I was at the skatepark yesterday and there was a rather heavy guy, likely 200-230 LBS in his late 30s or early 40s who was in a flat area practising ollies and kickflips repeatedly for two hours. When I left to go to work, he was *still* there, and now jumping onto ledges. I am 215 and lean, and only wish I was as good as this guy!
Work at it folks... if someone who is over 200 LBS with a beer belly can do this so well, anyone can learn!!
I'm 6'1" and 275, it just takes a lot of practice, and maybe a few more broken boards lol
kg please XD
I'm 190 and am starting to get mine down
That's pretty punk rock to be heavy but still killing it skating.
Love this comment. I thought I was too heavy and proved myself wrong.
It's all about mental barriers, once you got the idea its easy, like a click in your mind. You have to unify mind and body
Damn , i wish im already at that mind and body level
It’s harder to get that mental clarity, got to skate a lot
yeah the only thing holding me back is fear :/
This man just learned how to use 1000 percent of the mind

Landed my first pop shove today. SOOOOOO happy!!!!!!!!!
Armand congrats 👍
congrats, I landed my first pop shove when I first started skating this past summer. I just learned to Ollie this past Thursday too. it's kinda weird I landed that before landing an Ollie.
Trash
KLIMIN0AY ay man don't be so rude we all start somewhere. At Least he's giving it a go and its sick how he landed for the first time. Its the best feeling ever.
I was always really close. And then some local skaters gave me some pointers. Now gotta learn the frontside 180.
I landed my first KICKFLIP TODAY!!!

5 Secrets to learn skate board tricks.

Longboard Brand I hit my head and had to got to the hospital
@willianaol2000 Cookie i did a ollie i smack my dic
angela dunn he could’ve been so much better if he practiced, maybe could’ve won a chip
I persisted for an hour and I actually successfully did an ollie today! Gonna take these tips to hone it :D
Me who has easily spend 1500+ trying and still cant:😔
I want to add one more rule!
BE CONFIDENT
Alot of people cant ollie because theyre scared to fall. I had to overcome this fear and once i stopped worrying about falling my confidence in trying to ollie is better. I can get the board more up there and i cant wait to get my ollie mastered!
Same here and try to fall on purpose to trick ur brain into not thinking it’s not scary to fall
one of the best skills is learning to commit
It's really kind of scary while rolling.
No it's not lmao
Just get used to riding your board before trying to do tricks 😄

