Franz Beckenbauer, often affectionately referred to as "Der Kaiser," has sadly passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of football enthusiasts around the globe. Renowned for his elegant playing style and tactical acumen, he played a pivotal role in shaping the success of FC Bayern München and the German national team. As a player, Beckenbauer won numerous accolades, including the FIFA World Cup both as a player in 1974 and as a manager in 1990. Beckenbauer invented the modern role of central defender. He was a legendary defender, had a brilliant vision of the game, master tactician and passer, and deadly in end to end attacks. He was in absolute control of his game and his team at all time, a leader and coach on the field. He played much of the game of the century on a sling because of a dislocated shoulder, full 120 minutes of a breathtaking back and fourth world cup semifinal, played a breakneck speed under searing heat against Italy at Azteca stadium in 1970. This is legendary stuff. Rest in peace, Kaiser.

I was born in 1981...grew up in Berlin, Germany to an American soldier and a Gernan-Irish mother.
I started following football around 1988 watching FC Bayern München while playing myself for Normania 08 Berlin and 1FC Lübars later on.
But my love and passion for the sport was initiated watching Franz Beckenbauer coaching the Team that would Win the 1990 World Cup.
Lothar Matthäus was and is my personal favorite payer of all time.
Beckenbauer was a beloved, respected authority...part of FC Bayern München as President and Coach. I remember buying a VHS tape with a documentary of Franz Beckenbauer....and then I realized WHAT for a incredible Libero he was. He was far ahead the rest of "Sweepers" and revolutionized the position....center back - defensive 6 (interceptor that would read and stopped counterattacks) - offensive 8 (with passing abilities of a a Bruyne, Pirlo or Özil)...his tactical intelligence was phenomenal. He knew exactly where he was needed....where to pass. And his beautiful, elegant free kicks can't be imitated.
As a player, coach or President....no matter what he did....it was successful.
I usually only care for friends and family concerning death....but Beckenbauer was part of my life as Fan from FC Bayern München and the German national team...
Maybe the most important football player Germany ever had...and definitely the most successful. He leaves a big hole...and those social justice warriors attacking him for one dumb comment are a disgrace....and those claiming he was corrupted by cash flowing at the 2006 World Cup....there is zero empirical testable verifiable material evidence....and that's that!

Since you are speaking in the past... Not "Maybe the most important football player Germany ever had...". You have to say: Maybe the most important football player the world ever had...". World champion as a player. World champion as a coach. The double world champion who brought the 2004 World Cup to Germany. There has never been a footballer in the past who has achieved what he has achieved. I am not a fan of FC Bayern. But you have to recognise that without envy: He has made a significant contribution to what FC Bayern is today: the only club in Germany that can compete internationally with clubs like Paris St Germain, Manchester United, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Arsenal, etc. And that without financial support from the Orient or Russia. The man is a legend not just for Germany - for the whole world.

At the European Championships in 2008 in Switzerland in a Bar that broadcasted the aftergame interviews, I was invited with my friend to the VIP section. The Kaiser came in and shook our hands, INTRODUCING himself. He would have never needed to do that, but that's the humble person he was outside the limelights. I will never forget that special moment.

Vielleicht seine Generation,aber für mich war er nur im richtigen moment auf dem richtigen platz um zu einem Verein (Bayern) zu gehn wo andre aus ärmeren regionen nicht hinzu gehn konnten.

Damals musste man zu 1860 gehen, um Karriere zu machen. Außerdem kam Beckenbauer aus Giesing, einem Arbeiterviertel in München. Daher verstehe ich deinen Unsinn noch viel weniger. Einfach mal kurz nachdenken, bevor man hier so einen Schwachsinn verzapft.

Great memories of 1990 with dearly departed father and brother, was aware he was the coach of that great team but did not know what an icon and inspiration he was. Vague memories of the 1986 final and believe the Maradona team got away with one. Also did not know he helped Hamburg win the league, and how Bayern was nothing in the early days, 1860 were the team.

When I was playing youth football I wasnt doing very well in midfield, so i got moved into central defence and I started stepping up with the ball and passing it rather than kicking it into the channels whenever I won a tackle or interception. My dad, who had watched Beckenbauer in the 60s and 70s as a young man, immediately started telling me that I was playing like Beckenbauer, with admiration in his voice and a smile on his face. That smile told me "This is how the game is supposed to be played".

These guys we can see were among the best soccer players in the world. My father and I watched the matches together, it was unforgettable.

I only saw him coach at the 1990 world cup and later Bayern at the 1996 season where they won the UEFA Cup. He is a true football genius. How many players can bring a 2nd division team to 3 European cups in a row in a decade. He did that with Bayern.

Beckenbauer war jemand der mein ganzes Leben präsent war. Konnte mir nicht vorstellen, dass es mal eine Zeit geben würde wo er nicht mehr da ist. 78 Jahre war zwar kein schlechtes Alter, aber trotzdem eines wo ich dachte er könnte sich noch erholen. Leider geschah das nicht. Ruhe in Frieden Franz. Du wirst sehr vermisst werden.

He will be so dearly missed!! His personality is and was always outstanding in Germany football history. I’ve periodically been such an anti Bayern fan, but every thing about „the Kaiser“ was without exception appreciated and beloved. I wish we would have many more moments with him. 😢❤

As a 90s kid, the footballers of the past we knew of were Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Di Stefano, Platini, Best. They were mythical.
