Is Bahia de Caraquez the new, improved Salinas? | ECUADOR

- Bahia de Caraquez is a beautiful town on a peninsula that is becoming more popular with foreigners for good reason.
Just north of Manta it's actually an estuary that has a river beach on one side and an ocean on the other. All the photos I'd seen make it look like a city similar to Salinas so I was surprised to see it was more like a lovely town.
We stayed 3 nights in Coco Bongo, which we loved, and I'd recommend. Bahia really grew on us. There isn't a lot of things "to do" in town but it's a great beach town if you just want to relax.

Hi I'm Ayngelina and my full time job is my site BaconisMagic.ca it's all about the best food around the world and how to make it at home.
In 2010 I left a job in advertising, 5 year relationship and sold all my possessions to travel the world. In the last ten years I've had some crazy experiences and even owned a restaurant in Toronto at one time. And prior to 2020 I had been based in Cuba.
When the world shut down I returned to Canada and decided to teach myself video. I wanted to share more than just words and photos but to show people the adventures I have learning about food around the world.
I'm not married. I have no kids. But I do have a lot of local friends who help me discover the best local tips.

Bahia de Caraquez was a very developed city by the 90's. It was the favorite beach city for the wealthy people of Quito.
Unfortunately it was hit by a two major earthquakes in 1998 and in 2016.
I hope one day Bahia become the city that used to be.
The food is great, as well as the touristic sites.
Yes. At one point it was the place to be!! Not only wealthy we are not wealthy it was pretty affordable and beautiful
What's your perspective on how it looks compared to what it was in the 90s. Some areas definitely need repair but I think the waterfront is coming along well.
I think it's still probably a value purchase right now as it doesn't seem to be on a lot of people's radar but there were some great looking properties and condos for sale there.
Awesome video of Bahia! You brought me back to my childhood right before there was a bridge connecting Bahia and San Vicente. The warmth of the manabitas makes a visitor feel really welcomed! Great tips on where to eat and stay as well. Thanks for making such fabulous videos of Ecuador....
The highest compliment is when Ecuadorians like my videos. Thank you!
I love your authenticity and how you explain all the main basics of food, places to visit, the culture and history. It is a well balanced description of what a traveller/ visitor needs to know in a very friendly and laid back way. I'm learning so much in your videos and can't wait to visit and explore all these beautiful places with my husband when we come back to Ecuador! Muchísimas gracias!! 🧡😊🌼
Wow thank you so much for commenting, it really means a lot to hear this. For me the food really reflects the diversity of Ecuador, something I think most people miss because it's such a small country that there are nuances that may not be easy to see at first.
Land of my ancestors. As always, modestly charming. Good to see it through your lens. 👍🏻
Thank you kindly. This was a fantastic city. I really enjoyed my time here.
Loved your video of Bahia de Caraquez. The videography was superb. The city is blessed with gorgeous scenery. Although, it was hit by a terrible earthquake in 2016, it looks like the rebuilding process is well on its way. It is definitely worth investigating, if one is thinking to retire in a community with a ocean view. .
Thank you! This is the second last 100% camera video as it breaks midway through the Manta video next Saturday. It wasn't horrible, but you can bet I'm buying the new iphone when I get back to Canada with a RODE directional mic so I have a better back up.
I have been fortunate enough to visit Ecuador. I was very impressed. My work has taken me to many "developing" nations and one of the tragedies of a nation developing is excessive trash, litter and debris left everywhere. Ecuadorians take great pride in their country, and you see less litter there then you now do in the US (especially in Liberal PNW cities, where the litter is horrific). Anyway, visit Ecuador, I'm excited to return as soon as I can. Enjoy the video, what a great-looking spot in the World.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
The city looked nice as I rode thru on my way up the coast. I couldn’t stay in every city, and maybe I should have stayed here. Always good to have something and someplace to look forward to on the next trip!
Cheers from BC!
I feel the same way, there is never enough time.
Front seat on the premiere 🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻
I was driving to Paute during the premiere and didn't have a signal 😭
I love everything in this beautiful City.
It’s a great spot!
Great video. Looks like a great place to check out.
I think you guys would really enjoy it.
Beautiful place, I was able to visit it prior to 2016 earthquake. Love all your videos keep them coming, you guys have a bless day😃!!!!!
How different does it look now?
I love the allacas from Ecuador and the Ayacas from Venezuela. I lived in both countries. Bahia looks so beautiful that I want to move there. The food is outstanding. I remember that every afternoon a boy came out with a basket of bread on his head or shoulders. The bread was so good.
That early evening light with the kids out playing in the water really sold me.