I had my ”click” today. When things just locked in place for me. Started trying to skateboard now 10 months ago after only trying it as a kid. Been trying to do ollies on and off for 7 months or so but not really intensely. But for about the last two months I’ve been doing it a bit more intensely. But have been a bit terrified since I’ve managed to injure the same wrist twice in a week so been afraid to commit fully and slip out and land with the same wrist again.
Today though I landed 18 rolling ollies in a row. Some a bit sketchy for sure but some that were probably the best I’ve ever done.
Overall the pop sounded so crisp today. The slightly delayed slide felt so good and on point. I really felt the board level out. The difference between my old ollies is that now I felt and percieved the entire motion from start to end almost in slow motion in comparison to just landing before with no clear idea of how I ended up there.
THAT'S AMAZING
@@Jp_Elcrack2403 Just pretend you're standing still and the ground is moving under you. Do it exactly the same.
would like but it would change it from 69 sorry
been doing the same, but since september been really practicing every day. and i can relate to this. i have done a few now where it was like slow motion i actually had time to process and feel my foot leveling me out. Before it was all over in a blink and i could never be consistent or work out why it was good or bad that time. There are many factors to ollie i guess, it just takes different amounts of time for the timing to click in your head.
@@ThisIsDownstate love it! Yeah I find you’re constantly finding some little thing that’s part of the bigger picture to work on be it height, stability, keeping straight or just levelling out. Or any number of things connected to these. Keep practicing is really the best advice. Enough attempts and eventually you’ll start figuring it out.
What he says is true guys, I hurt my ankle and knee many times, trust me it's worth it, skate everywhere and don't give up, you'll get it.
Practice!
i ain’t never giving up skateboarding is practically my life now
weed nose practicing during quarantine is the best because less people will see you fall (it’s totally normal to fall but some people stay away from it because of that aspect, so think about it less people are out so less will see you fall, and the less nervous you are the less you actually do fall so it all works out) plus once quarantine IS over then youll look like an OK amateur instead of a newbie at the skatepark because u got all the practice in :)
i suggest doing it in ur neighborhood or streets/alleys and stuff and if ur roads are as sloped and cracked as mine and it makes u too nervous (it did for me at first when i got back into skating but im used to it now) then find basketball&tennis courts in ur area and skate on those, tennis ones in particular will be softer landings and they will be emptier places than skateparks n parking lots will. hope this helps :)
i got the worst shinner yesterday it hurts so much
@Official Weed Nose did you start skating again?
Just bought my first skateboard today. My ollie learning journey starts today! thanks for this video :)
katherinethe19th good luck 😃👍👍
Remember to practice riding a lot before trying tricks while rolling! :)
Learn how to ride it first haha, takes a while to get comfortable just pushing, getting a feel for the balance and building the stabiliser muscles in your calves/ankles
Breaks her leg.
How is your ollie now?
I lost 50 pounds of fat, I feel like im flying on my board #olliefam
yo how
by working out like a possesed beast
thats my plan, for the summer. need to get into shape before I start skating.
skateboarding is a great reason to get in shape! thats what I did
Fucking legend
I'm a beginner and knew I was onto something when I started sliding my front foot up a lot faster. It leveled the board out everytime
Is anyone else feel like it is easier moving than staying still?
Mattster M it is but learning it stationary will help in the long run of just getting familiar with the board leaving the ground. All future tricks get easier once you start moving as well as going faster.
Learning tricks stationary messed me up when it came to translating it to rolling. I learned kickflips pretty quick stationary but took me ages to land a rolling one
Yes
yuh
It's easier moving due to the forward momentum. To beginners, everything seems easier stationary because there is less of a risk of falling. It is easier to level out an ollie stationary than it is while moving. Slightly.
These tips actually got me going man, finally leveling out my board and can Ollie on and over things, feel much more confident and comfortable in my board now, just need to practice abit more

Then I’m the queen.
haha +C/T
Are you doing them stationary or moving? I'll share some tips, just let me know which one you want me to focus on.
Thanks man. Moving is when I rocket the most. Stationary isn't too bad.
Your advice about working on perfecting smaller ollies is working wonders for me. It's helping me really get down the form and movements required that I've been weak on. Also really focusing on kicking forward with my front foot to level it out. Thanks! Im a mom and sometimes feel like I should give it up because it's weird for a mom to skate but that feeling of popping a solid ollie is just too good to give up. Any tips on working up to ollies up and off curbs? I've never been able to overcome my fear of ollies anywhere other than flat ground.

