This is the beginning of one of the best arcs in all of db
Both of the next arcs are the best imo,the next WT is just fire even better then this one
Apart from the battles and the intensity, I think what makes this arc great are the stakes. Piccolo

kills the dragon, which was honestly mindblowing. As a kid when I watched it, I unfortunately knew DBZ existed and some of the characters that died were still alive. But just imagine someone who didn't know about any of this and just discovered the story in order, it must have been crazy. Suddenly it became so dark, with multiple people dying apparently "for good". Peak DB, I don't think the last arc reaches that level.
It's good but it does have some questionable writing and asspulls

@@xenotyposI can attest to that. I watched the show as a kid in order it was mind-blowing as hell when king piccolo killed the eternal. My 4 year old heart was dying along with all my favorite characters.
I love how mr.referee and Goku stay light friends over the years, he's always known what he could do since these first tournaments and never bought into mr. satan being the best.

Also it's nice to see how much Goku cares for Krillin. A few of his biggest powerups were from Krillin getting merked.

I love the tone they gave when Krillin left to take Goku's stuff, Goku's like "Oh no, nothing, I forgot what I wanted to say hahaha" but you just can tell something is odd, and you feel anxious about it. And the way he makes a double check with that unsettling music hitting at 15:44, it's perfect, and it's one other reason why I think having silence in a scene then a good music placement can make a lot of difference.
In the manga it was faster paced, you just hear Krillin screaming, they check the place and he's just dead, I think both version works very well with their format, a weekly manga chapter is like 15 pages so it works, and the anime is more cinematic so it works too.
When I read the manga as a kid, that moment scared the hell out of me because it was so sudden and out of nowhere, I still remember the feeling even to this day. The anime couldn't help but telegraph the tragedy when I think it would have worked better if they did it like in the manga. I was just as confused as Aimin when he thought he missed a joke, and I even knew what was about to happen, lol.
It's not even the fact that manga chapters have limited pages, it's because the anime has to do everything not to catch up to the source material, from filler scenes to drawing out non-filler ones.

That why Son Goku transformed to super saiyan when he saw Krilin's second death
So Goku even though it was not explained could still sense Ki even at this early age. However it was not refined like in Z or Super. He could usually feel where someone was. The weird hallucination he went through was feeling Krillin's ki being snuffed out. The worry he had before was because he felt something evil lurking....just did not know where. So when Krillin eventually lost his life that is when Goku had that glass breaking feeling. He knew something had happened.

No downtime after the tournament, we’re jumping right into the next arc
Psychic intuition a great representation, you know what's known as that "Gut Feeling". That's what happened to Goku why he stopped and stared blankly and kept getting worried about Krillin he got that gut feeling like maybe he should be going back to get his own dragon ball and power pole himself for a reason.
That was a crazy ending to that fight and very wholesome after. This is when Krillin died the first time, get the dragonballs. Looks like there is a monster on the loose, get angry Goku. It is pretty cool Goku uses the Kamehameha for mobility.

This next arc is my favorite arc in all of Dragon Ball! And it's my second favorite arc in ALL of the Dragon Ball franchises!! I can't wait for you to experience it!!

such a fire way of ending the arc, just the creepy serenity of the happy ending and send-off for krillin and the realisation that something is off only for goku to run in on his dead body
the moment when krillin left to get Goku's belongings , Goku looked back at krillin and with a brief pause ; he looked worried. I know that feeling. I lost my younger brother who got stabbed. Similar to this scene. My brother before he left the house my mom looked at my brother similar to how Goku looked at krillin . The whole month before he got stabbed I felt off and had a weird feeling. This scene hits home

I love the build up; the music, Goku watching Krilling getting away, you know something was amiss. For me this was the start of a more serious Dragon Ball, Tien's brutality was just a build up for the next arc.

Next is honestly one of the best arches of the series. Although theirs parts i dont like especially the divine water and the villain not being my favourite every character participates and it feels like the only Arch in DB where Toriyama uses every character at his disposal. The stakes have risen for the first time and not just in a sense of the world being endanger but emotionally with the death of Krillen. Despite me liking the 23rd world martial arts tournament more this is still where the series starts to shine.
What makes the stakes higher than ever (imho), is what happens to the dragon.
