The Voice of ABC '89 - Ernie Anderson at Work

- Ernie Anderson recording promos at ABC's post production 6 on their Prospect Studios lot in Hollywood, the same lot where I started working a decade later. Ernie was my mentor, but I think that I made him nervous during this shoot. Ernie was definitely a one-of-a-kind VO talent and was the father of Paul Thomas Anderson.
I hung out w/Ernie starting in '89, and he told me about his one big acting job in Hollywood, appearing in a GUNSMOKE episode in the mid 60's (he said that he hated his performance). I've never been able to find the episode, but you can hear an improvised interview. that Ernie recorded w/the cast at the following youtube clip. It's very funny! -Mark Howell, VO Artist (HowellFilm@gmail.com)
• Ghoulardi (Ernie Ander... - Zábava
I was the one who hired Ernie and got him a long term exclusive contract. I forget how brutal this work was - he was The Master
Wow!
Yes, he is fabulous!! Wonderful old school delivery and pipes!
Didn't he also do voice over work on NBC too?
You're a fucking liar. I hired Ernie.
My favorites were his Ford commercials. I'd be doing the dubs and sighing at that super sexy sounding voice.
Growing up in the 80s, Ernie was the "voice" then. I don't think there is another voice that instantly brings back the feels the way that Ernie Anderson's does. It's just special.
Absolutely agree! VO artists are often sadly overlooked... Ernie's voice left an indelible imprint on my teenage brain.
I saw two of those episodes. Roseanne would love Fred Thompson now if he was still alive.
They should have kept his "What a piece of s***" for the promo for most of these hokey sitcoms.
To say he was the Don LaFontaine of his time might be a misnomer. Ernie was the last of the big network guys who hung their hat in a post room like that for ten hours a day. Danny Dark was another. I heard Ernie was making $2M in the 70s and early 80s...so I can only imagine what he was making toward the end of his life. A pleasure to hear...always.
Wow! I'm just 47, and I remember listening to him on ABC when I was a kid. And he was already an Icon in the industry. I have a Whole new respect for what he did for all those years. Unbelievable.
Same age as you "NOW". Me too! I use to have him saying
"8 Central and Mountain" stuck in my head. 😂
I remember Ernie’s narration for such miniseries epics like The Thorn Birds and North and South! It was great growing up in the 80’s!!!!
Everybody in Hollywood was in North And South.
Ernie Anderson, Danny Dark, Casey Kasem, and Mark Elliot. The voices of 1980s television. What iconic voices!!!!
ALL Gone and no to replace them
The rich, eloquent voice of Ernie outshines all others! He could mesmerize you just saying Good Morning!!
"What a nauseous fuckin' piece of shit." Gold.
That voice brings back memories of watching abc network in the 80s
It's always amazing how professional a recording sounds in its final cut, and how unprofessional it often sounds in the recording process.
Reminds me of how many movies look great onscreen but behind the scenes, people are like "the whole set was held together with duct tape and we all had the flu"
Ernie Anderson will always be the voice of ABC to me! Nice find, thanks for sharing.
Hands down my favorite CZcams video of all time.
Seen February 12, 2019. Hard to believe it's been 22 years since one of the finest voiceover gentleman left the earth.
Fred Silverman, at ABC at the time made him a household voice!!! The rest is history. This format is history for television, and future generations to come.
Mr. Hahn
Los Angeles California
It's amazing that someone had the foresight to record this and keep it. A fleeting glimpse at a rare behind the scenes voiceover on period correct machinery.
I can totally appreciate his diligence and professionalism. When you have an iconic voice it’s not easy to just wing it. He’s the voice of ABC.
I now love this man more than I did. One of the greatest voices in television, and he felt about this job the way I would at this point.
I can watch this guy work all day long.
This goes to prove that everyone, even highly compensated VO artists bitch about parts of their jobs that they hate. Ernie was a legend and certainly one of the big voices of my childhood.
