The people that say the video is boring are just looking at the lighting and darkness of the video. The darkness just compliments the message of the song. If people listen to the harmonies, there is no way this song can be called boring. The atmosphere and harmonies blend into one perfect creation. I LOVE IT!

Pentatonix always puts so much work into fitting their videos to the theme of the song. I was never disappointed by it. The black and white shallow scene is perfect, the Prayer snow-white forest is great, the Sound of Silence warehouse is perfect, the Daft Punk futuristic-electronic-avatar look fits it perfectly. There are so many examples, how much work is in each and every song they do, and it speaks to their commitment.

I absolutely love this cover, their voices and face expressions make me cry😭. And when they all sing MAD WOOORLD, it's really breathtaking.
And I like the camera work at the end (6:38). When Kirstin was singing her lead, she raised eyebrows, then the scene switched to Kevin who also raised eyebrows, after Kevin frowned, the scene switched to Scott, and when Scott closed his eyes, the scene switched to Mitch who currently has his eyes closed, and Mitch opened his mouth, scene switched back to Kevin who has his mouth opened, when Kevin closed his mouth, scene switched to Scott who was closing his mouth and he looked to the right, the scene back to Kirstin again. It's seems very smooth, one to anothe, like they're connected. (I hope what I wrote make sense, my grammar probably was a mess)

Their attention to details in every little thing is probably unrivaled. They pay attention to every little note, beat, and even silence in their arranging. Their videos are the same. Not sure who is the video master is, whether it is them or someone they hired they are really good at what they do.

It's so incredible, I don't get why people think it's boring. It uses everyone to such a high degree like. I feel like everyone was showcased. Mitch and Kirstie are ETHEREAL! Scott is beautiful and a rock as always. And god, Matt was so standout here? I'm in love with him. Then like, last but not least... KEVIN. His baby angel voice was so clear and beautiful here!!!

A true 5 point harmony cover! No beatboxing in this one and it sounds incredible! Very haunting 😮 and you get that unique Pentatonix wall of sound that is so beautiful and powerful! My favorite wall of sound is the one in Imagine where they literally sound like one voice which was the message of the cover!

For all of with Anxiety, we can Identify with this song. The 'shadow selves' walking behind them starts out going forward and they reverse and start going backwards. This is superbly shot and their emotion in their faces and voices just show how we feel when we are in an anxiety attack. 10 seconds in when Matt hits us with his first low note I got chills, and when Mitch said 'See right through me', I choke on a sob. I have seen this video over 15 times now and it still affects me.

I'm with you with the watching it over and over. I'm obsessed with it and have been watching different reaction channels and everyone is blown away. I woke up the past 3 days with this song in my head. I don't even know how many times I've listened to Mad World at this point. Probably at least 50 and it's so good that I'm not even close to sick of it!
Great reaction! It's so cool to hear different combinations of these guys sing with each other. Am I crazy? Because I could've sworn that I heard Kirsten/Matt and Kirsten/Kevin harmonizing in this piece at different points, as well. Really unbelievable!!

When I try to explain what PTX music does to me...I feel like I have a low voltage electric current running through my entire body. Chills chasing up and down my spine and goosebumps erupting all over, even on my legs. And the tears of emotion that form from the absolute perfection of their tight harmonies.

I think this song is much more important than "am I feeling its vibe." September is National Suicide Prevention month. I lost an uncle to suicide when I was younger. He was paranoid schizophrenic, and a lot about this video calls to mind the realities of that mental health condition and what it does to people who suffer from it. The shadowy figures with indistinct faces, the ideation around "the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I ever had..." I hope, if nothing else, that this beautiful, haunting, and powerful performance from Pentatonix helps people understand and feel more compassion for people who struggle with mental health issues that drag them into suicidal ideation.
i’m sorry for your loss :( i definitely understand exactly what you mean. after watching/listening a few times i really started to see the connection between mental illness and the video. the line “the dreams in which i’m dying are the best i’ve ever had” also stuck out to me because i’ve been dealing with depression for about four years now and can definitely relate. the video is haunting and gives some insight into the mind of someone who struggles with mental health. 🤍
In the movie, Donnie Darko, for which Mad World was the theme song, the lead character and protagonist has mental health issues and actor Jake Gyllenhaal does a great job in portraying that.

I don’t understand how people think it’s boring or too similar to other covers. The first thing that struck me was how different this arrangement was to their usual style. A lot of the time it’s built up around a soloist and background vocals. This one is largely built around two of them harmonizing and then it switches pairings which changes the dynamics and the sound throughout the song bringing out very different qualities. They do obviously harmonize in other songs but this one revolves around them in a different way. I thought it was really cool how differently they’d built this up.

