There was a service bulletin in 2008 saying that if there is this noise on cold start-ups lasting 3-4s after sitting for several hours- no repairs were necessary. I think it is due to the position of the oil filter being so high in the engine that the oil drains out over time; the timing chain tensioner requires oil pressure to work. If it last longer than the 3 to 4 seconds then the timing tensioner needs to be replaced- as per service manual. australiancar.reviews/_pdfs/Kia_GrandCarnival-Sorento_VQ-BL_TSB028.pdf
If you have this engine, check your oil level often. The oil change shops won't necessarily tell you it was low on oil. I now do my own service after finding my engine was down at least 2 quarts during a normal oil change cycle.
This helped assess the symptom. My Sorento idles high 1.5-2rmp & kinda loud on cold start. Then, if i shift in gear drops to 1rmp, but I been cranking it, hearing high idle, turning off then cranking again, which drops rmp & noise- like in then vid.
Used 2015 Sorento has made this noise at start-up for at least the past 90K miles. I'm much more concerned about my high oil consumption. I add half a quart a week to keep it topped off. Very little oil on the ground. 145K currently
I have 191k on my kia sorento i have a 2011 and mine still starts and runs like it still brand it doesnt make that noise i bought it brand new never have touched the timing and do t need to and my 06 fusion has 180k and never messed with the timing its all about maintenance and upkeep on oil filter and plugs and so on
My wife’s car has this… a 2015 with 150k miles… she still owes money on the car as well. Probably should just figure out a way to get her out of this heap of junk rather than dump the money into fixing it. Don’t know though, kinda stuck with it for now.
I have a 2013 Sorento with a GDi and when I do a cold start it sounds like a weedeater but the sound goes away after it runs for a few minutes. It has 157k miles
Where does anyone get a job like this done? So far most shops won't do that big of a job and the dealership quoted me only a little over $2,000 to start but then after looking at it said it would cost over $6,000. How much should someone pay for this and where would even do it for a fair price?
The noise is pretty normal and will not cause problems. In time the pin in the cam advancer will wear and cause a horrible noise on cold startup only. Time to get a different car.
This just happened to me. Mine started with the growl, then as I was going down the road, the growl started slightly. Oil pressure light came on and then I completely lost power and oil started coming out of front of the engine slightly. It will start but sounds like a hammer thrown in the front of the engine. Is it shot??
Thank you.
This is exactly what I’m going through with my 2017 Sorento, 86500+ miles.
Good to see another video from you!
Mine still does that after replacing timing chains guides and tensioners, new oil and filter The rattle is the cam phasers, particularly the inlets
Amazing talk through you said it right 100 percent on point listen to this guy !!

Do you have videos on replacing the timing chain and tension and everything? I’m going through same issues 2011 Kia sorento v6 166,000 miles
What's a rough estimate for this repair?
Same thing with my 2011 thundra had to change it at 100k and again at 200k with oem timing chain kit from the dealership
I spent $4500 to pull the engine and replace all timing components.
Cheap ass car

My wife has a 21 sportage with 19k miles. I change the oil every 4-5k miles. I hear it rattle during cold starts.
My 2012 sorento sxv6 makes this noise, 303000 miles 😭

It doesn't matter how much maintenance you do it's a design flaw
Just put it neutral just after start and the growl goes away instantly

Did they agree to the repair?
I didnt present as if I wanted to do it. I've done the repair before and its expensive and time consuming. they are aware of it though :).
U never did a bleed down video on that Oldsmobile Intrigue, this car is impossible.
I have a sedona and it sounds like that, after 10 mechanics later they still can't figure out the noise😡
