      And what about during the COVID lockdown? Where I lived, every gym and other public leisure facility was closed, so no-one, not even the allegedly 'rich' people could go to them, but we were still allowed to go out walking/jogging once a day. So instead of hitting my local pool I walked for an hour along the river near where I lived; it's a large, open space so social distancing was no problem, and it cost me absolutely zero pence. And I also had a Pilates DVD workout that I did at home (I think I bought that one about ten years ago, in a bargain bin for about a fiver.) Lack of money can certainly put up many barriers in life, but preventing people from taking exercise is *definitely* not one of them!

    The 'my bloodwork is great!' argument is so insidious because it's not about being sick RIGHT NOW, it's about putting yourself at higher risk for developing things LATER. These "my bloodwork is great" people are always invariably in their twenties or early thirties. Like yeah, fam, your bloodwork may be great NOW, but stay at this size and it WON'T be in 10-20 years, is what we're saying. It's about mitigating risk factors. My bloodwork is fine too, but I'm working to lose the weight because I understand that I'm at greater RISK at my current size. And the fact that health is considered mentally and mobility wise. Being 300+ lbs you cannot have the best mobility (plus having 600+ lbs on your joints as joints experience your weight as times two.) And since obesity is linked to unhealthy processed foods avoided of healthy nutrients it commonly makes people more likely to be depressed. So being 300+ lbs can mean you cannot be healthy as your joints are experiencing faster ware and tear while your mentality is going down. Other points too but ya know.

I've started trying to eat less processed food in the last year and in addition to my weight loss as a result (82lbs so far!) I've found that my depression and anxiety are also WAY more manageable! Your brain is really sensitive to the quality of the foods you eat, so someone coming in for medicine for a mental issue like ADHD (which I also have) for medication being told about possible dietary solutions is not "out of the blue medical fatphobia," it's a doctor doing his job. Ugh.

      I think some ppl have a fundamental disconnect where they don't understand that Drs don't owe them emotional labour over the efficient performance of their duties.
      They don't even owe bedside manner, if they're not, you know, literally at their bedside (that 1 is a _really_ frequent source of confusion).
      It can be tactically useful to help keep the patient listening, & thus improve the chances of a positive outcome, but it's not a core duty. Their core duty is the truth, & the truth is that being in a permanent inflammatory state effects the body on a holistic level, which _is_ a physician's concern to discuss - no matter what the patient went in for. Drs are more than vending machines where a patient selects whatever they want to hear & it gets dispensed.
      The fact that some Drs really _are_ shit at listening to fat ppl's genuine symptoms + pain (especially if it's a woman) just is so frustrating, because it muddies the water.
      Keep going, honey. You're doing so well. ❤

      @@mysterylovescompany2657 exactly. the medical doctors are not here to hurt nor help your feelings, they are simply doing their job by tending to you medically. therapists are the people to go to for your emotions, and even then, therapists are not here to make your feel better about yourself in the denial youre in. they are going to break down your emotions and get to the root of your issues so you can then work TOGETHER to overcome present and future issues. the main thing that they are totally unwilling to do is be honest and cooperate with their doctor. you may not like what they have to say but what good is going to the doctor if youre not willing to listen to them anymore the moment they speak about weight. dont discredit a doctor because youre unwilling to change your habits. im pretty sure if you asked them not to speak abt your weight and to make a note of it they would respect your wishes. I’m a doctor and it’s so so hard watching these videos where people with no credentials argue that being obese or morbidly obese isn’t unhealthy. I don’t believe BMI is the best measure of health and I don’t believe that people should be treated as lesser just because they’re fat but they’re putting their health and lives at risk and, worse, encouraging others to not take care of themselves. Most people in the fat activist/fat acceptance movement appear to be quite young at the minute, of course their bloods are fine now but they’re putting themselves at risk of heart attacks and diabetes and physical joint problems.
    Also as a personal anecdote, when I have spoken to patients in their 40s, 50s and 60s etc they accept their weight is mostly down to the choices they have made (“oh I had a lot of takeaways due to x, y or z” “I let myself go and stopped taking care of myself when I had kids”) without me even bringing it up but I feel like the fat acceptance movement would just blame the doctors and medical fatphobia for not being able to help them?

    • @BeckBeckGo
      @BeckBeckGo Před 2 lety +1

      So when you argue BMI isn't a good measure of health, I want to know more about this. BMI isn't a good measure of BODY FAT, I'll give you that. Because an athlete or body builder may have a higher BMI than their measurements or appearance suggests (Triathlete here).
      But I always wanted to know. Does BMI help uncover health issues that are unrelated to musculature or obesity? What if a very skinny patient has a BMI of, say, 29. Could that possibly help uncover the presence of a mass that may have gone undetected otherwise? Is this negligible? I'm so curious about the edge cases.
      This is why I think BMI is important. Because if your body composition and size is incongruent with your BMI, this could be a sign of a potential health condition? I've always wondered this.