She is so lucky, what a beautiful place.
Love your videos... love Ecuador too ❤
Thank you so much, it's such a beautiful country.
I made it to the premiere. I'm a subscriber and gave the video a like. The default for the subtitles was German, and we thank you for offering multiple subtitle language options including Latin American Spanish.
I wonder why it defaults to German as the subtitle for you.
@@ayngelina I'm not sure, and it's far from a concern or gripe. If anything it's a good reminder that the option is available in languages well beyond English and Spanish.
Hola! Out for a walk at kickoff but gotcha now. Thanks for all y'all do.
I missed the premiere, were shooting a video in Paute and I was in a dead cell zone.
the video you made is very good, I really like it.. the natural scenery is very beautiful.. success always for you ❤️❤️😍😍👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much!
MUY BUEN VÍDEO.. EXPLICAS MUY BIEN LO QUE VISITAS.. FELICITACIONES!
Gracias Jordan!
As always so happy to watch and enjoy another one of your videos. I was there once. It was in my last year of high school from Macas back in 1993 I believe. Beautiful !!! we had so much fun. It was my first time at any beach ever! so many memories, sadly I forgot my camera with many pictures already taken, was not aware of the high tide!!Did not have the money to get me another one! 😔 But hey it happened and not only me but other friends as well. Lovely video thank you so much for bringing back the good and the bad memories 😆
That's such a happy yet tragic story! But at least you have good memories.
Eres genial y muy simpática, hermosos videos.
Gracias, muy gentil 😊
Beautiful place to visit!
It really is!
My gf lives in EC 8 to 9 months out of the year, comes up here to the US over our holiday season. She visited Bahia a couple years ago, really liked it, was thinking about moving there. She loves beaches, is a real sun bunny! I'm glad things are being rebuilt there. I hope that continues, and that Bahia can be made into an even better Salinas than Salinas is! I get hungry just watching your videos, lol!
Oh thank you so much Larry! Bahia is pretty great. It's definitely a quieter life but so beautiful.
I know rental prices in Bahia will be rising, would it be worthwhile to check apt rentals in San Vicente, instead of Bahia proper? She likes living in the EC culture, speaks pretty good Spanish. And that beautiful Bahia beach being only a short bus ride across the bridge, is an apt in San Vicente that bad an idea? Thanks for your input!
I'd check it out. Different vibe for sure but maybe you'd prefer it?
@@ayngelina A quieter life is right up her alley, she has no need or desire for night life, that sort of thing. All she would want to do it go to the beach for a couple hours, soak up the sun and hopefully swim a bit depending on waves at the time. Then go to some local market and buy fresh food to cook up later, that is her dream life!
Las hayacas de Plazita, worldclass!
Indeed!
l enjoy very much watching your videos, it also makes me very hungry 😋😊
Thank you so much, glad you like them!
A friend and I spent 2 1/2 weeks in Bahia. Our Canadian hosts were very deceptive as to what there was to do and said the pool would be up and running by the time we arrived. Wrong. This was 2018 and Bahia was still devastated. Our saving grace was Henry, who owned Henry's Sports Cafe. An expat from California who took 2 wayward, depressed women and did his best to make us happy. We met some expats at Coco Bongo who were lovely people. They and Henry were very upset that we were not only misled but grossly overcharged for our accommodations. But, I can see the potential of Bahia and would probably go back..........with better accommodations and hosts.
Oh that's a shame to hear, the coast was devastated ad I'm sure the hosts were desperate to get any income in but misrepresenting the situation doesn't help. I really enjoyed my time there and would definitely return.
Great video wao bolon de longaniza never have pan de yuca is good the pan de yuca is big lol love pan de yuca
That pan de yuca was the biggest I've seen but also the best one too!
@@ayngelina i love pan de yuca
Thank you for promoting our city Ayngelina. There are very nice attractions around Bahia. In San Vicente there is a great Restaurant School that goes by the name "ICHE", in the middle of the Bay there is Heart Island with a great colony of marine frigate birds and mangroves, close to Calceta there are the oldest organic Cacao plantations and one of the most expensive chocolates of the world are made from this tropical fruit. Also close to Chone (about an hour away) there are 2 sites with petroglyphs (rock carvings) that are very interesting, also Cerro Seco Reserve, Canoa Surf Town, and to the north so much more.
Someone else suggested Iche to me, is that connected with Iche restaurant in Manta? Thank you for all of these suggestion, I'll check them out on my next visit to Bahia.
Hola Patricio. Can you be more specific to the location of the petroglyphs? Thanks.
@@michaelbramble6433 Hola Michael, there are 2 important sites which are to the interior of Chone, one is La Dibujada and the other la Cueva de la Capilla.
@@patriciotamariz4708 Gracias! Have a great day and thanks for the information.
It's so great that you shared your views of this city/town. I just wish it wasn't in such an earthquake hotspot. This poor community has taken multiple hits. I wish them well.
The whole country is on the ring of fire so no one is really safe. It is good to see they've been able to rebound, places like Pedernales still have not.
My family had a house there...many moons ago...
May I ask if you have 2 or 3 nights to spend at a.place would you choose Mindo or Papayallacta? Where did U stay in Mindo?
Mindo and stay where I stayed Casa Piedra it's so beautiful. You can do Papallacta in one night
Thank you!!
😍😍😍😍😍
Hi bud
Nice place but need some