The "tackle small Ollies" tip really helped me out -- For some reason, in my head, the science of performing an Ollie while moving doesn't quite compute at this moment, but with that tip in mind I am able to consistently Ollie (small ones so far), and now, I can pop the board while moving without compeletely losing it the moment I pick up my knees. I am now more confident than ever that I can finally learn to get over curbs at speed. Even the good how-to videos don't stress the importance of the little Ollie. I don't comment on CZcams Videos but you, sir, deserve the credit where it's due. You rock! 🤘🏽
Legit your channel is awesome. You’ve inspired me to start skating again and also got me trying to learn the kickflip. Over he past two days I’ve been skating tons and I finally landed a few of them. Just a bit more of practice on landing timing and Im sure I’ll be able to do it 90% of the time. So thanks a ton for your great content. I lie to watch all of your videos and just wanted you to know that your high key fuegonesss.
I literally just landed an Ollie for the first time this past Thursday, I think I have it for the most part I just have to practice a bit more before I can go higher just like john said.
When I pop my board my front foot doesn’t have the time to slide :( I’m frustrated
Kind of the same with me, I drag my foot a little but for some reason I just instantly pull it back.
i can’t get my foot to slide:(
Owen Lewis lmk when u get the hang of it.
zVela same to you ahah, i’ll be asking questions 😂😅
Owen Lewis I’m getting a little more comfortable with the board but I still can’t drag 💀
I learned to Ollie over something and I’m so happy and if your having a hard time Ollieing keep practicing it takes time to achieve what your trying to do and I believe you can do it
THANKYOU I needed this haha! I've uploaded 2 skate progress vlogs on youtube and ollies are my #1 obstacle right now
If I don't specifically work on my Ollie, I'll lose them. ☹️ Ollieing up stuff is easier than a good flat ground Ollie for me sometimes.
So true that's actually how I learned to Ollie when I first started is by Ollieing up or over stuff.
bone your ollie
Anthony Tran because you're not thinking about the ollie when you're going up stuff, you're thinking about the obstacle 😁
@@courage552 i know this is irrelative but can you sub to my skate channel. I just started it. thanks
this video is actually so helpful. ill keep this video in mind tomorrow when im practicing my ollies :)
Thanks for the great tip about doing low ollies. I’m still learning and now having tried low ones I feel like I have more control and a better understanding of what my feet are doing.
Super appreciated! Just landed my first Ollie without SkaterTrainers this weekend, starting skating at 26 years old when you only know how to ride is quite challenging. Thanks a lot for putting out awesome tips every now and then, love the channel and the motivation you put in every single thins you do. Cheers!
If you have any questions on ollies or anything, hit that reply. I can shed some tips (30 yrs old, started skating when I was 10 up until my early 20s. Stopped due to an injury and got back on it two years ago).
Thanks a lot, will do. I have to keep working on them for now. It's so hard to keep the motivation going!
So the skatertrainers helped? What did you find were the pros and cons of using it?
They did helped, only hard thing is to remove them. Build a lot of confidence too!
My issue is commitment. I'm so tense when I try to Ollie on concrete that I can't commit. If I could just get passed that I would be able to Ollie great. But again I just started skating 1 week ago. So I got some skater trainers and I'm going to just practice riding getting comfortable on my board and pushing. Try Ollie's later.
Matt Peak almost a year later can you do any tricks yet
@Stephen going good I feel. Can ollie close to a foot. About a board in a half at pretty good speed too. Took me a while to get there though but looking back at my old comment makes me laugh lol
@@shawcremeans1773 no tricks yet it took me a good 8 months to really learn a good ollie. First i learned it stationary which was a mistake because then i had to relearn it basically, while rolling. But my ollies are about a board and a half now and pretty consistent. 9 out of 10 times.
Matt Peak I have been skating for about a month now and I am still learning the Ollie. But suddenly when I woke up this week I couldnt ollie, it was like I lost all progress. When did u get comfortable with your ollies? Thanks
@@jetmak6975 about 5 months to learn it rolling. Don't learn it stationary it's a waste of time TRUST me. Start rolling slow. Baby steps. Skating is VERY VERY hard and takes a VERY long time. But to your point about waking up and losing all progress, that's totally normal. Happens all the time. To everyone. Even Nyjah. You didn't lose any progress brother trust me. It's all in your head. In fact I just had one of those days last week. I couldn't even ollie. But I found a way to fix it and it's all mental. You have to completely zero in man. Totally focused on you and your board and nothing else. Push yourself with each and every single ollie. Literally try your hardest each and every single time. Think about everything. From squatting lower to lifting your front leg higher and popping that back leg harder. Think about and visualize every thing that you do. You can make bad days a learning experience. But man the biggest piece of advice I can give you is something every skater will tell you because it's true and the ONLY way to get good is do not give up. Keep going no matter what. Skating is so hard and takes SOOO LOOONG to get good at. With time you'll get more comfortable and confident on your board. It just takes a long time man. Keep at it!!
Dude yes! I was just hoping for some tutorial type videos!! More more more please my guy! 👍

