Stormy Down quarry was my dads place of work for many years. He was a local lorry driver, and, as my older sister was in a Jazz Band ( remember those ), mum took her and I went to work with dad. That would have been in the mid to late 70’s and I especially remember those quarries well. Over the old railway bridge by the Esso petrol station, and it was on the right hand side. I haven’t been there for decades but I remember well before the Cornelly by-pass and the old road into Porthcawl.

I remember the Jazz Bands, they used to have a regular competition here in Porthcawl.

My grandad Norman and his family owned Grove Quarry. R Rees and sons. It was then sold on to Mix Concrete, in the early 1970s. Just as matter of interest. 😊

@Bryn Williams my Grandad Norman would be very pleased to hear that. Did you do that with my Mum’s cousin, Graham? As I know he did that as well.

I've recently been watching your videos as I enjoy a good walk in the countryside, I'm from Bettws Bridgend but moved down south Cornelly 5 years ago and I love exploring around the area, I thought I done all the walks around Cornelly area but since watching your videos I realised I haven't walked half of the walks yet. Thanks for the videos. Ps I've noticed they cut back the tree by the public foot path by the Grove golf club so you can now see it, they must of watched your video 😂

  • @holeinonegolfpodcast2262

Great videos of Porthcawl and local area! I used to live in South Cornelly, I remember when they built the bypass. The old Smokey Cott bridge was terrible and you're right that it stayed there for a long time after! I wondered what that walk was like, I didn't know about the roman road or the J37 history...we went to the 3 horse shoes pub all of the time it was a great pub :)

Brought back some memories there Marcus, a load of us used to walk that route as 13 years old somethings, it's more exciting on a crisp cold night due to the lack of light pollution, walking, talking and enjoying the stars was something to behold as a young teenager. Another great production as ever. Have you thought of filming Pyle woods? Lots of history down that way, The farm house, waterfall, and the fresh water spring. Spent many wonderful years playing there as a kid growing up in the late 70's and early 80's.

According to Richard Morgan (former Archivist at Glamorgan Archives ) in “Place Names of Glamorgan” the name Cornelly may well derive from Old English “corn Leah” meaning clearing frequented by cranes. The article is well worth a read.

What you got to remember is, the normans couldnt speak original british, y cymru. so often they just cobled together an english sounding word, that made sense to them. for example Henffordd, when it was still part of wales, is now hereford. or old road correctly translated. at the time, most of the anglo saxons and normans were illiterate, whilst wales had been trading with egypt back before the 4 centuary bc, as depicted in hugh edwards excellent biography of brition. Other little rehashings are CWM or valley.. pen y cwm.. head of the valley. valley your head (hair), which became combe (cwm) your hair. many other rehashings on the towns as well, abertyleri became abertillery... cynffig became kenfig. why because the normans and anglo saxons could only spell using phenonics. gruffydd became griffiths etc. so cornelly may have been a norman of the original name... cornelly souds like llanelli, holly ground of ellis, when translated in to english. so weve got the land belong to St Elli so far, so what about the corn... which in welsh becomes horn or trumpet. would then make sense gornelli, which would then retranslate into english as, the trumpet of st elli. taken one step further, a trumpet call is a rallying point. which would fit in, with the old fort, burried under the sand dunes. which was discovered on time team, about 15ish years ago.
another great example of the invading tribes, stealing welsh tech, is the sissneg bwr, english long bow. it was based on the original welsh long bow, which was put to great use,, by welshbowmen, at the battle of agincore in france. such was the excellence of the welshbowmen of sulures, gwent south wales. it took the romans 54 years to establish camp at caerleon, whilst england fell in a matter of weeks, however. iy must be stressed it was not called ingsland at the time. as the german anglo saxon tribes was yet to invade and rebrand mercia under its catchy new title ingsland, meaning fertile setlement. of course the land would be fertile, because the native peace loving celtic farmers had already done all the deforestation and cultivation.
