Being a hockey and stars fan in south Texas, i don't know what was worse having something like this happen to my team, or going to school the next day knowing what an amazing once in a lifetime thing like this happen and no one at school would know what i was talking about because they don't watch hockey.
+ZFKATNBADGER40 No offense meant, but your team still won, though, right? In fact they came all the way back from being down 4-1 on the Oil's home ice to do it. Not to mention that Stefan scored your team's first goal, if I'm not mistaken. So you went to school the next day with your team having beaten Edmonton on the road. Plus you made the playoffs that year. Doesn't sound too bad to me. :)
He tries to go to his backhand and the hockey gods say "NOPE" and the puck takes a bounce that I'm pretty sure breaks the laws of physics, I feel so bad for this guy.
Christopher Johnson screw the fact the Sedins went after him, Martin Havlat was picked near the end of the first round and he has more points than Stefan has games played.
@@christopherjohnson1873 To be fair, Brian Burke did a whole lot of dealing in order to get the Sedins. He traded the Thrashers the first overall pick in exchange for a promise that they would pick Stefan. Atlanta wanted to get the 1st overall pick for prestige ahead of their inaugural season.
I'm sorry, people, but I feel sorry for Patrik Stefan here and think he gets a raw deal. The puck (watch at 0:53) takes an absolutely unearthly, anti-gravitational leap that would have thrown anyone off. Then in the last few seconds everything came perfectly together for the Oil to tie (great for them & their fans -- not taking anything away, though they went on to lose). I just hate it when in sports certain athletes are unfairly portrayed too harshly (as this announcer did to PS after the incredible play -- "That does not belong in the NHL" ... pullease!).
"Shot the puck like a man" ... yeeeah. Fine, but what a bunch of women play in the NHL, then, since we've all seen dozens of the best ever do that very thing -- slide it on in. The odds of what happened to Stefan were half-a-million to one.
pnutbutrncrackers would love to agree with you, but it doesnt matter that it jumped. patrick stefan is an NHL hockey player. he plays in the best hockey league in the world with the best players and coaches. it is simply unacceptable to make a mistake like that. that would be like a major leaguer forgetting to touch home on a game tying home run in the 9th inning, or a wide reciever dropping a ball as he walks into the end zone untouched, or an NBA player missing a game-tying breakaway layup. simply unacceptable at the proffessional level... no sympathy.
Did you even attempt to read/understand my comment? I'm calling him an idiot FOR skating up to the net... You don't do that... You take the fucking shot at the blue line, and if you can't make that shot, then why the hell are you in th NHL
"At least I thought he was gonna, until he blew it!" lol and the weird bounce is no excuse on that play so don't tell me it could've happened to anyone, an empty-net breakaway is not a difficult play to make
Suitedup1111 He's a NHL player with a million dollar salary he's not supposed to do that. And he ought to take to criticism for it. And he should be embarrassed, that was horrible, and the commentator said, does not belong in the national hockey league.
+Robert V you dont need to worry about that buddy. I just got back from a hockey playoff game with 2 of my friends while you searched for some random kids on the internet to talk shit on
***** I'm very disappointed with the Seahawks, I read in the newspaper that there were allegations that they threw the game in order to win bets that they placed against themselves. If that's true, I'm done watching football. Dishonesty for money in sports really turns me off.
BlackVelvetDaydream ....hate to break it to you but professional sports is a business nowadays. The higher-ups predetermine the outcome of a game not the players.
Well this broadcast is from Sportsnet West, which is Edmonton's station, not Dallas'. If you look at other videos, there is a commentator with less enthusiasm than this, because that is Dallas' broadcast station. So obviously this is going to be a little biased if the people commentating are only doing it for Oilers fans.
I was at the game, and you know what? I have yet to see a crazier, more awesome, epic goal/moment in hockey. This is just crazy. If I told someone 5 years ago that someone would miss the empty net with 8 seconds to go from 2 feet away, and then the team that pulled their goalie scores with 2.0 to go, you'd have said I'm crazy. If I say it'll happen again...You'll still tell me I'm crazy. Go oilers Go!
was watching it w/ my girlfriend at the time who was sleeping. When Hemmer scored, I was yelling like crazy and woke her up. It was well worth facing her wrath. BEST PLAY EVER!!
It's weird because Peter Loubardias is the Flames announcer. For some reason he was put on an Oiler game that night, and I'm so glad he was. Amazing call.
I was at this game! My feelings went from dread, to laughing, to pissing my pants with enthusiasm when Hemmers potted it. I also love that Stefan is no longer in the NHL haha
Two good Edmonton friends of mine this was the first NHL game they ever went to...they said a good number of fans left around the 5:00 mark but they figured they'd stay for the full thing. They said the noise in Rexall was deafening the moment Stefan lost the puck...from where they were the fans even drowned out the horn!
I was watching live on tv, and when Bergeron fanned on passing the puck and gave it away to the Stars player I said out loud 'Bergeron you can't do anything right!' And then that happened.
"CAN YOU...BELIEVE...WHAT WE...JUST SAW!!!"
Best part. Gives me chills.
Amazing!
me too!!!
Nigel Thornberry same
HEMSKY ARE YOU KIDDING ME????!?!?
Nigel Thornberry weird because it was the Calgary announcer

I can understand your sadness..
There is hockey fans in south Texas?
Dallas still won the game in OT though if I remember correctly??
2007, but 1997 video quality
Jake ur just mad
Lol
The graphic is so bad in 2007... damn
Watch this one it’s better

