Old Sker House - Its History And What WAS It Like Inside? (Before The Renovation)

  • Sker House near Porthcawl, we look at its history and show some pictures taken inside the house before the restoration when it was still a ghostly grey ruin.
Although Sker House is one of the important historical buildings of South Wales just keep in mind that the house is privately owned and occupied so respect their privacy.
The pictures were taken in 1986 when Sker House was still derelict, it really looked like a classic haunted house. The house has since been restored and was sold back in 2003. The house was open to the public for 28 days a year for the first 10 years but now there’s no longer any public access.
Sker House was originally founded by the monks of Neath Abbey as one of five farms or 'granges' to support the Abbey. During the 16th century, the house was extensively remodelled although it still followed most of the original floor plan.
Due to the remote location on Sker Point, it is easy to see why it is the location for a number of ghost stories, the most famous being the story of the ‘Maid Of Sker’ made famous in the novel by R. D. Blackmore.
Recently, a local video game developer released a ‘Maid Of Sker’ horror game loosely based on the story.

Thanks for the video. Went there a few times, once with a bunch of my friends in the middle of the night, this was in the 80's. It was creepy enough walking across the fields in the pitch black, then my friend said he could hear something. I laughed as I knew he was freaked in the dark. Out of the darkness a bunch of cows appeared and started running after us. Was chaos, people screaming and I will always remember my friend perfectly diving over the barbed wire fence with a cow right behind him. We went into the house and checked out all the rooms. Many of the floorboards were missing upstairs and there were birds and feathers everwhere. There was even a fox skeleton in one of the rooms upstairs. Freaked the girls out when I pointed out that what they were standing on, ha. Only one of us had a torch but we stayed there for a couple of hours but nothing eventful happened, apart from those cows..lol.

I went in there several times in the 70s as a boy, exploring and playing and there was someone living in 1 small room. There was still furniture and some paintings on the walls. Creepy place. Some of the architectural features inside, doorways, some windows and lintels are obviously older than the present structure and have been incorporated in from the original grange I expect.

Hard to imagine a family still living there in the sixties.
As I can best recall, it was just one or two rooms on the ground floor. Think I went inside on a visit but would have been quite small.

@@flydriveexplore Iris and Rhys Evans used to farm Sker and were still living there until about 1975 I'm fairly sure, when they retired to Kenfig, as I worked for them in 1966-7 but visited after I'd moved to Canada when I came back to see my mother who had sadly died just before I got there, as my parents had moved into my grandmother's house called Waun-Y-Mer opposite to what was the Maid of Sker pub in the late 'sixties.....Sir Gareth Edwards acquired Waun-Y-Mer eventually, that is now double the size as so much has changed along West Rd, whereas the Rest, Pink Bay, Sker, Parc Newydd, Moor Lane and old Nottage are still virtually unchanged quite as they were, happily when Auntie Mabel apportioned out the Worthington bitter ~ your video walks are just excellent and much appreciated, so many thanks