They were all pretty active and normal in their 20's and 30's, and then it was a horrifying spiral of mobility problems, injuries that wouldn't heal, and chronic health conditions that needed constant medication. It's just not a fun existence, your doctor isn't being mean by trying to help you avoid a future full of pain and disability. There is one thing that a lot of people struggle to admit nowadays, it's that beauty isn't totally subjective. There are common physical traits that are considered attractive since the dawn of times. And a slim, healthy body is one of them. Or a curvy body, voluptuous but NOT obese. A bright/smooth skin, luminous eyes, ivory teeth, thick or silky hair, those features can be found in all skin tones, eyes and hair colors. It's just a common thing, what we find attractive is often a healthy body. Being morbidly obese is not attractive for most people, because it literally screams "bad health". We kinda unconsciously learned to not find rolls of fat, rotten teeth or yellow eyes attractive. It doesn't mean that a person with such features deserves to be bullied, not at all. But it's just a basic human tendency to recognize health as a positive trait, and to link health and beauty 🤷

    • @amaramoramei9959
      @amaramoramei9959 Před 2 lety +6

      Beauty is definitely subjective, the way I see it. Rather that there is social beauty standards (things agreed upon by a number big enough to impact society) and personal beauty standards (your own preferences and stuff), and even then both are subjective from society to society, society to person and from person to person. Being fat for example is not the most common thing, but I remember in my early 10's (I'm 20 now) finding out about areas in a neighbour country that had "fat farms" where they would take girls and women to get fattened up cause that was what was considered attractive, I'm talking 300-500 pounds heavy, it's been 10 years now so maybe the standard changed there, I don't know. And even in my country for a brief epoch, in my grandparents time. Obese women were desired mostly for the association with the privilege of having so much food at their disposal that they could engorge their bodies, but of course women needed to still be mobile and able.
      In both countries obese women were never and still are not the majority of the population, though.
      And I recall somewhat rotten teeth has also been a beauty standard in some parts of the east, don't know about the western societies. But there's not a universal normalization of beauty standards.
      Edit: but I agree that one objective trait in a person that will impact their desirability will always be health. 👍

      @MelC-td9bg Před 2 lety +1

      @@amaramoramei9959 I absolutely agree with you that some cultures praised very fat women as a desirable trait, and yes there are features that can be found attractive in some places and eras, that aren't nowadays. About rotten teeth: it's not that rotten teeth were seen as attractive, it's that in Eastern countries they loved blackened or tinted teeth (they chewed betel nuts for example, and it gave a yellowish/orangey tone to the teeth. Or in Japan, they blackened their teeth.) But it was the teeth color, not the general shape/health of the mouth. A truly rotten row of teeth have never been an attractive trait if I recall correctly. So yes, beauty can be subjective, but I stand by my point: it's often a matter of aesthetic, but when it comes to obvious health issues translated in physical features, it's not seen as attractive, minus some exceptions of course. Paleolithic folks goddesses statues were morbidly obese for the record. But I think that it was more of a symbolic thing and I really doubt that our Cro Magnon female ancestors were morbidly obese, because they lived a forceful healthy life in a sense (lots of walking, healthy organic/raw food, no sugar, etc etc)

    Adderall is a stimulant. That means that it could have sideffects that include heightening blood pressure and heart arrhythmia. Weight does bring with it it’s own blood pressure and heart disease risks so this was actually right on topic for an adderall perscription renewal to include. Like I am a very healthy, active, and young woman and I still had to get an ECG and have to regularly measure my blood pressure just to be on the safe side. Of course a doctor needs to bring up risk factors with the medication you are taking and steps you can take to minimize those risks.

Doctors are concerned about dosing correctly so checking body weight to see if a) your dose is high enough or if it b) is too high. One of the things they keep an eye on especially if you are on the lower end of average is if you’re losing too much weight or losing weight too fast as a result of the adderall. Both can be indicators of too high a dose or potentially abusing the drug or even trying to use it for weight loss.

    If you have enough the time to film a tik tok you have the time to drop to the ground and do some push ups. It won't burn hardly any calories, but over time you may build some muscles if you progressively improve and challenge yourself. Then with more muscles comes a slightly higher bmr.
    If you have enough money to eat in that much excess you have enough money to buy rice, beans, frozen veggies, and a multivitamin (though most fat people give no regard to nutrition to begin with) and eat at a reasonable level.
    Fat people just don't want to give up the food. Thats why "diets don't work"...because people think you just do it to slim down and then you can go back to eating like you did before....and somehow they expect to not go back to the same size they were before. If you fix your diet (note I didn't say go on a diet) you will lose weight if you do it properly.

    Responding to Vergie Tovar’s statement regarding the paintings of morbidly obese women that were popular in the renaissance , I do not claim to be a history expert but I’m pretty certain that women who were heavy happened to be women who could afford to to eat and were more likely to be upper class in a starving population of poor people , so naturally the idea to be big would be associated with social status or class during this period , so that’s probably why obese women were painted to begin with , now being thin is harder to obtain than being heavy so it’s not deemed as desirable as when in the Renaissance .

I’m low middle class. I eat fruits and veggies like crazy. Hell, a massive bag of carrots was $1.50. A massive bag of apples $4.99. Vegan microwavable “chicken” nuggets a family size is $5.00. Oatmeal is SUPER cheap, too. And… DUH, rice and beans. Classics. SUPER affordable. Can be spiced up and eaten so many ways.
    Like… it’s possible. It is within reach. And if you don’t wanna eat well, then don’t. There’s literally ZERO problem with that. But like you said, don’t say you can’t when you won’t. Just own it.
