In this video, I go into the making of the francaise from this famous drawing/painting of Madam de Pomadour (pastels and gouche) by Maurice-Quentin Delatour. It lives in the Lourve, in a very empty part of the building, but I had the joy of going and seeking it out a few years back. It was worth the wandering! In this video, I go into the procuring of the fabric, the features that make up my ideal robe a la francaise, and then I go into making it!

The fact that you managed to get this dress to fit you perfectly by fitting it by yourself still kind of blows my mind. I mean, 18th century dressmaking techniques were developed by professional mantua makers who were fitting gowns on their clients. These fashions were never meant to be recreated by a lone home sewer.

She’s a trained anesthesiologist at a prestigious hospital, a successful CZcamsr, a highly acclaimed sewist and costumer, a wife AND a mother! At this point, she should just teach us all how to win at life 😅

I'm usually a silent viewer, but seeing the comments regarding pronounciation on your instagram break my heart. I enjoy your content (dare I say free content on top of your work as a medical professional) for its whimsy and unpretentious approach paired to your skill and knowledge. I'm a non native English speaker and I never had any issue understanding your pronounciation. I used to be patient with people correcting me. But the kind of people that correct my pronounciation, more often than not, cut me mid sentence without the chance to resume. Language should not be used to patronize and humiliate. Language is fluid, and while your pronounciation is part of your story, your work speaks for itself.
I just filled with admiration for your skills and ability to translate pictures of elaborate gowns into such things of sheer beauty, recording the process understating the time and skills required on these wonderful creations
I'm a non native speaker too and agree with you. Usually things like that is just envy because they only know one language and the one they mock know several, so ignoring is the best policy.

I agree: there's a 'genre' of family portraits with each person engaged in their favorite activity: one with golf clubs, another with a tennis racket, etc. Dr and Mr Sewstine as well as Baby Sewstine probably have too many interests to be depicted in one canvas but it would be fascinating: dogs must be included, of course.
In Russian we say "measure seven times and cut once" and I feel like it's very true for such precious pieces of fabric like this one. Absolutely gorgeous final result!!

another amazing thing I noticed-- your linen cottagecore dresses are really growing more and more beautiful as the linen gets more lived-in and loses the new stiffness. they look so wonderful!
Cutting into fabric is a process! Taking time to cut it and simply just keeping it on its bolt and petting it because you are too cared to cut it is part of the progress xD

I’m just at the beginning of the video, so I can’t comment yet on the amazingness of the gown 🙂, but I cannot believe that someone criticized her pronunciation of the French words. It’s really good for someone that is not a native French speaker and completely understandable! Perfect pronunciation takes years of immersion in a foreign language. I’m living in a French city for nearly 10 years, am pretty gifted for learning new languages, and native French speakers still hear that I have a slight accent, because I started learning French in my 20s. Ignore the bigoted snobs, Christine!! ♥️ P.S. The gown is just amazing and I adore how you “modernized” at the photo shoot! 😂 I got emotional when you got dressed. I’m so happy for you!

Don't worry about pronunciation of French! Even the French try to correct other native French speakers.

@@firegodessreiko Regret is not the word I would look for in this situation. There is no indication of the exhilaration/intensity of the moment. And anyway I usually don’t have regrets after I do cut it.

I watched this video with my child (14) who is not into costuming or historical costume at all and they couldn’t tear their eyes from it. You are just so genuine and relatable, charismatic and admirable without being braggadocios and absolutely beautiful. I have to admit, i really like the lace in this slightly darker color! I think its even prettier than the original like this, even though its probably not historically accurate. But, of course, amazing dress as always!

Can we just appreciate that you are a very busy Dr who celebrated making partner at your hospital, by buying this fabric and creating this incredible dress? To me, the sewing and handywork helps Sophie to be high achieving as a doctor. I notice, that when I sew, my brain goes "up on a cloud" and I think 3-dimentional, get peace and I feel fulfilled. It is interesting, that in the time of computers and fast, faster, the fastest :), Sophie takes time for every detail. And the result speaks for itself: Exquisite. The ladies used to have a lady-in-the waiting who helped them dress.

I was getting strong Breakfast at Tiffany’s vibes when she started doing your makeup there. Not sure why, but you had an Audrey Hepburn-ish air about you. Your robe is gorgeous, and you are gorgeous in it as well. Such skillful work. Your prior two practice dresses were gorgeous as well and clearly prepared you well for this one. Thanks for sharing your process with us. You inspire me to finish my vintage pattern 1940’s shirt dress. I got stuck on the sleeves, but seeing all the time and effort you’ve put into yours inspires me to put in some more time and effort on getting the sleeves drafted, mock-ed up and finished.
I'm a spinner and while I normally dive headlong into new fiber I have a couple that I look at and pet and I'm afraid to actually spin, so I totally get you on the hesitation to cut your dream fabric. I had a lush forest green cotton velvet that it took me months to get the nerve to cut, but it was so worth it when I wore the dress. Nothing as glorious as yours but it made me happy.

For whitening vintage lace, soak it in milk for at least a minimum of 4 hours. The longer it soaks, the whiter it gets.

I have just watched your photo shoot video & had to re visit this dress again! The lace in the sleeves is just to die for. I know you want to add more decorations to the dress, but I think it would be lovely to honour this dress in the painting by leaving it just as it is. It’s simplicity allows the fabric & lace to shine.