This is a GREAT inside look at the golden age of big-time network voiceovers, circa 1980's. It takes me back to my own days of working frequently with crusty yet lovable Ernie as studio manager of Mel Blanc Audiomedia, Beverly Hills. Before there was Don Lafontaine, Ernie was the king. He wanted no part of on-camera commercial fame. "I don't want to float in the crapper as the Tidy Bowl man!" he told me. Awesome post - thanks! Chuck McKibben voice artist/VO coach, voiceoverisland.
Now, I get to see the face behind the voice of many promos on ABC, from the 70s to the 90s. Ernie Anderson. He's right up there with Johnny Olson.
"What a nauseous fucking piece of shit." *drops paper* I love this man :)
I love how he gets so disgusted with the material so quick. I wish they would do a feature length documentary on this guy's outtake a la Winnebago Man.
Thank you for letting me relive my teen years in 5 minutes. He was the greatest voice ever!
Awesome! I got to watch Ernie and crew work in this room several times during the 80's. Just incredible. Brings good memories.
Loved watching this! Always wondered what Ernie Anderson looked like. I love how he gestures as he announces. And I remember these voiceovers. But man, what schlocky TV. Imagine having to watch those clips over and over. And over.
Really it’s madness baby!
Ernie's always been inspiring. I still get this video out from time to time for therapy.
This is precious. Love the process. Guys like Stu Tracy (KPHO-TV 5, PHX), Alec Webb (Maryland Public Television) and Ernie helped this stuttering, Southern boy with his speech growing up in the early-80's.
People think this job is simple, but this video shows how tough it is to even do voice over work.
I know how he feels. Doing this working is like recording a song at times. Only those who have worked in the business can relate. :)
You can hear every cigarette that Ernie ever smoked.
Great observation I grew up in the 80s too I was born March 1978 in NYC my childhood and teens calling I miss Ernie too 😿🌹💞🎆🎇💞😘
This is brilliant. Seeing the rawness of it all. Thank you for posting!
That is the voice I associate the most with ABC and have been imitating him for years without knowing who he is. One of the greatest voice-overs in history. I actually practice this voice saying stuff like "At 8:30, Latka goes crazy on Taxi, and at 9, Vegas. It all happens here Friday nights on ABC"
Me too I used to mimic when I was in school during reading classes.
Love Ernie. Always did. Funny how easy it'd be to do that voice over with Pro Tools today. Ernie was great!
Oddly enough, pro-tools appears to have been invented around the time of the video, 1989-ish.
Actually, Pro Tools wouldn't be much help in this case. Ernie was having trouble because there's too much copy than easily fits between the dialogue of the video segments. That's a problem because the promo is already cut to its proper length; they can't open up any space. And they can't change the copy on their own; they'd have to get a copywriter to do it. 😉
Love his voice ,brings back so many memories ,thank you
Fascinating! The final product always made this seem so easy, but the process looks like it could be brutal at times.
The voice of my childhood…. Thank you for posting this 🖤
tim conway jr got me hip to ernie and his former sidekick brian whitman can really sound like him...and since i was born in la county in 1982...i grew up with him on ch 7...mannnn i miss the old skool guys ...
"The LOVE Boat"
Who's The Boss - Ode To Angela
The Wonder Years - Square Dance
Rosanne - Let's Call It Quits
Have Faith - The Window
Thirtysomething - Courting Nancy
From the ABC Television Studios in Hollywood, California.
One of the sounds of my youth! So great to finally put a face with the name.
What a neat behind-the-scenes piece! I'm 40-something and had never seen the man behind the voice until now! :)
This is so great to see who used to do these recordings back then! I remember his voice even after all these years!
oddly enough, this reminds me of a paul thomas anderson movie
TheZurul that's his son
That's why he said "funnily enough".
Wow, crazy cool to see this! The show I most remember this voice from was America's Funniest Home Videos.
Yes Ernie Anderson was on the late Bob Saget editions of AFV. RIP Ernie Anderson and RIP Bob Saget.
