  • Franz Beckenbauer shows his unparalleled class in a friendly encounter with Denis Law's & Kenny Dalglish's Scotland in preparations for the 1974 World Cup. In a masterful performance Der Kaiser highlights the very essencee of the role of libero - sweeping everything in behind, dictating the play from deeper areas and making unexpected incisive runs forward to confuse the opposing defence.

Great video of the great player, he had everything, read the game so well, acceleration, ease of pass, not afraid to tackle, next to no foul play, great shooting when he had the chance, great leader plus that drop of the shoulder when he was in trouble. Bobby Moore was great, Beckenbauer was better.

Tavy@ why is international football SO boring? You can tell beckenbauer was born to play football, but he isnt the most exiting player to watch. But the germans in general are boring to watch. But some how they always get there. At world cups over the last 48 years i think i only watched germany when they got to the final becouse i had no option. And i have watched them win 3 world cups so what else can a say? they are boringly brilliant lol well ye need to be brilliant to win the world cup. In 1990 i thought they were the best german team i have ever seen. They just ran over every one that year. And i knew they would beat maradonas argentina, and they nearly and maybe should have beat them in the 1986 world cup final. But at the 1990 world cup the germans just looked alot stronger, faster and better from 1986. I put a fiver on them to win it that year and got ten pounds back lol thats how highly rated they were to win that final. People told me to put all my money on them becouse there too good for argentina this year? And people said dont be daft any great team can lose a final, just put a fiver or twenty pound on them, max. Becouse i cant see them losing lol the odds were 2 to 1 for germany and 3 to 1 argentina i think, or 4 to 1 argentina. But the germans were clear favourites. I thought they were even better than the brazil 1970 team. I bett the german 1990 side would have beat them. And maybe 2-1 or it could be 5-0. Becouse there were better and harder teams in the 1990 cup compared to the 1970 cup

I'm really not sure how you can say that 1972 West Germany was boring, for example (or Beckenbauer not being the most exciting player to watch). Beckenbauer, Netzer, Overath, Littbarski, Breitner, Seeler, Rummenigge, Schuster, Walter, Brehme - German football always had tons of extremely entertaining players.
