The Kane part is what makes the whole story for me.
They won the battle, but lost the war.
Being from Chicago, thank god Stefan missed that shot! 😂
Oilers had another dramatic moment that same season against Dallas. Nov 3rd with 4 seconds left in the game, hemsky had a goal waved off on a blown call for a glove pass. Oilers would've tied that game and had another guaranteed point. Sometimes luck goes one way, sometimes the other. Let's just enjoy McDavid.
@@katiestrahm4291 damn, were bringing the experts in here! Definitely cool watching Edmonton on the front end of a rebuild, looking line a top team.
The hockey gods still decided to give Edmonton multiple #1 picks through the years.... one Connor McDavid
I've always loved this goal and sequence but woah the Kaner connection! crazy.
Right!? Blew us all away too!
The interesting part is the announcer saying Stefan should be ashamed of himself but he actually did exactly what he should have done- he skated the puck in for the easy tap in without trying anything fancy. It was definitely a fluke bounce and fluke sequence of events. Announcer should be ashamed of himself for blaming Stefan.
I agree. He could have roofed it or done something fancy but he just skated it in. I think that was a respectable move
I agree that Ferraro was ripping into him way too much but after the puck bounced on him and he fell he should’ve put it into the corner or something instead of throwing it into the slot. At that point you just want to place it somewhere that doesnt give them time for a counterattack
I mean not really its not the biggest deal overreact much
I remember reading an interview with Ferraro where he said that he actually regrets using such harsh words in hindsight. Guess it was a "heat of the moment" thing
he shouldn’t have flung the puck backwards blindly though
That puck jump is legendary.. There had to be a wizard in the stands somewhere to make it jump that high at exactly the wrong moment :)
🧙♂️🥅
@@CBCSports lol
@Catharsis Have you watched replays. I originally thought he was an idiot too, but the puck did bounce over loose snow/ice.
magnet 🧲
Probably caused by the combined conscious wish of all Edmonton fans that he miss ;)
The more I watch it and the more I hear actual players talk about it (i.e. not me) the more I realize the guy was going for the lowest risk, least original, least spectacular, maximally run-of-the-mill finish to that situation. He "did everything right." Mathematically, there's every reason why he should have scored and we would all have forgotten about this moment as one of the most unremarkable empty netters ever. But even under these conditions, the 0.001% exists and that's what we remember, and we call our 99.999% methods into question because of this 0.001%.
Just wasn’t his night.
Haha. I love Turco's quip about how Hemsky still needles him about that goal to this day. 😂
Classic!
@@CBCSports Any chance your team could follow-up with him and ask about the Nov 3rd goal from the same season? 4 seconds left and oilers had tied it...'til the ref stepped in. Made me think Stefan's"miss" was the hockey gods at work.
Funny thing is, blowing the ENG aside, it was the panic after that cost him when he tried to throw it out in front. If he had just slid with it into the boards and stayed there, time would have run out.
You’re not the only one to say so! Well observed!
True! Hahaha that's funnier now that you pointed that out
That's what I've always thought. Him missing the net wasn't the part where he messed up. It was when he gave the puck right to the oilers and gave them one last chance to score
So basically this moment was “you gained a point...but at what cost?”
A losing franchise while the blackhawks became a dynasty for almost a decade
I was at that game, half the crowd had left the building and the cheering must have been so loud that people came rushing back in to the stands for the overtime, which we sadly lost but it was a heck of a great time.
Some people have to learn to stay in their seats until the end the hard way.
This play used to make me laugh, now I just feel bad for Stefan - worst luck I have ever seen.
The puck jumping over his stick was luck. Falling down was what made it House League. If he didn't fall down, he could've taken the puck into the corner and run out the clock easily.
I must have seen that hockey highlight a hundred times and it still gives me goosebumps
the part where marty told smitty to dash some water in the flow and smutty was like “why” ..cause he knew his face was on television... classic
I love the hockey lore. Its deeper then thrones and rings combined.
Well said!
I remember watching this on TV as a kid! Such a great memory!
Stefan's mistake on this play wasn't so much that he missed the empty net (worst possible luck for the puck to jump the way it did when it did), but where he majorly screwed the pooch was when he panicked after missing the net and just blindly threw the puck back into play (falling down in the process) instead of just taking the puck to the corner to eat up the remaining 8 seconds of the game.
Well observed. Staying cool under pressure can be the solution to a lot of freak occurrences like this.
I'm from Edmonton and I always point out it was all for nothing and we would have had Patrick Kane. I never forget!
Ended up with Alex Plante at 15, had a massive career playing in 10 nhl games with 2 points.
OIler's had 4 number one draft picks within a 5 year span, including 3 straight in a row, and drafting the greatest player in 30 years- in Connor McDavid... All the number one draft picks, would not have made a difference with their God awful management, on top, raining down on this cursed franchise...
They would've botched it and his career would be rough
@@bruciesanchez6381 Probably be traded and flourish elsewhere, like their 2010, first overall, draft pick, did...
@@v4v819 I dunno if I'd say Taylor Hall flourished.. like yea he got some regular season points and a trophy but he's a ghost in the playoffs and his team's are never competitive for long if at all
"Can you....believe...what we....just saw"? My favourite call after a goal. :-)
Or a non-goal?