Thst soup with mani yummmmm
Did they use saffron or curcuma?
No the colour was all from the mani
Is the Strawberry flavored Soda you presented available in a Sugar Free version?
Lol no. This is a traditional drink with real sugar instead of corn syrup.
So happy to see you are both enjoying and, I am sure this will become as good as it was, or even better 😊
Ecuador is a million times better at "building back better" than all sad Klaus Schwabb's in the world 😊😊
I really didn't think I'd like Bahia at all. I was not looking forward to visiting but I LOVED it. Any time there's a family atmosphere I really enjoy a place - even if I don't want my own family 🤣
@@ayngelina sounds more than familiar dear Ayngelina..
Take care .. Ecuador sounds - and looks/feels like THE country....a country and not least it's people..to call HOME 🥰
So, did you ask Andrés to stir the El Faro drink to mix the visual layers for the viewers at home? What were the names of the layers again?
haha he mixed that for me, it was pretty but I didn't want a shot of pure alcohol in a sip
The place is right smack in the quake zone of Ecuador.
Ecuador is on the ring of fire so no place is earthquake free but yes in the last major earthquake it had damage that they are still repairing
@@ayngelina But there are patterns AKA fault lines. Just don't be on the fault lines. There are places in Ecuador that never gets shocked and there are places like Bahia that will always get shocked.
I like
Awesome thank you
Bahia es so hard
Duro? Cómo?
Another Vlogger did a tour of this town several month's ago now & stated with So Many buildings still in disrepair they wouldn't even consider living or recommend anyone else to live there, Do you agree or disagree??
I think I know the video you are speaking of where someone drove through and made observations without talking to people like we did. A lot of the buildings were being repaired as I mentioned but still needed paint jobs, which is what I think they saw and just assumed no one was doing anything. But some will be torn down.
I think I also gave a bit of context perhaps they didn't have. A lot of wealthy Ecuadorians own holiday homes here, it's not a poor area. Developers are tearing down buildings whether they are unsafe or not because they are rebuilding luxury condos so I think this area is getting more and more expensive as it's still quite quaint.
But if you have questions about specific buildings there is an active community of expats here on Facebook.
@@ayngelina Thanks, I messaged "Bildev Tours" & they actually recommended This city as an option to Manta.
Hello to both of u..keep enjoing in my name
Another terrific video! SUBSCRIBE!!!

Soy canadiense (irlandesa/italiana) y no latina.

Salinas will not see in a while. So disappointed. Overpriced, traffic, beginning insecure and simple over promoted. There are far better coastal places
I think why it's so important to come here and travel the coast, there are so many beautiful plaes.
