      Yeah exactly. What’s keeping them from getting jeans that fall where their hips are supposed to be located. Just because their stomachs would hang over the top that’s not a reason not to wear them according to their logic. They think they won’t look good in them so no one should wear them because they are the ones who don’t like how they think they make their bodies look. So they must think they look bad. It’s not other people doing that to them. And they deny the very fat phobia they themselves struggle with. They have to find a solution to serious cognitive dissonance they’re experiencing.

    I argued with a woman just like this last night in a crocheting group. She didn't find it fair that independent creators charged more for bigger sized clothing, and thought that the prices for smaller sizes should be increased so that fat people don't need to pay a "fat tax" for their size. Im working on something right now where every row takes me an extra 30 minutes, making a clothing garment that is even one size bigger can take extra HOURS. I wear a s/xs in shirts and I find it so unfair that they think smaller people should have to pay more so that they don't have to. The amount of projection and wrong information in her arguments was unreal.Everything from "fat people can be healthy!" "fat people are just naturally fat!" and "no one owes you health!" and brutal skinny shaming was absolutely crazy. The delusion is unreal.
    End of rant, I just never expected to run into so much drama, hostility, and misinformation in a crochet discussion

      Wow! I wouldn't have expected that either. I sew a lot of my own clothing, so I see the effort & planning & grading to change sizes in a sensible way (instead of just adding an inch at every seam, ignoring scale and proportion) and the cost of fabric & thread & other notions...most people that complain about clothing prices have NO clue...but you'd think someone who is themselves a crafter would understand the concept!

      @victoriadiesattheend.8478 Před rokem +36

      Honestly I am not surprised. Its sad because I would HOPE that someone in a crocheting group would A.) Actually want to be there and so would attempt to be pleasant and friendly over a shared interest, the way I would try to behave in settings just like that one, and B.) Since this person DOES understand the basics of sewing and creating an item using such techniques, that they would UNDERSTAND WHY a larger piece of clothing would cost more money.
      But she couldn't, because her bitterness is in the way. She doesn't want a "fat tax" because she likely believes she's "suffered" enough as a fat person and therefore wants "skinnies" to pay more for their clothing in a form of revenge AND as a money saver for people like herself. And because she would prefer to be delusional about WHY she is fat, this person has bought completely into this idea that her being fat has NOTHING to do with her own actions or decision making regarding her diet and exercise. Unfortunately now even some really spineless (or greedy) doctors now spout this party line about "health at every size" bc they need to have patients and not get sued over words and advice that triggers fat patients. So that emboldens other professional people and companies to say the same. The echo chamber they have created is EVERYWHERE - even in your crocheting group. It has become more and more prevalent.

      It's that same entitlement as wanting plane seats to be bigger and therefore raising cost of tickets for all passengers, so they don't have to pay for two seats. The fact, they demand other people subsidise costs of their lifestyle choices (or results of those choices) is what always gets me

    • @jd5368
      @jd5368 Před rokem +41

      I sew and crochet as a hobby, and have had to be firm about my decision not to make clothes for other people because I just don't want to deal with people getting upset about bigger sizes costing more. The problem with selling handcrafted goods is that you ALREADY have to charge way more than what people are used to paying for a similar store-bought item, or else you are working for pennies or even taking a loss. There's only so much you can raise your prices before people are unwilling to pay. If you are running a small business by yourself and you don't have a huge volume of sales, it's a lot harder to make the costs even out across different sizes. I'm at the point where if someone complains about different sizes costing more, I will offer to send them some resources to get started making their own clothes, and suggest that they can save money by doing it themselves and cutting out the cost of the labor.

They think it’s the worlds job to mold to them when in reality it’s their job to deal with the world. The only people you can reasonably expect to care about what “triggers” you or “offends” you is people you actually have a close personal relationship with: family, close friends, a partner etc. They don’t get that. They think strangers are supposed to give a shit about their feelings and alter their speech and their choices to suit their sensibilities. It’s not how the world works. Actually, as a redhead, let me butt in:
    Studies show that redheads have a complicated relationship to pain. Higher pain tolerance, but less sensitive to anesthesia therefore requiring more. This is the case for me especially with dental work!
    This is NOT because of the red hair. This is because whatever gene that causes red hair, likely also causes me to have a different reaction to pain and pain meds.
    Unlike being fat, where the issues are being caused BY the fat. These are 2 very different things, one, a genetic factor outside of my control causes 2 separate traits, and the other is something within her control (being obese) which is causing the issues (worse health outcomes).

    I feel like this needs to be said- sorry for the RANT: I have had anorexia in all of it's forms ( atypical and nervosa) for over 15 years- what you need to learn for full recovery, is to really work hard to change your mentality of being triggered by everyone ELSE's actions. This comes in the forms of not following those who post before and after pics, or anything like that. YOU- key word being YOU, need to learn how to deal with a world that doesn't have an ED or is not triggered by something like a pic and there is NO WAY you can ever fully recover if your recovery is predicated on OTHERS actions or on THEM changing. Some people find before and after pics inspiring and uplifting. Who the EFF am I to say that they shouldn't have that content or create that content because of my disordered eating and body image??? that makes NO real sense and is not realistic. Also, as a side note- It is so lazy and annoying to have these 'activists' and 'researchers' tell people that everyone is at IMMEDIATE risk for EDs like they can be caught like a cold...it just doesn't work this way.

    • @neonk2222

People like us who end up in years long battles with EDs were neurologically primed for that to happen and often go through trauma and have co morbid mental illnesses. It’s so complex. Looking at a weight loss photo can’t give someone an ED. I developed mine without any influence from social media. It was only once I already had it that I unfortunately started using the internet to propel me along the dark path.
      6 years later still trying to recover and no matter how many triggers I avoid I won’t recover unless I do the work MYSELF. As you said.

    1:55 fun fact but it’s actually true that red heads have health problems. As a ginger, I know because of my genetics that I have a higher risk of skin cancer due being more sensitive to vitamin D exposure/consumption. There’s also little things like pain medicine not working as well and also being more likely to overdose on anaesthesia if a surgeon is not careful. The thing is, these issues aren’t due to having red hair (red hair is just the byproduct of having the recessive gene). No amount of dying my hair will get rid of these factors as it’s baked into my biology but I will still make the effort to put sunscreen on and to not stay in the sun for too long.
    That’s not to say I don’t get mean comments about my hair, freckles, pale ass skin, I do but I can’t change those factors without spending money that will temporarily change my appearance. Losing weight is free and, when done right, is healthy. Tanning my skin, putting a shit ton on foundation on my freckles and bleaching my hair is expensive and damaging :/

This was bad enough but then we move onto the "many people" argument which doesn't make any attempt to actually qualify or quantify anything in its vagueness. This means nothing she says can be put into an arguable perspective for relative impact in order to support that the overall picture deserves the term "nuanced". If all of her concerns are 5% of the picture then that's practically worthless. She's throwing conceptual fragments up in the air in hopes that something sticks. And she's going for a Ph.D?
