  • The Black Mountain Quarries - Another hidden gem in Wales.
I take a road trip to the rugged Black Mountain area of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. The Brecon Beacons National Park is famous for its walks, wildlife and tranquillity but massive changes took place during the Industrial Revolution.
Within this picturesque landscape in Carmarthenshire on the western side of the Brecon Beacons, you can find the industrial remains of the limestone industry.
The path takes you around the Black Mountain Quarries also known as Herbert’s Quarry. You can see the imposing rock faces, lime kilns, quarries and spoil tips, the remains of the lime works which date back over 200 years.
The quarries were only accessed by expensive toll roads and this area became the centre for the Rebecca Riots between 1839 and 1843. During the protests, men in disguise attacked and burnt the tollgates during the night.
Herbert’s Quarry is part of the Mynydd Du SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and the Black Mountain and Mynydd Myddfai Registered Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest in Wales.
As well as the industrial heritage walk there are many other Brecon Beacons walks you can take from this area.
The quarries can be found off the A4069 between Brynaman and Llangadog, there are two free car parks.
The audio tour of the Black Mountain Quarries can be found here dyfedarchaeolo...

We are off to Wales tomorrow from southern,England, and, because of you video, we will be going to see Herbert’s Quarry on our way up to Dolgamedd in Snowdonia

Looks like you are going to have a great week for weather - sunny and dry (Although Snowdonia can do anything at anytime)

@@flydriveexplore Hi, I’ve just seen your reply. Yes we had great weather, a bit chilly in the evening camping but beautiful clear views on our journey. On the way up we stopped at Herbert’s Quarry for a short time and we’re going to explore a bit more on the way home. However, as you said, the weather can change, and it did! You couldn’t see anything when we went there again on the way home. 5mph driving through the clouds…Definitely worth a longer visit next time.

Fascinating History of this area which I had no idea of and we drove past the site on the way to Llangadog without even realising it existed. I think we were distracted by the stunning scenery. 😃
    Thanks for posting 👍👍👍😃

Enjoyed this tranquil walk with you. Sounds like a very dangerous industry. Haha Las Vegas is one of our family's favorites too. My kids are currently begging for a Vegas trip.

It's very tranquil but in the winter it must have been a hard place to work. Hopefully, we will be able to fly to the US and Vegas at some point in the not too distant future.

What a fascinating yet forlorn place. I will certainly be making a visit to this wonderful area - I am amazed at just how deliciously devoid of people it is - which suits me down to the ground. As far as I am concerned, Hell is other people.

    • @flydriveexplore

It was quiet but it was a weekday. Not sure how busy it gets at the weekend but if you go early it should be quiet and there's plenty of countryside to get away from anybody.

    Was that area ever forested?

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  Před 3 lety +2

It may have been but it would have been a very long time ago. During the bronze age and into the iron age much of the area was cleared for grazing.