Super great video and very helpful in getting back into skating
Hey John thanks for the tips on the Ollie! These tips help a lot.
So I learned to skate when I was 8, just pushing goofy for 2 years, and got very comfortable. When I was 10 I started to learn tricks, and I have absolutely no idea how I made this mistake but I learned my ollies regular, and never did them rolling. When I saw the problem, I started to learn pushing regular but over the years I never fully got comfortable, most likely to me skating on and off for 6 years. All I learned in 6 years was better board control and higher ollies riding regular. Now 16, I finally decided to just say fuck it and I’m just relearning ollies goofy instead of regular and it’s a real damn struggle
Lmao that face after saying "push it in there" 1:44
I loved this so much!! Please do more, maybe for Frontside 180 or Kickflip?
Very good, clear, and enthusiastic when explaining the steps, awesome video
Me - *starts trying to Ollie on concrete while rolling*

You are so sick John hill and thanks for making videos and helping me with my skateboarding
I just can’t lean forward when trying to Ollie.
Any idea on how to fix this?

I watch a lot of your vids. You’re mega awesome. I don’t skate much, but you’re an inspiration for me to be a better person. 🔥🔥🔥
Just started doing ollie's today. I'll try to practice the little ollie's. Thanks for the tips.
same:) good luck
ur vids are awesome
I can't do my Ollies without moving lmao
It's so much better moving but my timing is off when I slide my foot up and out and it doesn't look boned it kinda just levels out as I go down
This reminds me of a thing I saw where pro gymnasts couldnt do simple cartwheels cos they had been doing more than that for ages it's harder to do something basic after mastering the harder version
Didn't know that vid would end up being so helpful after 1000+ videos i've watched on ollies :). Thanks man!
YES!!!!! Some John Hill skate service.
Hiiiii love your channel!!!!
My problem with an ollie is definitely leveling out the board, sometimes ill be able to level out other times I can't level out to save my life
Same
THANK YOU SO MUCH, after u gave the tip to start with small ollies then get bigger, I finally got my first one down, I realized i put way too much energy into it but i got it!!!
#1 video to help your ollies god damn i really love john
Please please please do one on 360 flips
Should add drawings onto your freeze frames to emphasize your points
I learned how to Ollie from your videos, thanks a lot. Keep up the great content dawg
I did my first ever ollie today and it wasn’t very good but I’m gonna get back to it tomorrow with these tips in mind. Good vid!
My problem is i can get four wheels off the ground but not the tail
I had that same problem trying to ollie while moving after I got it down while in a crack and on carpet it turns out I wasn't sliding my foot very much at all and after I worked on that it was fixed. So I would suggest putting more emphasis in to sliding your front foot. Thats what worked for me!
So do you know the song that says slide to the left, slide to the right, okokok so when you do your pop depending on if you're goofy or not which im not so when i ollie, i go down bend my knees, come up and pop my foot at the top height of my jump and SLIDEEEEEE TO THE LEFT well its more like jumping with the ollie
1:46
"That's what she said"-Michael Scott
also i have a little tip. when you are pushing your front foot forward to balance the board dont think of it as a slide. try to do the pop and front foot forward together in 1 motion. and sometimes it doesnt work because your back foot is on the board so it cant go higher. so try to jump as high as you can (try to jump and bringing your knees to your chest)
OMG I am so glad, that first tip is what I've been looking for thank you so much for that
Might wanna remove that apostrophe from "Ollie's" in the title.
s. s. THANK YOU jesus
Using the possessive instead of plural seems to be a trend these day's hahaha
Haha, "day's". Nice.
s. s. Why your ollie is suck 😂 lol didn‘t notice
Whenever I ollie I wreck my shoes because I slide one the upper eyelet instead of towards the bottom of the shoe. What am I doing wrong
Hugh G. Rection shoes will always get wrecked when skateboarding
@@lukefisher5352 it isn't about the shoes ripping. I get that. Its just that I slide in a really weird place compared to everyone else
I've been trying to ollie for 7 months and you literally just called out all my mistakes, i never really took the time to search up mistakes in ollieng(idk if this is a real word) because i thought it was all about just sliding my foot. Thank you so much now i finally can be corrected !!
How is it now
Perfect tips man! Thanks!
When you move the front foot forward to “level it out” but it dosnt work