@@CBCSports I meant after the Oilers scored.
I always remember Mike Smith taking that shot to the face, but I never realized it was from THIS game
These are great. Make more.
Thanks. Glad you enjoy them!!
Aye, aye! Coming soon!
Marty is such an awesome dude. I hounded him all game long in Calgary when he was backup to give my girlfriend a puck. We were sitting right by the players bench. He went out on the ice and scooped up the game winning puck and gave it to her. Awesome !
Class act!
So glad I saw it live lmao what a classic
Turco looked like he didn't even try to make a save
Hemsky is one of my favorite players. So much skill.
They should interview an empty net to get the other side of the story
Riveting.😉
The net is still speechless to this day on what transpired.
Right could change alot of opinions, let the Net talk!
They should have played Ray Ferraro's comments....that was priceless.
This series is awesome!
Thanks. Glad you enjoy them!!
Cheers! Thanks for checking them out! There are more on the way!
I think that only a goalie can remember a specific exact moment of a game forever
You’d be surprised what moments stick with which players...
Turco at 6:02 is PRICELESS hahahaha
He was genuinely shocked!
I’ve always felt bad for him for that unfortunate bounce, but now finding out the Blackhawks possibly got Kane because of it, being a blackhawks fan, I’m very glad for him missing the easiest goal of his life
It’s all a matter of perspective!
I'll never forget this moment as a lifelong Stars fan. I was so mad at Stefan, not because he lost his edge but because he passed the puck back over his head right into the waiting stick of the Oilers.
That is right. That is what gave the Oilers the time to score. Had he held onto the puck, they would have wasted more than two seconds trying to get it from him, even if he just pushed it into the corner.
@@my3dviews Exactly! Him passing it back over his head was just a dumb move. He could have easily just slide the puck into the corner and then slide in on top of it and made them waste time trying to get possession, but instead he lobs the puck backwards over his head right into the waiting stick of the Oilers. I'm sure he didn't mean to pass it to them, he probably thought it was another Stars player in the zone with him but it wasn't and that was his fatal mistake that cost us the game.
@@soulessshadow5356 Actually it didn't cost the Stars the game, it just made it go into overtime, where they did win it. The only difference is that the Oilers got one point instead of none.
Never really noticed how much the puck jumped, tough luck
Also the Star's defensemen fanning on his pass and coughing up the puck for his empty net break away... If Stephan had scored... It would be that defensemen who gave up their chance to even the game with a similar whoopsies play...
@@v4v819 Don't you mean the Oiler's defenseman fanning on the puck?
Turco was also on the Michigan team in 96(?) Where "the Michigan" goal was scored
Nice connection!
Turco's reaction to oilers could have had Kane is referencing. I know with him being retired he doesn't need to use team speak. but a lot of players do when they are retired.
?
I'm with him 100% on...the Stars won. No one ever talks about that. If Stefan shoots from the blue line and misses and they come back and tie it, this is just some random game in the 06-07 season.
For those who are talking about the “puck jump” “wizardry” etc etc, its the fact that the goalie’s crease is extremely choppy. Thats why the puck jumped very unfortunately for Stefan.
Excellent diagnosis!
@Catharsis that was in no way stefans fault
@@thatoneguy9666 it definitely was at least partially Stefan's fault, you don't need to be four inches away to put the puck in an empty net. He got a bad break, but it takes a player having a crisis of confidence to not shoot that puck at the very least from the top of the crease, and... that's what happens
"Thank god" - Patrick Kane.
I was trying to beat the rush and was on my way to the LRT when this goal was scored. Learned that night to never leave my seat before the buzzer.
If the lesson was learned, then it was all worth it! 😉
That hurts!
I was there for that game, it was an amazing game, the atmosphere was crazy.
We can imagine!
It must of been tough going back to the dressing room after that.
Calgary Flames colour commentator Peter Loubardias & Ray Ferraro with probably one of the best calls of all time.
Don't give up good chance for and oilers both looking good for playoff this year so far
So if it wasn’t for Patrick Stefan missing that empty net goal then the Chicago Blackhawks would not have Patrick Kane on their team and help them win 3 Stanley Cups.
never let him live that down i seen this live
I still think Stefan could have been a good player if he wasn't drafted by Atlanta. Sticking an 18 year old on a brand new expansion team that was a mess ownership wise is so unfair.
Well If and kovalchuck and heathy can play good on Atlanta it’s no reason for Stefan not to. Honestly Stefan was screwed from the start injuries, injuries saddest thing is the same goal he blows an empty net he even scored an goal.
How about interviewing Andre "Red Light" Racicot for "I was in net for Tom Draper's flip from centre ice that went between my legs and many more of the softest goals allowed in my memorable career"?
I was at that game. Incredible
This video should include Rod Phillips' call on the Edmonton radio broadcast.
Transcribe it for us!
Turco, what a beauty! “We win the @#%&’n game! Who cares what happened!” LOL. But the miss and tie goal sequence is what’s remembered. 🍻. I get it. It’s an amazing highlight.