This is awesome! Seeing a legend at work...
@VoiceoverIsland That's awesome, Ernie had a voice that could cut glass. We don't seem to have those anymore, everyone sounds too smooth and nice. I remember as a kid in the 80s, Ernie doing the ABC voice overs. Like the ABC Sunday Night Movie for JAWS, or SUPERMAN. Now THAT'S an announcer.
He and the iconic 1982 "Star Tunnel" intro made every single Sunday night Movie mean something important!
Iconic golden voice.I grew up hearing that beautiful voice on ABC in the 1970s and the 1980s. Whenever I think of ABC,I remember his voice. He had a great voice.I always wondered as a kid,Who's voice is that??? I finally know the mystery. ❤
I have no idea why this voice popped into my head at 5AM lol ....I typed in voice of ABC in the 80s in a google search.. and this video popped up. ( internet is amazing) Thanks Ernie for the memories!
Ernie was sadly took away from us in February 1997 😭😢☖⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘
Somehow I always knew this wouldn't be easy. and he always made it sound easy, but as we can see its wasn't , he was a legend, thanks for sharing your voice Ernie anderson, R.I.P...
The greatest ever, bar none.
"From KUSA in Denver, This is NIIINE NOOZ, number one in Coloradoo!!!"
He was the best! The voice of my 1970s childhood! He could build enthusiasm and anticipation like no other!
Ghoulardi Lives!
Ernie was also the VO person for ABC7 Los Angeles back in the day.
Yes and Ernie's last VO work was at KABC-TV before he left.
i am a cleveland guy and love this..
thank for the post!!
a rare gem from 30 years ago.
4:31 4:49 what a piece of shit!
promo for Tuesday May 2, 1989.
But surely it had to have been recorded AT LEAST 2 days in advance, but I think that no less than a week would be more accurate, even though I wasn't born until 8 years later, nor do I have any experience in that field.
This is gold!
This was fantastic!
We earlier knew Ernie Anderson in Cleveland on WJW TV. He played the character Ghoulardi which often included Tom Conway (Tim was his stage name in Hollywood).
I love how everytime he was done he said "fuckin piece of shit" and sometimes it got recorded in the promos lmfao Ernie was a legend!
He said "What a piece of shit."
Looking at this, I am reminded of how an ocean of paperwork made production facilities (radio or television) look sloppy as all get-out.. : D Digital workstations, and software like VCreative, have been a godsend...
This is awesome! Classic! I was a freshman in high school
Ernie Anderson (ABC)Danny Dark (NBC)Don Robertson (CBS Sports)
Chuck Reilly (CBS) for their dramas during the late '8 and early-mid '90s.
Ernie Anderson, the longtime voice of ABC, also Ghoulardi- of course, he was followed by Bill Ratner, whom we all know as Flint on the original G.I. Joe series.
I think Ernie Anderson and Danny Dark were the best network promo announcers.
I was thinking the same thing. It's just hilarious to hear it over the "Tonight" graphics. Hahaha.
this was cool to watch
Wow linear recording! I'm glad I'm a VO in a different time.
There's nothing like getting multiple (analog) machines and devices to synchronize and play nice with each other. 😉 What a time it was.
Sooo good.The best
The Lady on the far right, Engineer Deena Flowers, R.I.P.
Legend.
The part where it is that Mr. Ernie Anderson curses-- I don't blame him for cursing, actually, because, IMO, he had a great point about how awful some of those shows were then.
"8 Central and Mountain" used to always be stuck in my head. 😂
recognizable voice back then
Thats the way it was done. It's called WORK. And doing the voice over several times is what's called practice makes perfect. And what we don't see here is how many times he likely did things in ONE take. But that would be too boring for us to watch 20+ years later now would it.
