  • The rock and roll world has lost one of its greatest guitarists after the announcement of Eddie Van Halen’s death on October 6, 2020. The virtuoso performer died of a stroke, but he had been battling numerous health ailments over the years. Van Halen had been struggling with alcoholism and drug abuse throughout his career, as he began drinking and smoking at the age of 12. He has also undergone hip replacement surgery and was diagnosed with tongue lung and throat cancer. Van Halen was also recently hospitalized in 2019 and he had to postpone tour dates in Japan. Here’s what the last 12 months of his life were like.

Abe Froman Grunge said that is what Eddie said. And indeed, Eddie said that. Eddie swore it was the pics and not the smoking. It seems like the pics were at least part of the issue as the cancer did start at the place where he held the pics. That said, while I’m sure smoking and drugs also played a part, what Grunge said is accurate, that is what Eddie said.

My feelings exactly. No matter what tour, the SoCal shows were always the best. They personified SoCal during the era like no one else. The first time I saw them was playing to about 150 people at a backyard party in Long Beach when they were called Mammoth. Five years later I watched them play to almost 400,000 people at US '83. To them, the US Festival was just the ultimate backyard party.

Ed's passing does hurt, but look at the legacy and music he graced us with. What a treasure; what a wonderful soundtrack to all of us kids from the 70's and 80's who were all thinking that there was no one band greater than Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen came along when the music world needed him and he answered the call gloriously. I can still recall vividly getting my first Van Halen album (it was actually VH II) and thinking to myself that this was the greatest thing since the Playboy centerfold. Still do (Van Halen, not Playboy).
I think we will all have to take time to mourn EVH's passing but in the mean time, throw on some VH, crank up the volume, and be grateful that the music will last for ages to come.
God bless the Van Halen family. R.I.P. Eddie.

I couldn't even picture how he played these sounds. I picked up my guitar and started to try and imitate those sounds. 40+ years later and I still strive to reach his level of musical genius. I was lucky enough to see VH live in 1980 in L.A. I stood in the second row motionless and just stared at Eddie's hands. His mastery influenced my whole life. A large piece of me passed with him. The first albums with DLR, all have a special meaning to them, and the music is intertwined with HS (1978-1982) and all the partying and cruising we did back in the day. While I haven't followed VH for years, the passing of Eddie, makes my childhood that much more distant, and how we are all on this Earth for a finite time. Van Halen was a HUGE part of the soundtrack of my teen years in the 80’s, and I always loved their videos on MTV. Every video they did, Eddie had that grin on his face and you could tell he was honestly having a blast! A few years ago I started learning to play the guitar on my FIL’s old ‘62 Gibson Melody Maker until my wife sold it to a collector. I said I would get another guitar of my own and yesterday I got a smoking deal on a used and modified Stratocaster at a pawn shop. Somebody had put in B.C. Rich humbuck pickups and had to cut the pick guard up to make it work, so I now have my own “Frankenstrat”. Eddie’s passing gave me the motivation to start learning again, along with it being therapy for me from my wife passing away on 9/5/18. R.I.P. Eddie!

Nice piece, very positive, no emphasis on the negative, something rarely seen in the media these days, RIP Eddie. Back in the early 70's if you went to high school anywhere close to
Pasadena and went to a high school dance chances are the band playing was Mammoth featuring EVH. He absolutely shredded the guitar with his playing. Gave me the inspiration to learn how to play.
Unfortunately I had no talent & sucked but kept at it for 30+years.

I feel like a member of my family just passed away. Certainly part of my youth just died along with Ed. There's so much I emulated and watched wide eyed: the '81 Oakland videos on MTV, waiting for the MTV premiere of Panama, making cut out guitars from plywood and painting them with stripes, doing the bent legged jumps off of my bed, staring at the photos of VH at the US Festival in the pages of Circus and Hit Parader....it just goes on and on. Rock in Peace, Eddie. You'll never be forgotten.

Rest in power & peace Eddie Van Halen, thank you for all the car songs we sang together for a couple thousand miles, those epic guitar screeches and wails, head bobs, and my air guitar licks. You left a very high mark, many will try to copy you, like every picker before has, but only your Wolfe has that EVH DNA, and only he should carry the blessings of your talent forward with the band. Peace to you, no more pain, or tears in Heaven.

At least Ed is not in any more pain. That is one way to look at it because this latest battle had been ongoing for 5 years. As a second recurrence, it would have been quite aggressive. He fought it amidst debilitating pain. He must have endured a lot. Our family took comfort that there was no more pain and suffering when a loved one died from cancer. It's a hideous disease that causes immense suffering to the patient and family.
