As a philosophy major, the love for #history comes as a second nature. Luckily for me, my commanding officer (wife) got me this piece of history for my 35th birthday.

Congratulations from a Vietnam era veteran and son of a WWII veteran that served in the Solomon Islands 1943-44 (Guadalcanal and Tulagi) Having once owned an M1 Garand myself and being the generation that followed the "Greatest Generation" that rifle has a special place in my heart and it's symbolism as well is not lost on me. You are indeed fortunate to be the steward of such a fine representation of a pivotal period in this country's existence. Your wife is a good woman to gift something like this to you. I sent mine to the CMP a couple years ago for a full restoration. New Criterion barrel, new stock, everything parkerized... and for a very reasonable cost. Very much on par with yours. Very, very happy with it
I sent my 1903A3 off to them last December. HUGE price increases and a 6 month wait time before you can even send it.

Been watching this for the past two weeks in anticipation for my expert grade. She will arrive this weekend and I cannot wait. It has been a long time coming. For those who are on the fence, do not hesitate! These rifles are amazing, hold such historical significance and belong in anyone's safe. They do not last long so get one while you can!
Very nice and soooo fun to shoot. I received a service grade from CMP with a new CMP stock. I really didn't care for the "dry" look of the stock and added two coats of boiled linseed oil right over the existing coating and was a great improvement. The wood looks much "richer" now.
I would have like to have gotten the field grade, however they were sold out by the time we could afford it, costing us few more bones.

@@Pogi_Konjo Were you told that field grade was backordered like I was and offered the upgrade to service grade? I ordered in August 2021 and finally received last week. Took over 7 months since date of delivery of order package.
I did the same thing. I do think it made it look much better.
Great to see another M1 go to an American citizen. I bought my H&R Garand in 1986 from the DCM (US ARMY) for $165. Good investment, I wish Federal would restart ammo production for the M1.
I also wish the feds would sell us ammo.
I bought my '55 H&R from the last batch of Greek returns. That shipment included a few crates of unissued H&R rifles that still had the original silver foil/paper wraps.

I also purchased an M1 from the CMP back in 2016 and it was a service grade with a new stock. The rifle was built in December 1941 at Springfield Armory.
Sounds like mine, My Winchester Service production serial number falls within the Pearl Harbor attack. Imagine assembling this on the line knowing we just went to war!!!!
I love the M-1 as I trained with it at Ft Dix NJ in 1960. I owned six of them now down to three . I always enjoyed shooting the M-1 . This video shows a beautiful specimen and I knw he will get untold years of shooting satisfaction and enjoyment
I envy you, wanted to buy one myself but unfortunately prices jumped up out of my range. Tell me if you would. Did you have any problems with ammunition? I have always heard that you needed military grade ammunition for it?

Very nice! Checking the date of your video I received my SA Expert from CMP almost exactly at the same time as you, the difference being you have a much lower serial number, about 2 million below mine. Mine was made in Jan. 1944, while your was made in July 1942 as near as I can tell.
I’m just now sanding it out and putting a half dozen coats of BLO on it which really pops the grain. Thanks for sharing brother. 👍🙏

I bought a rack grade M1 from the CMP just recently and I was surprised at how good of shape it's in, only two pretty bad gouges I could see on the stock, and one hand guard is cracked, but the metal is phenomenal. I opened up the case and handed it to my Grandfather and said "see if this seems familiar to you." Mine is a Korean War era. Grandpa went to both Korea and Vietnam.

She's a beauty. I bought a Danish VAR re-barrel back in 2002. Mine's a great shooter. That's a family heirloom now.

Looks great and really well made. Probably much higher quality than what was mass produced back in the day. Of rifles of this era, i've only fired the Lee Enfield Mk. IV, but it was an antique example (in 1990's), hanging on for grim death and in need of a rebuild/refurb. On the 60 yard range it was still grouping well considering it's age.
Oh the history behind the rifle and the gun nut in me is spazzing out for how cool it is and how the bayonet lock point is still their and oh the ping 🤤
Our platoon in the 1980s received the M16A2 rifle ( new actually at the time ) a very accurate rifle, I do love the M1

Just got mine a month or so ago, Expert 30.06. It felt like Christmas all over and can't wait to go shoot it. Need to break it down, inspect and clean and lube. Love shooting the M14 during MC matches so I picked up a M1A a few years ago but always wanted to get the Garand. Semper Fi brother, great video

That 30-06 Springfield as I’m sure many know was the mainstay side arm and light machine gun cartridge of the US Military from WWI through the Korean War. It was initially replaced in Vietnam by the 7.62x51 NATO (308 Winchester) utilized both in the M60 light machine gun and the M-14 battle rifle, which of course was itself replaced by the M-16 in 5.56 mm NATO.