That man was a MASTER of his craft. He paved the way for today's computer edited piece meal assembly production methods todays quickie generation enjoys today.
and no, its called voice over, not work, stop trashing on today's world, buddy.
no, it wouldn't be boring to watch, too, now fucking would it? there's nothing wrong with being quick,
“Who the f-- wrote this?” 😂 That was a lot to cram into one teaser.
I loved his voice and appreciated all his promos, his sound and style were definitely unique, which is what made ABC stand out so much compared to today's copycat styles, It's too bad he was a perpetual cynic. Sure, there are people who wrote bad copy but if you've watched enough of these videos of him you'll see that it was just a matter of a few takes to make it work. What a chore admittedly to non-linear editing in DAW's today.
I had no idea he was that old at the time he was doing those voiceovers.
Sweet, and I remember the Pilot of the Powerpuff Girls where he was the announcer.
4:30 4:31 imagine if that went on the air!
ABC (and all of its affiliates) would have been fined by the FCC, but it would have made the mature mad or otherwise cringe, but the immature would laugh for sure.
@@realJoshiBOI It took me a minute to catch on to what they were laughing about. And what I got is,
"Rozanne and Ritters' Rocking the factory". If that's what they were laughing about," that is real shitty. 😂
I used to do similar types of promos for Fox Kids (Sat morning cartoons) and getting it to time can certainly be a beeeatch!
We had by then gone all digital, so (although you always try and avoid it) we now have the ability to add a tiny bit of "time compression, (to squeeze the audio to fit picture). This could have made this session go MUCH smoother (and faster with less frustration:-) That said the video was indeed edited badly as Mr. Anderson pointed out.
In his earlier days, he was Ghoulardi in Cleveland. Weekend host of horror movies and making fun of local celebrities.
I started working as a radio engineer in 1997. The audio productions studios looked kind of like this. Not so anymore.
alman54 Yes indeed. The folks involved in audio and video back then had incredible creativity and mind bending skills! With today's tools a monkey can do it and make a moron who can't carry a tune in a feed bucket pass for a singer - sort of. But they can't give it the heart. Sorry - back on point, Ernie was one cool customer. Loved him as Ghoulardi and I'm happy that he was able to parley his great voice and wonderful personality into a highly lucrative life-long career!
LEGEND!! RIP
Ernie wasn't having a very good day here.
I've seen that WONDER YEARS episode, as I remember Margaret Farquhar's name, but I don't recall ever seeing any of the other shows.
These programs were originally aired on ABC on Tuesday, May 2, 1989.
Had to be some time between April 18, 1989 - June 13, 1989 as that was when Have Faith had it short life
Recording on May 1, '89 for broadcast on the next day (I looked up the air dates of the Have Faith and Wonder Years eps before I realized it's on the title card at the start of the reel)
Never knew Ghoulardi did these voice-overs.
His son Paul T. must miss him, still.
Isn't that the same guy who did the voiceovers for not only ABC, but the Super Mario Bros. 3 Saturday Morning cartoon opening narration and the SEGA Master System commercials?
Yes he was. I was sad to find out that he only lived into the early 32-bit (PS1/N64/Saturn) era. He would have been 100 this month.

So funny. Nowadays, this can all be done digitally, in seconds.
not in "seconds"
No, digital stuff doesn't help you practice your lines and record Ernie-Anderson-quality stuff "in seconds". Computers don't make individuals perform faster with the same results, they're just easier to use than tape. People get really weird ideas about 'digital' sometimes and this is one of those times. It isn't magic.
Que buen video . Tienes más ?
Ernie Anderson the voice of ABC. Don Pardo the voice of NBC. Who was the voice of CBS?
Good catch with factory vs rectory
"Rozanne and John Ritters' Rocking the factory". OK, I get it. 😂
This is 5 billion times easier now. 😂
Hey Group Its Gonna Be a Good Show so Cool it
Hit me with that Max man!
All hail the king ghoulardi
The Orson Welles "Frozen Peas" of the 80s
I just found out that Ernie is Paul Thomas Anderson's father!