Hahahaha
Patrik Stefan's career summed up in under a minute.
Well, he was drafted first overall by Atlanta in 1999, but guess who else was drafted that year... and he was a HUGE bust.
*****
Are you talking about the Sedin twins?
Yes, the Sedins were drafted after him.
The Sedins, Zetterburg, and Havlat just to name a few went after him
He tries to go to his backhand and the hockey gods say "NOPE" and the puck takes a bounce that I'm pretty sure breaks the laws of physics, I feel so bad for this guy.
"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen." LMAO
Most unbelievable play in sports history PERIOD. we will NEVER see this again. ever.
Ladies and gentlemen, here is the first overall pick of the 1999 NHL entry draft showing his sheer brilliance while in the Na, oh wait...
Atlanta picked him instead of one of the Sedin twins...
Christopher Johnson screw the fact the Sedins went after him, Martin Havlat was picked near the end of the first round and he has more points than Stefan has games played.
There was also Zetterberg who went 210th, but they're the Red Wings.
Hang on? That was Patrik Stefan? The guy who got drafted before the Sedins?
I didn't even realize that until now
kimi20F1c and left the NHL 10 years before the Sedins too
One of the best goal calls of all time.

That's why you don't coast it into the net. Had he shot the puck like a man this video wouldn't exist
"Shot the puck like a man" ... yeeeah. Fine, but what a bunch of women play in the NHL, then, since we've all seen dozens of the best ever do that very thing -- slide it on in. The odds of what happened to Stefan were half-a-million to one.
It is ridiculous and doesn't belong in the NHL. Slide it in, don't try to carry it for no reason what so ever?
pnutbutrncrackers What were the odds that he'd be one of the biggest top pick busts in league history?
pnutbutrncrackers would love to agree with you, but it doesnt matter that it jumped. patrick stefan is an NHL hockey player. he plays in the best hockey league in the world with the best players and coaches. it is simply unacceptable to make a mistake like that. that would be like a major leaguer forgetting to touch home on a game tying home run in the 9th inning, or a wide reciever dropping a ball as he walks into the end zone untouched, or an NBA player missing a game-tying breakaway layup. simply unacceptable at the proffessional level... no sympathy.
"and stefan steals, and he'll ice it. or at least i thought he was gonna until he blew it"
epic....
With out a doubt, one of the best NHL moments of All Time!
"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen!" haha I love it
I must have watched this clip for 5000 times and it never grows old!
I remember being at this game. Most unbelievable thing I've ever seen xD.
JDOG DREWS who won in ot?
@@wyattmurray622 Dallas did
Still gives me shivers
Hemsky plays for Dallas now lol
ShineAgainst32 habs nation now baby
love the commentary, i'm a football (soccer) fan but I can somewhat imagine the emotions these few seconds would have stirred up
I remember watching this game. I was almost in tears from so much excitement...It was awesome
The puck fucking skipped on a chip in the ice.
Agreed. People give him so much shit for something that was a freak thing that has nothing at all to do with skill.
Implying there's ever a good reason to skate right up to the net for an open net shot?
Trisomy 21 that's what he was doing until it skipped
Did you even attempt to read/understand my comment? I'm calling him an idiot FOR skating up to the net... You don't do that... You take the fucking shot at the blue line, and if you can't make that shot, then why the hell are you in th NHL
Trisomy 21 calm down man jeez, I misunderstood your comment
1 of the first nhl vids on CZcams

no matter how many times i watch this i get the chills!
I've seen SO many hockey videos/failures, and this is by far the best
"At least I thought he was gonna, until he blew it!" lol and the weird bounce is no excuse on that play so don't tell me it could've happened to anyone, an empty-net breakaway is not a difficult play to make

Everytime i watch this i get goosebumps actually insane gotta love the crowds reaction
this is one of my favorite videos!
Stefan was known as one of the biggest draft busts of all time and Hemsky is now ironically playing for the stars lol
+Robert V guaran fucking tee you're a dumbass that doesnt sense a joke. you actually think my name is serious? holy fuck you're stupid. #trolled?

Just like the Seahawks in the SuperBowl tonight.

this is just completely unbelievable, one of the most amazing thing i've seen in sports
10 years ago today...this happened.
17years ago this happened :D
What a bust Patrik Stefan was in the NHL. Even worse than Alexandre Daigle.
@Winnipeg Jets Fan Nail Yakupov is right up there with Alexandre Daigle and Patrik Stefan.
@Winnipeg Jets Fan Yes.
@Winnipeg Jets Fan Memory. 😉
@Winnipeg Jets Fan I remembered other #1 pick busts besides Patrik Stefan, Nail Yakupov and Alexandre Daigle.
By far my all time favorite video on CZcams. Weird coming from a Wings fan. Can't deny how exciting this vid is, though.

I've watched hockey for about 5 years, and I've NEVER seen anything this crazy, embarrassing, ridiculous, etc... u name it!!!
5 years of watching? Wow :D
ACTUALLY THE ANNOUNCER SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF BECAUSE THE PUCK TOOK A FUNNY HOP JUST BEFORE HE WAS ABOUT TO PUT HER HOME.
He Could of Easily Just Shot it But not he has to taunt edmonton, And Because he did that karma kicked his ass
CAN YOU BELIEVE WHAT WE JUST SAW?!? Sends chills down my back everytime.
I remember watching this game I will never ever forget it!
I hate the commentator in this. Bias noted.
100% agree. Biased sports announcers are my biggest pet peeve.

I watched this...It was epic!
ales hemsky is forsure 1 of the most underated nhl players
Patrik Stefan felt the need to show off his first overall number 1 draft pick skills by going to his backhand instead of just shooting it forehand.