Great video! I am fortunate to have been able to acquire a Springfield and later a Harrington & Richardson Garand from the CMP. Some collectors prefer used GI stocks, but I love the look of the CMP stocks and freshly parkerized parts. These are reworked WW2 weapons but they look brand new inside and out. Shooting these rifles is an absolute delight as well. Garand food can be a bit hard on the wallet, but it is definitely worth it!

The greatest battle implement ever devised. I absolutely love mine and although I have ar 15 and 10s If I had to give up all but one or had to grab one to go on serious business to protect my love ones or myself, the m1 garand would be the one I reach for. The sights are awsome and your not going to accidentally knock them off zero and I can shoot 1 to 1 1/2 inch bullseye groups at 100yrds with the open sights which is really all I can get out of most of my rifles that have optics. I have never squeezed the trigger and not had a bang with my m1 garand.

I majored in philosophy, naturally I have an interest in history for this reason I went with the 30 ought and I asked CMP for a Springfield for my birthday and they delivered. This rifle will be a family heirloom, although I was thinking of getting a replica to hang on my wall next to Model 1840 (Army NCO Sword and Scabbard).
@@Pogi_Konjo That Sword and Scabbard are definitely historically important items and keep sakes. I am no scholar of history but do have more than a passing interest in US history. In particular WWII. Politically I’m a hodgepodge mix of Christian conservatism, US Constitution/ and a streak of libertarian for good measure. This could entail a long and interesting conversation. I respect and admire the M1 and it certainly is a pristine example judging by the pictures. You’ve done a very good job rubbing that down with Linseed oil. I’d enjoy keeping in touch with you if that’s agreeable to you. All the best to you and your family. I’m out.

This is definitely on my list of guns to buy, I'm getting all the basic requirements needed to qualify for one right now and plan on getting a high grade model, I'm very excited. My grandfather has a Garand and I've wanted one since I was a kid, I'm pretty stoked to finally have one.
what is needed to qualify?
like any other weapon purchase, although you need to be part of some kind of weapon organization. For example, the CMP, DAV, or have served in the military.
Mine didn’t come in a fancy plastic case, and had to use oven cleaner to degrease the stock, but I only paid $300 for it, too. And what a great shooter.
I'm a vet too and the M1 was my drill weapon in boot camp. I put off buying one from CMP for years and recently sold my M1 Carbine at a gun show and picked up a Garrand at the same show. It appears to be a CMP build in .308 and I'm working on verifying that through Anniston. Nice case but I'm disappointed that the stock set wasn't oiled.

Understandable....ammo prices are very disappointing. However, lack of ammo doesn't prevent you from holding her. 🥰
I was in ROTC in high school, 1968-1969. Our sergeant major was back from Vietnam and issued each one of us the M-1Garand, to tear down and reassemble. He was sent back to Vietnam in late 1969, and told us before he left that in addition the M-16, many of the soldiers carried their M-1s. At that time the M-16 had serious problems with jams and dirt, the M-1 was the plan B and did its job. Our sergeant survived Vietnam and came back home
US armed most of its allies at the time, as well as almost the whole ARVN south Vietnam with M1s, m1 carbine and M2 carbine, and Thompson's.

I recommend getting a stock finishing kit from Garand Gear in either the Tung oil or Linseed oil whichever you prefer. Definitely makes your wood look Amazing.

Semi-auto, eight bullets/cartridge, lightweight, reliable, fast shooting Mr. Garand did great that Kling OMG and far better than the bold action and slow the Germans have Mauzer and the Kar and if I remember correctly the Japanize had the Arisaka!!? Anyways I wish I have one and go to the shooting range with it thanks for the great unboxing have fun pal!!👍👍👏👏

Nice rifle, good shooting with it! I have 4 of them, I compete with them. It appears that CMP is out of GI stocks. It looks to be a Boyd’s stock but seems Boyd’s has got them closer to GI specs, the “back porch” looked better than some of the after market stocks. Again, good shooting!

MAN! The CMP has really upped the game! I got mine in a cardboard box wrapped in shipping paper. Stock was in horrible shape, somebody had taken an orbital sander to the butt to take off what I presume was a rack number. I took it all apart and re-finished it putting 3 coats of CASEYS TRUE OIL on it, turned out beautifully. Of course it wasn’t the CMP in 1990, it was the DCM and I only paid $165 for it.😃 Barrel date of May 1944, it’s a dream to shoot, you’re gonna love it, congratulations and happy birthday!
Thank you brother. I honestly thought it would come in a soft cover, but I was surprised to see this case. Its actually a decent case, not comparable to stuff like pelican or anything, but it’s hefty and serves its purpose. $165? I wish it was still those prices.

I loved firing the M-1 Garand. I had six of them at one time. They function well with all the brands of ammunition eve popular civilian brands of 30-:06. Once DCM was dropped and changed the operation over to CMP the prices took large increase.

