Black woman here. Obesity is prevalent in our communities due to food deserts and how normalized over-sugaring and over-feeding ourselves has become.
Part of it is political, sure, (food deserts), but a larger part of it is strictly because our communities have said it’s okay. We are not “naturally fatter”- Our communities have a lack of nutrition education, and it HAS to change if we want to stop dying of high blood pressure by age 50.
I don’t like that she’s making it seem like obesity is natural for Black folk (or for anyone). Normalizing it IS the problem.

They don't have lack of nutrition education. Libraries, the back of food labels. Most schools in the US have a cooking course or nutrition course (varies from each state and federal funding). It's about educating yourself, but I understand how the "lack of education" could come from not caring about what goes into your body, and the normalization of unhealthy beauty standards such as fat ass little waist, or being "thick" in general.

Black woman here! Honestly I don't know much about black people in the USA. I was born in Senegal (West Africa). I swear I have seem very few people being "fat". So this whole idea of black people "naturally" being fat is ridiculous. Now I have lived both in Italy and France, still most african people I know are slim, someone is on the chubby side, but very few are obese. This whole rhetoric about fatphobia and blackness is insane. People in the USA are fat because their food is basically garbage (junk food, food chains, high level of sugar).

@@aishaluminsa6505 It is kind of understandable from an evolutionary perspective though.
I’m very interested in psychology and philosophy and one of the videos that popped up on my feed is a man who traveled throughout the African veldt and sub-Saharan Africa. He met several protected tribes that lived traditionally as hunter-gatherers or precipice livestock communities such as the Himba. He asked them existential questions about the meaning of life, what happens in death, and their place within our universe and it was very enlightening to consider that this was how a majority of people thought for thousands of years prior to industrial society.
One of the answers to the meaning of life was food for the Hunter-gatherers. This makes sense as in the dry seasons and the coming and going of local prey animals in migration, these people would constantly be moving to follow the food supply as you can easily starve if you miss your opportunities in the dry season. This opposed to the consistently fertile lands in the river valleys with constant rain supplies. It made sense that these peoples would highly value food and the ability to hunt.
Another interesting thing to note is that these dry seasons also made trade with the outside world a grueling and punishing process due to the inconsistencies of the African river ways and lack of natural ports to trade from.
The harshness of the African landscape compared to the North American landscape when it came to trade and soil fertility largely impacts how African cultures value food.
With how recent globalization and the ease of immigration from now compare to 500 years ago, it’s interesting to see how these ancient and local cultures interact with our modern multicultural and abundant society.

I lost 50lbs without doing anything except intermittent fasting. I changed literally nothing else about my lifestyle. Didn't even workout. And I certainly didn't make ANY additional purchases. If anything, I saved money because I didn't buy as much food as before. I also saved time, because I wasn't spending as much time preparing/picking up/eating food.

You can love your body AS IS and still put in the effort to care for it, make sure it will last, make sure you are TRULY living your best life (instead of just saying you are while being dead inside). --- Anyone else catch the captions saying "stomach oppression" around 19:01 ? I was born after the Soviet collapse and our country faced starvation and poverty. I grew up being very hungry. Some days we didn’t eat and I remember being shaky and sweaty from not eating for days. Leave my buddy Choji alone! He was a great representation of fat kids in real life- bc some people made fun of him, but over all his friends saw past that and helped him grow. His whole ark was "a crybaby that found power in his abilities and vulnerability" and the fight when he is first shown with his wings was great, I tear up just thinking about it.