You never can tell what moments are going to be remembered.
I legit thought this was gonna be an interview w/ the oilers pulled goalie
Weird seeing Smitty so young and playing for Dallas!
That Mike Smith thing looks scary
As an oilers fan i was pissed about the draft lottery but i realized the oilers wouldn’t have been able to pay for mcdavids contract so its no that bad
Great perspective!
5:31 U just made Patrick Stefan a target for the city of Edmonton.
Just opening up old wounds.
Yes 😂
4:32 : This is the best argument against a curved stick for a goalie... For that one crucial play that determines the game where the difference between a save and a goal was the inch difference that the curvature of your blade took away. I don't understand why goalies would compromise their top priority for a secondary one... Every save is crucial for the win, not a worth while trade off to make this tough task more difficult for the goalie...
Well said! Thanks for sharing!
That one piece of ice near the net: I’m about to ruin this man’s whole career 😈
Mike smith was already in the NHL in 2007? He’s been in the league for a while.
Agreed!
I was there!
FINALLY someone acknowledges that it was an unfortunate bounce! I hate that the broadcasters are so hard on Stefan after the miss. Saying he should be ashamed of himself is jut mean and way rude, especially considering the fact that he tried to do the safest thing possible and skate it into the net and it just happened to bounce over his stick (which was on the ice - as all hockey players are taught to always do -- slight jab at Marchand for his shootout flub hehe). Nothing he could have done.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............. the OTHER net.
I was gonna say like.... how?
Puck: im about to end this man's career.
as an oilers fan i am so mad now finding out that we could've had a better shot at kane if this stefan guy didnt miss the net.
Unintended consequences!
1:44
Thats how my dad tought me how to be a goalie at age 10, a crisp clapper to the cage first try, after that i was catching flies out of the air 😆
That's Canada Fur Ya?
Amazing Kane tie in.
I took my dad to this game. The only live game he ever went to He complained it was too loud lol. He got lost during the 2nd intermission as he couldn’t find his way back from the washroom but he had his ticket and a usher helped
Great game to bring him to!
Yeah, because what the Oilers need is another 1st overall pick.
They’d have wasted Kane like everyone else.
Dallas always had our number... this was just such a great moment and it was against Dallas which made it sweeter.
Still lost lmao
At first I was like how were you in net for an empty net
They gotta do the pavel datsyuk flip goal
Young mike smitty doe!
magnet on puck
Stefan is agent in Europe now he repersent my brother in khl
Neat!
@@CBCSports My dad rowed up the Niagra falls with his wiener.
I just burnt my tongue
Just when you think you've known everything. Kane potentially going to Edmonton is crazy
What day was that???
Plot-twist No one was in net for this empty-net gaffe
🤯
@@CBCSports lol thanks for the reply
Insane that Mike Smith was the other stars goalie
Yakupov or P. Stephan who is the bigger bust?
Technically, NO ONE was in net for this one
Nice one! 🤣
I don't recall filming things with a potato in 2007 🤔
the reason why he didn't shoot it was because he wanted to get all calm and relaxed like the game was over
the second you have a chance to shoot which he did, you pull the trigger... you dont need to blast it, wrist it top shelf, just pop it in end of story
he chose not to, and the hockey gods punished the 1st overall pick, bounces happen all the time
Daaaaammmmmmnnnnnnn!!!! Imagine... Kane
Imagine the Oilers having ANOTHER #1 overall pick.
Turco killed the Canucks with freakish puck handling skills.
Puck jumped on a rocky ice.
Ah yes Marty Turco, the Kalamazoo Legend lol
Can you do sidney Crosby's golden goal
who announced the game?
Ray Ferraro did the color and said "Patrick Stefan you should be ashamed of yourself". Peter Loubardias did the play by play.
Stefan has a goal that night. Then he strips the Edmonton player of the puck... but people will only remember him missing the empty net.
Hey, at least in the end it worked out for the Blackhawks.
Playing the “long game”.
Haha, yep!
My first NFL game in January 2020 the Bruins won the game , yayyy, but Brad Marchand missed and empty net goal wide to the side
If Stefan scored oilers first line would be Kane mcdavid drisital
🤯
My thing is, it's not really Stefan's fault, how many guys are going to be able to react to the puck jumping over their stick with that small amount of room? He did the right thing, try to skate it into the net. He just got unlucky.
Bruins legend Marty Turco
can you really blame Stefan for that ice bump?
That puck jumped up like a frog.
🐸🥅
ya they would have gotten kane, but then they wouldn't get mcdavid, so technically... stefan missing that goal got the oilers mcdavid.
Even deeper wisdom!
How about Kane and McDavid
"Man, take your helmet off."
The puck hopping over his stick is just bad luck, but what makes this play a double face palm is that while he's falling down he passes the puck to the Oilers player and sets up the entire scoring play.
On an unrelated topic, can anyone explain him being drafted first overall? If you look at his stats in the years leading up to the draft, they don't look worthy of even a first rounder, let alone first overall. Someone was smoking the crack pipe in the Thrashers scouting department.
I had no idea Chicago won this game
That was pure bad luck. It did a little jump before he put it in the net
