- Accompanied by Dr. Robert Huizenga, Charlie Sheen continues his exclusive interview with TODAY’s Matt Lauer. “Charlie has contracted the HIV virus,” Huizenga confirms, but adds that he is more concerned about the actor’s depression and substance abuse history. “Charlie does not have AIDS,” the doctor says. He also says that the odds of Sheen having spread the virus are low. Sheen says he takes four pills a day, and while he maintains is not taking mood-altering drugs, he does admit he’s still drinking.

Why is the interviewer telling him what to do with his life? Nobody asked him. I found this part of the interview degrading to Charlie.
+buck78 I was just thinking the same thing ! Especially at the end when he suggested Charlie not drink. Um newsflash, complete abstinence from any alcohol actually increases Charlie's risk of binging but apparently Matt's a doctor and he can just make this call. It sounds like he's doing a really good job in his recovery and he looks fantastic.

Anyone with HIV knows that spiraling into a deep depression is not unusual and if you get caught into a cycle of substance abuse to escape and numb the painful truth, you might not be so present to take your medications. Do you honestly think that there aren't HIV + people out there who don't fall into such states of depression, feeling like abysmal failures that all they want to do is self medicate and die? Ask the gay boys who have been positive for years and still partying and smoking Tina and re-exposing themselves. The fear of HIV encourages many things, the least of which for some is the adherence to daily medication.

Even though he's a well known and accomplished actor, he is still human..And today he's owned up to the fact that he's lived a life of excess and carelessness which has lead to this ultimate result. I think he sincerely respects his condition and with this admittance can possibly become a positive force in the education, awareness and research of the virus. Maybe he and Magic Johnson can start a new show..A talk show perhaps that has other celebrities with rare, unusual or even deadly diseases and deformities big or small come and speak out or liberate themselves. As well as regular individuals. All in all, I wish Charlie the best and that he continues to remain as healthy as possible and give us many more memorable characters and performances in his acting career.

Well done Charlie -that must have been an incredibly hard interview.
