I feel Roshi being a survivor of a fricking demon apocalypse is an often overlooked aspect of his character
He's roshi, ain't nothing too surprising from the "king of martial arts"
Especially since he is over 300 years old lol
We are now entering Peak Dragonball Classic ladies and gentlemen
Peak DB overall, it's like my 3rd fav arc in the franchise
It's great but I feel that the two first tournaments are on par with it somewhat but it is the start of The "real dragonball franchise" with action packed planetary threats
The tournaments are peak the dkp arc is kinda meh after the first watch

@@hastik241 Same. 1 Namek 2 Cell 3 Piccolo imo, although I shift between Saiyan arc (despite being short) and Cell (which had the best style and so many badass moments). Namek/Freeza = Toriyama's GOAT.
The symbolism of Goku knocking down the sign after running out in his rage and Roshi yelling for him to stop is amazing. It reads "Budo" or "Martial Arts", something Roshi taught his students to only use to protect life and never to use in vengeance, and here Goku is forsaking his master and heading out with the intention to KILL. Amazing.

If I remember correctly, Krillin's death was the end of the current season on Toonami. We had to wait a while until the King Piccolo arc really started just to get a resolution.
The 22nd Budokai concluded its US Broadcast in December 2002. The Piccolo Arc premiered September 2003.
Of course the DVD of the Arc was released in April 2003.
The Mafuba, or "Evil Containment Wave" was based on the ghost traps and proton packd from the movie Ghostbusters which had just come out and was very popular
It's just PERFECT how we learned more about Roshi and Shen being students under the same master during the tournament, before King Piccolo and the (very relevant) Mutaito lore in this arc. Peak Dragonball! ...fuck it, still one of the top 5 if not top 3 arcs of the entire franchise imo!
(Also, can't wait to hear Piccolo's theme again - one of the most memorable OST's as well, and a core childhood memory :D)

The music in this Saga is so good, I pretty much like all DKP related tracks. The producer’s name is Shunsuke Kikuchi is anyone wants to search up a compilation of his work on CZcams, you will recognize a ton of tracks from DB, DBZ and some other older animes. They make great background music and I even listen to em while working out. Some tracks give me a crazy pump lol

Not really, they’re born via eggs the same way normal Namekians are while Shenron was created via a statue

Only Roshi can use the evil containment wave, but Piccolo doesn't know that. He just knows some martial artist mofo pulled some trick on him, so they all need to die to be sure it won't happen again.

Imagine being so powerful that only the Evil Containment Wave can be used to defeat you but still even powerful enemies can fall under certain techniques and strategy. That's peak Dragonball at it's finest. On another note planet Earth was so lucky the Saiyans never found it for so many years or Lord Frieza cause they haven't really seen true terror.

1. King Piccolo and Kami used to be one being before they split. That is why both are/were old. Later on, little spoilers here, events happen in OG Dragonball that lead to King Piccolo spitting out a reincarnation/son of himself that would become the modern Piccolo people know of. That is why in Z, Piccolo is young, while Kami remained old.
2. Any martial artist (of the dragonball Ki-Manipulation type) has the *potential* to challenge King Piccolo by growing too powerful themselves or using techniques like the Evil Containment Wave. That is why unsealed King Piccolo's new plan was to first wipe them all out preemptively, and then dominate the world once more unopposed.
Avatar the last firebender used a similar plot of the "bad guys' plan" in wiping out any potential Avatars first before conquering the world.

Still funny to think all the trouble Piccolo gives everyone in this arc and he's still an ant compared to "that weakling Raditz".
6:35 Before you go in any theory that won't be explained in the show, the reason Piccolo gives birth to creatures that don't look like Namekian people is because of his Demon status.
You will see in due time about Piccolo its better to watch rather than spoil.
King Piccolos children are not Namekians. They are demons. In dragon ball anything that is pure evil without trace of good is considered a demon for the most part. When the nameless namekian (Kami and king piccolos original form) split into 2 they split into good and evil which makes King Piccolo a demon which normal namekians are not. This is because he is the incarnation of all of the negative energy expelled from Kami. This is why when he creates children they are mutated demon spawn instead of normal namekians since King Piccolo himself is not technically a namekian but a distorted evil that came from a namekian.
Those are more like soldiers meant for fighting that King Piccolo made. It's not exactly like how Namekians are spawned. I think intent is everything. When you want a soldier that's ready to go then a Namekian isn't what results.
FINALLY
I know he didn't go Super Saiyan at that point because Toriyama didn't think of it yet.
But this would be an excellent moment for Goku to go Super Saiyan. And do you know how much of a beast he would be at this point?
Goku's power level was about 180. Super Saiyan is a 50x multiplier. Meaning his power level would've been about 9000.
He would've destroyed the entirety of Original Dragon Ball along with Raditz, Saibamen and Nappa as a kid. 👀

Seeing you react to this made my whole day good. Your reaction to him saying "king piccolo" was priceless bro. If people watch Z and then og this is for sure the reaction everytime if theyre into the story. It makes it so worth the long burn of og. Tbh the only good part about the og arcs before this is the tournaments in the og cuz they illustrate the transition between somewhat normal speed martial arts that eventually transition to superhuman speeds that lead into powerscaling in Z. And king piccolo entering the frey is the catalyst for the powerscaling goku reaches by the beginning of Z.
Every arc was good and necessary, it was just different. What DB had that DBZ didn't have, was the journey aspect, Goku discovering the world. The humor was also considerably toned down over time (even if it wasn't as funny in the anime as in the manga anyway).
@xenotypos oh for sure, and don't get me wrong I love dragonball in canon in it's entirety atleast in the manga for db, dbz, and dbs (yes I'm one of those people), and I will say the very first time I saw all of it was magical as fuck and made me so damn happy but having read all of the manga timeline beginning to current 7 times now and having watched the anime 4 times through now I can say the pilaf saga, red ribbon saga, namek saga/ginyu saga, and the dbs super hero saga I enjoy very little after seeing them again. But they for sure have alot of charm currently and I'm so damn glad people like aimin are going through all of it :)
back here there was no such thing as namekian, king piccolo was green and had antenas very ihuman loook so he was a literal demon also all those dinosour creatures are his biological sons
