, that lives up to the potential of the methods and materials available today. So anyway, thanks for your blog and your channel, they're both practically helpful and genuinely inspiring.

Thank you so much Marta! I am very honest about how I don't like making things that go underneath and won't show. I really do only have so much free time and would rather spend that time doing my favorite parts of each project. (That being said, I do love making men's shirts; not sure what that's about). But yes! Please do treat yourself to the parts that you enjoy doing!
I had to look up Iris van Herpen - she is spectacular. Thank you for sharing!

Beautiful! The color is gorgeous on you. You make it look so easy when I know it isn’t so simple.

Wow I love the embroidery. And the drawstrings are so clever. I guess I never thought about how they got gathered cuffs without elastic!! And you are absolutely right, the photos are 100% worth it. Thanks for sharing!

Very impressive as I have seen this dress in the V&A. Thank you for making this video as Regency-era fashions are one of my favourite styles.