I think what really helps when learning how to ollie while moving is to do what number 3 says. Try to do smaller ollies first to get control, and then when you do have the control, practice getting them higher.
Keep your shoulders parallel to the trucks/bolts, soon as you *hear* the pop, start sliding your foot up towards the nose as far as you can, and while landing focus on landing your feet evenly on the bolts. Hope this helps
John u should do kick flips next
khalli D He already has a couple of years ago. It’s called 5 reasons why your kickflips suck.
finally 안녕하세요~ㅋㅋ love your vids dude im korean! i'v been watching since... jam invasion 😂
Wow out of all the videos for Ollies I think this one is going to help me the most
I have a major tip for anyone still struggling.
I used to not be able to get my back wheel off the ground at all and it was mainly all because I didn't pop hard enough (due to me being scared to pop hard for some reason and that could of gone alot easier if I was already comfortable on my board) and I also did the foot drag motion somewhat but I only dragged it up a little or bearly at all. I also had the timing all wrong because I kind of took it like steps (pop, drag, land) but really its just supposed to be all at one motion. I finally got my ollies off the ground after getting educated about them and really understanding the proper way to do them. It wasn't just that but it took me a lot of practice and I mean alot like 3 hours a day straight. PRACTICE IS VERY IMPORTANT TRUST ME IT PAYS OFF AND I LEARNED THAT. but annyways here is a list of things you should know for your ollies:
1. Bend your knees and use them as a spring when you jump
2. Actually jump while doing the motion
4. Think of the pop as a flick of your foot
5. Think of dragging first, because the pop is really quick and it will happen if you know how to do this correctly. (This works for me when I think about it because it helps me always get the timing right but it doesn't work for everybody)
6. When all 4 wheels are in the air push down the foot that you dragged down to the ground, while lifting the other foot that you popped.
7. Alot of vids or ppl dont mention this but the drag foot placement before you ollie is super important. If you are a bit taller put the foot you drag with closer to the foot you pop with. If you are shorter like me put the foot you drag with further away from the foot you pop with. (BUT MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FOOT YOU USE TO DRAG IS STILL CLOSE TO THE MIDDLE)
8. Land each foot on the bolts
9. If this still doesn't work go back to the simple motions of pop, drag, and land and keep on doing them over and over.
The best advice I can give to you is to practice you will get it eventually and be consistent like do it everyday even if you just try 10 a day you will see some improvement in a week.
If you have any questions feel free to reply!! Have a good day/night
YALL CAN DO THIS I BELEIVE IN YOU🤗🙃

How
How to heel flip better?
IAN DAVIDSON
What problems are you having?
agent nukaz my board goes behind sometimes to the side of my flicking foot and when it stays underneath me my front foot hits it
IAN DAVIDSON
Sounds like you need to stay centered over the board and stick your foot out or pull it up so it doesn't hit the board. Ball of your foot should be near the edge of the board behind the bolts, do an Ollie and flick at the conclave, keep your leg out until it's done flipping. If you get credit carded, your not sliding your foot up the board like an ollie.
agent nukaz thank you

In case it helps anyone, the game changer for me when transitioning from stationary ollies to moving ollies was to lean my weight on my front foot while doing the moving ollie. I think stationary ollies conditioned me to put most of my weight on my back foot because I was thinking about the pop a lot. If you feel like your board is going to shoot out from under you forward when doing moving ollies, try leaning your weight on your front foot before popping.