Why???? They've grown so much! Their previous music is iconic but can we appreciate how more intense and deep they are becoming now? They're harmonies are so much more intricate and complex and what they get in return is just too much judging!
Like...they've been together for more than 9 years obviously people are going to grow up! It's okay....I just...I just wish they were appreciated more...they work so much and are still criminally underrated...how this video didn't go viral is beyond me🙂

For myself, I think Tears for Fears (the original artist of this song) was one of the best groups of the last 40 years. Their sense of melody was impeccable. If you’re curious, you should check out their songs “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, “Head Over Heels” and “Secret World”. I really enjoyed your deep reaction! And yes, I’m vibing with this version; Pentatonix did a beautiful job!

Great reaction, and I'm with you all the way. The intensity is palpable throughout. As with "Imagine" they've made a song from the '80's relevant to today's "Mad World". This song sounds amazing, and the video is just outstanding. I am going to be so mad if they aren't at least nominated for a grammy for their At Home album. people without a soul, just kidding, I read that people who didn't like this (mostly on twitter) was because they found it repetitive to their other covers, which i desagree, i think that every cover or orignal song of them is very unic.

But I literally just came back to say that this cover is a perfect amalgamation of every great PTX cover: Kevin getting to sing, Matt singing in his higher register, Matt getting great bass moments, SCOTT getting great bass moments, Scott belting, Kirsten belting, Kirsty’s lower register, MITCH’S lower register, WALL OF SOUND, 5 part unison moment, duet moments, and now we can add Matt and Mitch harmonization. Seriously, what more could we ask for 😂.

I think this Matt-Mitch duet is different because IIRC, when Avi and Mitch did it, it's usually Avi's low notes and Mitch's high notes. Here, Matt's singing in his higher register and Mitch in his lower. The result is quite interesting, at least for me.

I checked "Top Ten Pentatonix Songs Without Beatboxing" and most of them have homophonic arrangement. The exceptions are the section in "Run to You" where Kirstie and Kevin did their own thing and "when the party's over" where I think Kevin is harmonizing with Matt most of the time (?).

I have to listen again but I think they jumped to the relative minor key. Its one of the few key changes you can do in one chord. Who ever said they weren.t into this one have to have ear test. This isn't the best thing they have ever done. It is a strong number two for me. I think Kirsten's verse was so refreshing how she played with the melodic line to give it more emotion. I really love this song, I've played it on a ton of different instruments, Mandolin, Cello, Violin, Bass, Baritone, Flute even a mountain dulcimer.

@mitchscupcake it’s a weird movie. Hard to understand and confusing. Especially if you don’t pay attention to the little shots of pages from a book referenced in it. And the protagonist’s quirky behavior derived from his mental health issues, the occasional sexual preoccupation, and the weird visions of the protagonists “familiar” (dude in the rabbit costume) combine to give it a rather creepy vibe.

This was literally the best 14 minutes and 49 seconds of my morning, so thank you for that. And I'd have to say that I agree with you. I've seen more people than I'd like to admit say that the arrangement wasn't anything new and that it was kind of boring, which I actually really disagree with. After listening to it on repeat for hours on end, I found that it was the little things that made this one different. People talked about how they didn't like Scott singing the entire first verse, but I feel like if he didn't, I wouldn't get as emotional as I do when I hear the Mitch and Matt harmony or Kirstie's verse at the end, or how Kevin's high notes float around like clouds in the sky. And I feel like that plus the visual aspect and just everything being there in front of us at the same time and being encapsulated, in a way, by this heavenly everything makes this one of their best covers in my opinion.

My first listen of this, I found it good but didn’t quite connect with it. I’ll chalk that up to my familiarity with the cover used for the Donnie Darko movie and that I listened but wasn’t watching the video. But after subsequent listens in which I could also watch, my perception shifted greatly. Seeing the video with the obvious emotion on their faces as well as the clear callback to the movie in the background did something and their change ups to make this their own song began to develop its own life and made greater sense

Came back to say I know what vibes this gives me. Like an immortal walking the Earth for millennia, dreaming of death. The ghost shadows in the back are just the people that come and go in a blink of an eye to them. They see a Mad World, full of violence and death. Would be great to slow it down more, maybe everyone a note lower.

My first time seeing one of your vids. You remind me a lot of Kat Dennings(but prettier)😍. This is a cover of the Tears For Fears song. The Gary Jules version is the best one.(IMO) It plays at the end of the movie "Donnie Darko" which is an excellent movie, BTW.

This has to be the lowest I've ever heard Mitch sing, and he nailed it. He has as wide a range as Scott, just a different range, The really cool thing about this song is the number of times they switch off on the same note.

yes i do! i didn’t talk about the lyrics in this video because i was more focused on the musicality and visuals. it’s a beautifully dark song and the words are very fitting for our global situation right now. as of mental health, which is also mentioned (“the dreams in which i’m dying are the best i’ve ever had”) i can definitely relate to as i struggle with depression myself. i think lyrically this is the darkest song PTX has done, and it’s special to hear these words from them. thanks for watching!
This is actually my least favorite of PTX's. Although it really has nothing to do with the quality of it. I just have a strong emotional connection to the Tears For Fears original, and done in the Gary Jules style, it just doesn't really hit that much for me.
But their vocal work is every bit as magical as ever, and the visuals of the video were stellar! 🥰