The CMP is the best deal out there even with increasing prices. Anywhere else, a Garand is double at a minimum.
That’s interesting, I seen an advertisement from the VA once about how the CMP offers these up to vets, but this was years ago and I finally was able to get one.
@@Pogi_Konjo The problem is that we have flippers who abuse the CMP program. Bunch of Parasites. I would lock down 1 rifle per SS number. Pretty soon M1s will cost 4 or 5000 dollars for field grade and people won't shoot them & especially with rising ammo costs.
@@jmd1743 I agree, they shouldn’t be allowed to do that, but some people have no respect for history. Also, it is true, I’m having a hard time finding ammo just about everywhere I’ve looked.

@@jmd1743 Ideally, CMP should further reduce the number of rifles sold to an individual. Unfortunately, they need income given their operation and currency creation has perverted market prices higher. $1,000 is now a steal for a Garand but sadly out of reach for many. What little M2 Ball load is available is approaching double the cost of .308 Winchester. Eventually, there will be no more Garands to repatriate just as happened with M1903 and M1917 rifles. US service rifles have become an affluent hobby and it's a shame.
CMP has obviously upgraded the cases since when I bought my last two Garands. It's a super reliable and durable rifle, but it has it's limitations. Granted, I have "D" model with scope, but it's limited too.
Well your D model for it's class it has favorable characteristics. Compared to something like a Bolt action sniper/lightweight marksman rifle it has higher capacity, shot speed and reload time.
When used in it's intended role it is a very usable design.
But if you're thinking room clearing and home defense usage you're gonna experience those limitations you're speaking of.
They apparently have. The one I got a few years ago had the green case with padding that looked like an off-the-shelf hard case with a CMP logo stamped into it.
The CMP is THE source for an M-1 rifle. I have several M-1s, 03a1s, 03a3 and a 1917 all from CMP. I got my first when they cost about $120. My shooter is a 1944 SA correct grade with a SA 1963 barrel "0". The weapons are all functioned checked, the people at CMP are fantastic, and they will advise you if you visit the store. After I retired from the Army, the State of Ohio hired me at Camp Perry. The folks of the CMP gave me a real education on the M-1 for free to include serial numbers, variations, and diagram numbers. CMP=GREAT FOLKS!

Just got my expert grade last week (also SA). Only about a 1 month turnaround from the time I sent in my order form. Im about to treat the stock with some linseed oil and really make this thing as beautiful as it can be
I have a feeling that It’ll be immaculate.
Picked mine up when they opened back up to the public. Treated mine with linseed oil as well. The wood grain on the CMP stock is awesome.
@@runeklok I just got some linseed oil in from on online order. I was thinking about doing a video for it, but I never done it before. Is it as simple as just wiping it on from what I been seeing?
@@Pogi_Konjo Yeah, it is fairly simple and does a better job than traditional wood stain. I picked some linseed oil up from the hardware store and bought some paper towel for mine.
Simply put about half a spoon full on a towel and rub the stock down. When you apply it, press down on the stock to get the best coverage. Continue until the oil appears to be gone entirely from the towel. I did that about 2-3 times per day for about 3 days, letting the stock dry every night afterwards. Looks really nice and really makes the gun look like it just got issued. Make sure you don't touch the stock while it is drying though, it tends to affect the finish if you handle the stock before it is dried. I put mine in my safe, handling just the barrel and butt plate and left it for the day.

A nice restocked example. I would recommend applying a couple coats of pure tung oil (not tung oil finish) then when its fully cured hit it with some paste wax.

@@Pogi_Konjo If you use pure linseed oil it will dry slower, If you use Boiled Linseed oil it will dry about the same time (and dry completely faster). I like Tung oil better but that is a matter of preference (or a forum argument).
the old way to remember how to finish a stock is:
once a day for a week,
once a week for a month,
and once a month for a year.
However that will get you a high quality hunting gun finish, you'll probably only want to go a week or two into the once a week for a month step, just depends on how it absorbs and the look you want.

I was able to squeeze out one of the last service grade garands. New production stock, 1/43 receiver and 6/44 barrel. I was super happy. Looks about the same as your expert grade, minus the fact you got a new barrel…
Awesome! That’s really great to hear, I hope you’re enjoying it. Also, if you want a new barrel you could also just replace it yourself, but I’m pretty sure you already knew that. I would have saved a bunch had I gotten a service grade.
@@Pogi_Konjo I think it’s kinda neat that it has an “originalish” barrel, and mostly ww2 parts. It’s good for 2.5” groups at 100 yards. What I might do is get an expert grade in 308, sell off the stock, and get a original stock for my service grade. Money, but if you look at the price of garands 12 years ago in iv8888’s cmp store video, they’ll only go up.

I hope whoever had inspected it became jealous.
Make sure you use M2 Ball Ammo,Other 30.06 rounds will mess up the components in your rifle because it is over-gassed and not meant for a vintage rifle like the Garand,Trust
